We have lived here since 2004, the blueberries have lived here for over 60 years. This site has more topography than most of the surrounding county. Learn more about this land: Several sites available on an organic blueberry farm near Oberlin College and Lake Erie. Blueberries are ripe in July. Site #2 is down by the Chance Creek, about 1/2 mile from the driveway. Very peaceful down there - a walk-in site. Site #1 is about 100 yards from the driveway, Site #1 also has access to a small shed. Both sites are woodsy and away from neighbors, roads and houses, however the interstate is not far. When the wind blows from the north you can barely hear it, but when a south wind blows and/or there is rain on the interstate, it can be pretty loud. We don't have a latrine. We have two "luggable-loo's" if you need them, have liners, too.

The space: Our campsites are situated on active organically farmed land. We have several sleeping spots available and amenities include an outhouse, an outdoor kitchen with sink & gas stove and seating area. Guests can freely use the basement shower which can be accessed through the red storm doors on the side of the house. Other things to note: Helpful to have a car even though campus is so close. 1/4 of the 25 minute walk to campus is along a state route. There is a beautiful longer walk to avoid the highway along a bike trail but if you have places to be, either ask us for a ride or best you have your own vehicle :) I walk all the time. Very doable just depends on your preference.

Jay is a very good host and was very flexible with us. The drive into the sites is interesting since you have to drive through his grass. If it is rainy I would recommend 4/all wheel drive. The area was great! Sites were secluded in a tree dense area and around 25 minuets away is the large town of Findlay. Plenty of hikes and parks around as well! Ultimately it was a great stay, and I would definitely come back!

A sweet little spot by the river. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed saying hi to the turtles and goats and cats near the office and kayak rental area when we checked in. The train is definitely right there and runs all night with horns, so be mindful of whether you’re someone who will be bothered or unable to sleep because of that. We stayed at site 1, which is right on the river’s edge and nice to wake up to herons and misty sunrises. Site 1 and 2 share an area without a barrier between them (though ample space for both). Site 3 is next to these sites, not immediately next to the water, but slightly more private. Site 4 is farther away from all three of the others and more secluded (and I think also right on its own little inlet of water, but I didn’t walk into the site to say for sure). We stayed here as a jumping off place for visiting Cedar Point, and would do so again.

Overview

About

There's only one place to view Lake Erie from the top of a 352-foot peace monument. You must travel to Put-In-Bay, Ohio, where you see a massive Doric column, reminiscent of ancient Greek architecture, that towers above the surrounding landscape.

The white column commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie, one of the most important battles of the War of 1812. A young naval officer by the name of Oliver Hazard Perry—just 27 at the time—commanded a fleet of nine American warships against the British. Despite losing his flagship at the beginning of the battle, Perry rallied his small fleet to victory.

By the end of the battle on Sept. 10, 1813, all six British commanders on their ships were killed or wounded. The battle secured critical shipping lanes of Lake Erie for America.

The peace monument, located 5 miles from the Canadian border, honors America's neighbors to the north. The column represents the lasting peace between Canada and the United States.

The view from the top of the memorial is awesome, to say the least. The stone edifice is 47 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. Luckily, there's an elevator that goes to the top. You only have to climb 37 steps, pay your admission fee (usually $5 and cash only), and then you get beautiful views of the surrounding water. On a clear day, you might see the skyline of Toledo, Ohio, to the west.

Summertime offers the best time to visit the crystal blue waters of the surrounding islands. The only way to reach this monument is by boat. A few outfitters on the island can take you on tours, fishing trips and water-filled adventures.

The visitor center is pretty small for a National Park site, so it doesn’t take much time. You can go to the top of the Memorial and have a great view from there. The Junior Ranger book was great and easy enough for my 5-year-old.
