The best camping near Wilson State Park guide

Overview

About

You can never go wrong with the sandy beach + shady wooded area combination, and Wilson State Park is no exception. Summer months are a no-brainer: Cast a line or just sit on the shore watching mirrored clouds drift over clear, beautiful Budd Lake. Or hop on across to the Clare County Fairgrounds, where there’s always something going on: monster trucks, archery, you-name-it. Mini golf and arcade games are on the local menu, as are hunting and canoeing down the Muskegon River. Winter brings a whole new set of activity options, including snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. There’s even an annual golf tournament held out on the frozen lake! Whatever time of year you make a visit Wilson State park, it’s sure to be a memorable one.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Wilson State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warmth and a full bloom of park life, but also crowds. Winters can be harsh, so check for seasonal closures before planning your visit.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry; it's a must.
  • Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before your visit to stay safe.
  • Accessibility varies across the park, so plan according to your needs.
  • Remember to pack out what you pack in to keep the park pristine.
  • Look out for park events that might enhance your visit or affect accessibility.
