Weekend Trip to Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest

We really enjoyed the time here. The spot was level, well groomed, very clean outhouse, and a covered picnic table. The covered area was large enough that woe could have pitched our tent under it, and still had room for the table. The host was very friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. There is a snack shake at the main building to buy snacks, firewood, water, sweatshirts, and the like. We barely heard our "neighbors" at the other campsites, and only saw a few people. It felt like having the place to ourselves. We saw lots of eagles and hawks, and even had an owl land on my son's camera tripod when he was standing 3 feet away. That was a once in a lifetime experience. We would recommend this spot happily.

This is our fourth year camping at Rusty Ranch. Never disappoints. Margaret is a FANTASTIC host-lovely to be around and has new amazing add-on options each year. We will return!

3 nights at Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest

We had a wonderful experience at Rusty Ranch! This was my family's second trip here and this time we stayed at the Misty Meadows Group Site. The site was set up wonderfully for our group with lots of little kiddos. It was easy to see the kids playing from wherever we were at and the playground was so great for them. I appreciated that there were some games for adults in the game shed and the playground had some cars and trucks for the kids to drive in the dirt so we didn't have to pack those things. There is creek access from the group site but it is pretty steep to get down to with little ones. We tried to use the other access point by the other sites because it was easier for our little ones to get to but unfortunately we were told that we had to go way around because here was a group in those spots. That was a bummer for us but didn't ruin our trip. The trails were all clearly marked and the little store was nicely stocked with items that we may have forgotten or needed more of. The whole ranch is peaceful and quiet and the camp sites feel private. The staff was very friendly and checked in here and there to make sure we had what we needed. We will definitely be back in the future!

Weekend Trip to Solstice Campground

Kasia and her wife Kristy were so accommodating and helpful before and during our stay. The camp is situated next to a small working farm and there is produce for sale (the snap peas were so good!). We stayed in the Cedar Glen lot and woke up to a mom and baby deer, our view of the trees was unparalleled. We are planning to come back here.

Weekend Trip to Coyote Meadow Basecamp

Lovely, quiet beautiful meadow surrounded by trees. Great sleep. Nice camp hangout in evening and morning. Minutes from killer trails, town and everything. Caught 22 bird species in the morning. We stayed an extra night because it was so nice, and central to the good surf.

WOW!! What an amazing little jem! Leanne's property is simply amazing, everything is as listed, a beautiful little oasis away from the busy life. Quiet and peaceful setting next to old growth trees and wild raspberries. The site is immaculate, I can only imagine the work that went into the farm and seeing up the sites and driveway, right down to the hand made Muskoka chairs!! That's something for everyone here, a quiet site away from people right up to the petting zoo, pumpkin patch and lots of things to keep the kids interest. I will be back for a longer stay next time through. Amazing work, lots of sweat and tears went into this farm and I would highly recommend a stay here. Leanne and partner are amazing hosts, thank you so much for sharing your dream. Don't work about forgetting you alarm, the Roster will take care of that!!! LOL 🐓

We absolutely loved this place! We booked last minute and they were so accommodating! On top of that, their place is an absolute gem! So family friendly. She mentioned that there was a playground for kids, and I assumed it would be for smaller children, but they had tether ball, croquet, and horseshoes that my boys (15 and 18) and husband had a blast with. On top of that, we could have taken advantage of a few other perks, but with our late check in, it just didn’t make sense at the time. If we are ever back in Washington, we would definitely stay here again!! Such a wonderful place! No wonder they have won the title of best farm on hipcamp!

Our stay at Gary's farm was great. He is a good communicator and we loved the fresh eggs.

2 nights at Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest

Another amazing visit to Scott & Margaret's Alder Meadow. This is the 4th or 5th time we've been there. Every time is amazing. Margaret has done such a wonderful job with the property. My kids love that she has a snack shack where they can purchase an ice cream bar or popsicle. Probably the cleanest, nicest smelling outhouse I've ever used. We will be back in the future.

