The best camping near Fisherman's Island State Park guide

Overview

About

The island might be MIA, but Fisherman鈥檚 Island State Park is still a spectacular place for exploring more than six miles of the wild shores of Lake Michigan. Dip your toes in the chilly lake, or go for a swim if you're adventurous... this lake doesn鈥檛 warm up until August! While the summer crowds frolick in waters closer to the city, this place exudes peace and relaxation. Hunt for fossils in the shallow waters, hike the shore-side trail, and set up camp in a rustic campsite nestled in the forest or the dunes. You鈥檒l never want to leave this midwestern oasis.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Fisherman's Island State Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the park is fully accessible. Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, but be mindful of unpredictable weather. Winter visits can be challenging due to heavy snowfall, making some areas inaccessible.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry, as it's required for all visitors.
  • Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before your visit to plan appropriately.
  • Remember to pack out all trash and leave no trace to preserve the park's natural beauty.
  • For safety, always inform someone of your itinerary and expected return time.
  • Cell service may be limited, so download maps and important information beforehand.
