When to Go
Guy W. Talbot State Park is open year round, and each season brings with it different perks. The water flow is at its most powerful in the springtime, but the chances of rain are high, while summer offers more pleasant weather but not as much water. Things pick up again in autumn, and while winter at the falls can be pretty, especially if it snows, the trails can get to icey for safe hiking.
Know Before You Go
- Be prepared for all kinds of weather. The climate in the Columbia River Gorge tends to be cool and rainy outside of the summer months, and strong winds are not uncommon. It’s a good idea to bring layers and rain protection, even on sunnier days.
- Pets are allowed at the park but must remain leashed at all times.
- The closest place to get gas and snacks is in Corbett, about a 10-minute drive away, where there’s a small country market. For a more extensive shop, head to Troutdale, a 20-minute drive toward Portland.
Guy W. Talbot State Park
Grab your picnic basket and your camera for an afternoon at this waterfall park.
At the base of the Latourell Falls trailhead sits Guy W. Talbot State Park, a compact day-use area generally used as a staging area for visiting Latourell Falls, a five-minute walk from the parking area. It’s also the starting point for the two-mile-long Latourell Falls Loop hike and a great spot for a picnic after a day exploring the many waterfalls along the Historic Columbia River Highway. If you have a larger group, you can book the on-site picnic shelter, which can accommodate up to 250 people.