1 night at Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest

Margaret was so accommodating when I had to change plans several times due to a series of my own unfortunate events. What was supposed to be an overnight stay became a day trip, and Margaret was accommodating to my changes in plans. She was so quick about communicating and ensuring that I still had a great time. The site was amazing. It was clean, large, shaded and sunny, and had trail access to the creek. The entire camp is well maintained, and the outhouse was spectacularly clean. The trails had clear trail markers, and even though I explored them, I feel like I only scratched the surface. I was truly disappointed to leave. I will be back.

Weekend Trip to Rosario Camp & RV

Wonderful stay on Nichelle’s land! Camping here was peaceful and scenic—truly a special spot. Nichelle was incredibly attentive and accommodating throughout our stay, with great communication from start to finish. The views were beautiful, and we felt welcomed and well taken care of. Highly recommend if you're looking for a getaway with a responsive and thoughtful host! Thank you Nichelle!

3 nights at Rusty Ranch Tree Farm and Forest

We loved the site, land, and the welcoming nature of Margaret and Rusty Ranch. The grounds were very well maintained, grass even soft to walk barefoot all weekend. Excellent amenities at every turn. Playgrounds, swings, sand toys, activity book with forest information for the kids and trails for all ability levels. Wild berries by the creek were a very nice surprise and great incentive to keep the little ones exploring longer. This ranch would be great for several families to camp together but also the sites are spaced enough that you dont hear each other or feel on top of other guests. Core memories were certainly made this weekend.

The friendly hosts were helpful via instant message in advance of our visit and when we were on site. The port-o-potty was spotless, the campsites nicely tended to, and directions to and from were well marked. This was a nice place to spend an evening and it put us right onto the Hurricane Ridge road bright and early the next morning.

We arrived late in the evening and had to catch an early morning ferry, so staying at this campground was the perfect choice. We booked one of the car camping sites and slept inside our vehicle — super convenient and exactly what we needed for a quick overnight stay. The location is fantastic — just a 10-minute drive to the ferry terminal with no traffic at all. The area is beautiful and peaceful, and the grounds were well maintained and clean. We truly wished we had more time to enjoy the amenities! The host was incredibly kind and helpful — she sent us all the information we needed via message and made the whole experience smooth and welcoming. We’d love to come back and stay longer next time to fully enjoy everything the campground has to offer!

But don't forget to keep an eye out for the furry highland cattle across the street grazing along to the tune of the Red-winged Blackbirds of the marsh. (Currently we are improving our RV spot to be ready for use by August 1st, 2025. We do not have current photos of the functioning RV space at the moment. But for reference, the picture with our dog(Gizmo) in the grass patch is where the RV space will be located. There is a large gate being installed(currently not pictured) at the road with a large gravel pad for RV parking. Updated photos will be put up closer to the opening date for better clarity of the RV space and how to access it easily. Kragnes Family Farm Mt Baker Camp

Our 28 acres are located in between maple falls and glacier, Wa, directly on Mt Baker Hwy on the way to Beautiful Mt Baker. Ben and I run a chemical free farm, on which we raise 7 and 1/2 acres of veggie and flower. 15 acres of pastureland on which we raise pasture raised chicken, as well as biannual lamb and beef. The remainder of our land is breathtaking pacific northwest forest that is boarded by the Bay to Baker trail. Our campsites range between walk in wooded sites, and car camping sites that are open field sites next to the tree line. We provide wagons in our cart corral area to make it more convenient for the very short walk in. ( no more then a 200 foot walk in) We have a beautiful cedar grove to enjoy for lounging and picnics. The Bay to Baker trail borders our property, so it is just steps away and includes a 45 min round walk to a quaint little waterfall (maple falls). As well as a nature loop trail. You can also walk the other direction on the trail over a boardwalk and up to the Nooksack river. This direction walks along the back of the farm and allows you to see the veggie fields from a distance. There is a conservation area, just a quarter mile drive down the road. With access to the Nooksack river, that includes several nice swimming spots and a couple nice walking trials. Silver Lake is just 3.8 miles away. It has a great recreation area, fun for the whole family. Just a heads up , you will probably lose service on your drive up here. But you will get service back when you are here. We suggest putting the map in your phone before you leave. Google maps will take you just past the farm, and apple maps will stop you too soon. So you are looking for the large kragnes family farms sign in the driveway. pull in and follo the camping signs to the back.

