Best in Ohio: Finalist
Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2024.
Located only 8 miles from Hocking Hills State Park, Altenbrauch Farm features 62 acres of open fields, small streams and wooded hills intersected by a lonely country road.  Aside from our house, there are no neighbors in sight.  Easily pitch your tent in an open field or trek through the hills and hollows to find your perfect campsite. As part of Ohio's famous Hocking Hills Region, Vinton County is home to the second largest state forest, in addition to multiple state parks and wildlife areas. You’ll encounter abandoned historical sites and relics dating back to the early 1800s, hidden away among the wooded hills of Ohio’s least populated county. If you're a lover of outdoor recreation, this is the place to be. Within about a half-hour drive, there are many opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, hunting and fishing, and birding.  Nearby parks and forests include Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking Hills State Forest, Lake Hope State Park, Zaleski State Forest, the Moonville Rail Trail, Lake Alma State Park, Tar Hollow State Forest, and more! Set up camp wherever you like!  There are 12 acres of open field space, surrounded by 50 acres of wooded hills and hollows with hiking trails and level spots to pitch tents. Vehicles can be driven to the field sites; we are still working on a road to access the hill sites by vehicle.  The fields have about a dozen "permanent" sites with stone or metal fire rings and log seating.  Portable fire rings are also available that can be moved anywhere.  Dead wood for campfires is free to gather, or split firewood is available to purchase for $5/bundle. A toilet and solar shower are located at the center of the property. An outdoor water spigot is also available. Guests are expected to follow the "Leave No Trace" principles. Any trash packed onto the property must be bagged and taken with you.Located only 8 miles from Hocking Hills State Park, Altenbrauch Farm's 62-acre property features a mix of open fields, small streams, wooded hills and a lonely country road. Camping in the Hocking Hills
Excellent location, room to roam
We really enjoyed our stay here. It's the first site we've found in Ohio that has virtually zero light and noise pollution at night (even distant highway noise). We are in a drought right now so the creek was bone dry but I imagine it's a very nice addition to these sites when water is flowing. The water spigot was very helpful so we didn't have to conserve water, and it tasted great. There is also a portajohn to use if desired. The camp store is a nice touch and offers quite a few options for purchase, along with a couple of grates to put over the fire for cooking. The solar shower was also a convenient addition. My daughter used it and it stayed plenty warm for her 3-5 minute rinse off after we went hiking. The road (gravel) is fairly close/visible to the open field sites but we saw probably less than 10 cars our entire stay (3 days) and basically nothing during the night. Most came through during normal working commute hours. The field has plenty of flowers that attracted tons of butterflies, and there were also tons of dragonflies that helped keep the mosquitos to a minimum. We saw only a handful of biting/stinging insects (horse flies and wasps). We were 25 minutes to Hocking Hills trailheads and there is a small grocery/souvenir store on the way (Grandma Faye's) that had snacks and drinks. Our trip was delayed last minute and Caleb was very kind to let us delay our stay by one day. We would definitely stay here again!

Nice camp, bring your own firewood
We enjoyed our time camping here. We were there last on Labor Day weekend, a busy time for campgrounds but found plenty of space to ourselves here. There were other groups but the campsites are well spaced out. We had been hoping to camp in one of the sites in the woods on the hillside next to the field but found that those campsites are not really being maintained. We settled on a spot in the field which was still nice, but there were lots of bugs because of all the freshly mown grass. We bought firewood from the ‘camp store’ on property. While it was nice that this was offered the firewood was rotting junk that burned quickly. We’d recommend looking for firewood elsewhere. On the drive in to the site there are lots of people selling it along the roadside.

Wonderful place to tent camp. Sign in and get a map, lots of land and really nice sites to choose from. We loved the space between each site. Toilet was clean and so was the shower. It was quiet and beautiful. We will definitely be staying again!!

Great off leash campsite for dogs!
This is my 2x staying at Altenbrauch Farms this summer and i loved it. The creek is really nice but maybe more dried up during the hotter months. The shower is a great way to cool down after a hot day or long hike. Our dog had a great time as well swimming and being off leash. I did get posion oak from the property or fire wood so just be cautious of course.

Camping in nature
This will depend on how busy the farm is but I was able to camp away from others in nature. This is not something you can experience in state campground.

Camping in the Hocking Hills
Altenbrauch Farm was a great camping spot! All the campsites are spread out nicely and allow for privacy. I enjoyed the kiosk that had wood bundles, flashlights, trash bags, etc. If they had an upgraded communal bathroom/showers this place would be top tier for camping near hocking hills!
