Hocking Vacations Campsites

As many others indicated, the incline is not properly stated in the listing. It is extremely difficult to haul all of your gear to your site. That is not my biggest complaint about this site, though. The road noise was absolutely awful. We got no sleep the night we were there due to the road noise all night. We were there at the same time as 1 other camper and they had the same to say. Neither were able to sleep due to the extremely loud road noise- I’m talking very loud trucks and backfiring vehicles all night.

The parking lot was easy to find despite the roads in that area being very winding; the porta potty was clean and in good repair and the portable water was easy to use and very convenient! The campsite itself was well kept and the tent platform was great (I had never tent camped where one was provided before and it was nice). I will say though that the hill is very steep and the gravel is loose in some spots, so be prepared for that!

Climb a Mountain

Overall, the campsite itself was nice. However, the campsites were very close together, we actually had to walk past other people's site. You are also basically climbing the foot of a mountain to get to your site. No where is it mentioned that you need to be able bodied to get to these sites. Luckily we were a younger group or healthy travelers but for another group this could have been detrimental.

This site was well maintained and private! The platform for tents was very nice. The walk up is pretty steep but the metal cart is a huge help. Also did not have good service but is overall a great campsite.

Liked the site hated the hike

I have mixed feelings as many others do on this site, overall I liked the site itself and thought I had prepared for the hill. We were there to hike in Hocking Hills however hiking up to the site with our camping gear, even with the cart provided and our own wagon, was rough. Also hiking up and down to use the facilities was not convenient at all.

Nice space. The campsite was on an incline, with a rather challenging walk up a hill. Beware if you are bringing lots of gear, there is a cart to help but it still is a bit tricky. Very open cover, not a lot of shade. Would probably stay at the other sites farther away from the parking lot as they looked flatter. Available port o potty and nice to have a level wooden platform for tent.

The sites are very nice, secluded, have chairs, a campfire pit and a very sturdy platform for tents. However, the hill you climb up to get there is no joke. There is a wagon provided, but if another camper has taken it you are on your own. I'd stay here again if it weren't for that hill.

Camping Hocking Hills!

Great campsite, so close to Hocking Hills park and hikes. We did Ceder Fall and Old Man cave one day and the Ash Cave to Whispering the next. Was easy to get to, but fair warning ZERO reception. So make sure that you download an offline map to get directions. We ended up not coming in the evening but the next morning just due to not having to set up in the dark. This was such a good call since I don’t think we would have been able to find the place without directions. This was close to Walmart- so we could get gas/food/ice if need be. I will say- the walk up to the campsite was ROUGH. They did have a wagon (very nice) but even then it was a VERY long and at such a steep incline. We limited how much we actually brought up/the amount of times we had to go up to the site or back down to the car. This was also tough during the dark when you would need to go to bathroom or back to the car, given that part of it was gravel that moved and you were at such a steep incline going down. I wish they had steps and or maybe a pulley system to bring stuff to campsites (not sure how you would do that) but bringing firewood esp. was so HEAVY and so hard to get to the site. (mind you- we did select the farther site for more privacy and because I thought you would hear cars given that these sites were directly next to a main road )

The trail up is steep, but the attention into the campsites was exceptional. I appreciated the level sleeping platforms for our tent and also for the butane stove. Sites were clean and Hidden Hollow was very secluded from the other sites/ main trail. Very good place for those looking for a getaway:)

Beautiful, nice quiet, affordable, property. Near by all that Hocking Hills has to offer. There is a hike of around 100 yards, not bad. The only complaint for us was the uphill steep hike. Not easy to do with gravel. Everything else, WONDERFUL!

It was a great stay! We were happy to secure a spot for tent camping over Labor Day weekend and on such short notice too! It was very nice and peaceful. The only down side was the hike to the very top. 150 yard hike up hill, they call it sycamore ridge for a reason lol. Other then that an incredible place to stay and would recommend it to anyone in good shape and something simple and good value.

Black Oak Campsite

I had a terrible experience. I had no clue the hill would be as steep as it was. You get one little wagon that is the hardest thing to pull. You can not pull to the site and have to lug everything up hill. The platform was not big enough for our tent. The bathroom was at the very bottom of the hill. No electricity.

Was a good time! Nearby portapotty for those who may need it, and they had pottable water. I only a small walk up a hill to my site, so it was really easy to access. Recommend it for anyone who is looking to do some camping!

Had a nice time at sycamore campsite. There was a roped off area that indicated the property line, and a hunters nest across it. Wasn’t expecting that by the photos but the chairs and picnic table were super convenient and a nice accommodation. The porta-potty was VERY clean, and firewood is right next door, but you do have to walk down the mountain to get to them (and back up again) I say mountain bc it’s a VERY steep trail up to the sites it is definitely a work out… each time, I’m in shape but it was intense. Pretty and well maintained sites, quiet the first night, we had noisy neighbors the second night but we couldn’t see them bc it was secluded with trees. And while u can hear the road during the day/evening it’s pretty silent at night. SUPER close to hocking hills!

This is a site for simple packing, such as a light cooler and a bundle of wood and essentials unless you’re in shape. It’s definitely the perfect spot once you get up, but the reviews are correct, it’s a steep hill and would be really rough in the rain. The positives outweighed the negatives, however, and we only stayed one night for perspective. It rained nearly the entire time, and the wooden platform was a godsend. No one stayed while we did, but we felt it was super private and the site had just enough space for us. The site was super lush with ferns and greenery and it felt truly primitive. The water tap outside is a nice touch, and the bathroom was clean. Dumpster was conveniently placed. I might recommend preparing a meal in the parking lot as there’s a trash can and water to use without having to make a trip up. I would definitely recommend this for a solo adventure or a romantic primitive time. I’ll be honest in saying that a toilet up the hill would motivate me more to revisit, but I’m not the athletic type. Overall it was a great stay and we enjoyed ourselves despite the weather.

Steep Hill Warning

This campsite will best be suited only for people hauling backpacking camping gear. The hill mentioned in the description is HUGE and the gravel is very loose making it difficult on the way up and down especially when carrying gear. The wooden platform is barely big enough for a 4 person tent and the rest of the site was very uneven.

We’re experienced Hipcampers and have mixed feelings about this place. We stayed at the Cardinal Cove site and the listing says it’s 100 yards away from the parking lot, which is technically true, but we didn't know that those 100 yards were uphill at a nearly 45-degree angle. They do have a hand cart for hauling gear, but it’s very tippy and basically nonfunctional. The port-a-John is at the bottom of the hill. The Hipcamp is also just off a state highway, so there was a lot of road noise which covered up the birdsong frequently. The site was also not as private as we thought it would be.

My wife and I had a great time camping at the Sycamore Ridge campsite! The site was very private, well maintained, and very convenient with the added platform, picnic table, chairs, etc. I would definitely recommend this site to others!

Overall we had a good experience but the hike to the campsite is much steeper than I expected for being a “short walk”. It’s about 4 stories up on a steep incline that was slippery after it rained. A cart is provided to help cart stuff up to your campsite but it could only help so much. The campsite is set back slightly from a main road so you will hear road noise even with summer foliage. There is a portapotty and water tank available at the parking section. It’s close to spots in hocking hills and downtown Logan so it was convenient to get around I just wish the steepness of the walk had been properly conveyed.