The Glendale Farm

A lot of this property has been left natural for years and we are trying to keep it as natural as possible. We are just starting out so this place will get better and better as time goes on. We at The Rustic Retreat value your privacy and we try not to interact with campers unless you request. The Rustic Retreat is about 20 minutes from downtown Port Angeles and the Victoria Ferry and about 30 minutes from Lake Crescent. It is the perfect place to stay in between everything. Updates for this season: We have added, moved, and changed the name of some of the campsites, so if you are a returning camper double check the campsite number before booking. One change is, Former campsite 1 (the pond campsite) has been changed to a communal fire pit with log rounds for sitting. This is the only firepit that will be allowed on the premises due to fire danger. The firepit can be used by all campers until the Clallam County burn ban comes into affect. During the burn ban, the firepit will be closed off. We have also added more campsites, walking trails, more lighting and parking. We have not been able to get fish in the ponds yet, however some wild ducks stop by now and again to say hi. The hiking trail head is down the dirt road, west of the porta potty, it is roughly 316 yards to the trail head. Walking and biking is allowed. Trail is very natural so it is uneven, please be careful.

We also have the lovely Cowboy wall tent with electricity and extra plugs for charging devices, a small electric heater, larger dorm style refrigerator, Queen size bed and all the bedding, additional oversized twin bed with bedding, 2 lamps, love seat reclining sofa and side table, Bistro style table and two chairs, 2 burner hotplate with coffee and tea, plates, cups and silverware, We provide 5 gallon containers of natural snowfall derived city water at your site. ACTIVITIES Other activities include local trails for hiking and biking, close proximity to Port Townsend, town beach and waterfront and a short drive to the Olympic National forest. FOOD This year, due to positive feedback, we are increasing our offering of a full course Chuckwagon dinner, two person minimum, paid for when you book your campsite. You can select from smoked pulled pork, BBQ chicken, Smoked ribs or the vegetarian selection, baked spaghetti squash stuffed with a blend of marinara, roasted zucchini, yellow squash and bell peppers, topped with parmesan cheese. Sides served with the dinner include roasted corn on the cob ( in season), potato salad, homemade Horseshoe beans, corn bread and either blackberry cobbler or pineapple upside down cake. You provide the beverage. Guests meander over to the cook tent at about 6 pm and enjoy dinner seated around tables and chairs complete with plates, cups and silverware. Dinner is served by reservation only on Saturday nights. Dinner is $30.00 per person. 24 hour advance notice required so your food is always fresh. Breakfast ( described in intro above, is $15 per person) THE PROPERTY Just what is Cowboy Camp, you might ask. The traditional definition refers to sleeping outside under the stars with only a bedroll, a fire and the night sky for companions. But if you are a fan of the western genre and lifestyle, you might also know it as a place to go to hang out with like minded folks and experience the Cowboy lifestyle. This includes all people, men and women alike, as the term "Cowboy" is largely generic and not gender oriented. A taste of that lifestyle is what we are offering here at our Cowboy Camp. HORSES It wouldn't be Cowboy Camp without horses and they are definitely present. They can be heard whinnying at mealtimes and throughout the day as they keep in touch with each other. They are generally quiet at night. Horses are not allowed in camping areas when campers are present. No farm would be complete without chickens and ours is no exception. A few hens can generally be seen wandering around the barn searching for bugs, We do not have a rooster, so guests can sleep peacefully. We are offering camping sites ranging from simple tent sites with fire ring, picnic table and soft sandy tent sites to small cabin type tents with beds and electricity. As part of your cowboy camp experience you can sign up for a horsemanship lesson involving handling and grooming horses and time spent working with the horse in the round pen. (There is no actual riding such as a trail ride offered at this time, we are working on that). You can also sign up for a roping lesson. Learn to throw a loop and catch "Little blue", our roping dummy steer head. HIKES AND BIKES We also have games of horseshoes ( with real horseshoes) and corn hole boards. You can take a hike around the property on our trail through mature Douglas fir and majestic Western cedar forest. A 1/4 mile walk down our quiet country gravel road will take you to the 80 acre Jefferson County Land trust forest with several beautiful trails meandering through mature uncut forest. These trails are suitable for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. That forest further connects to the Cappy's trail system, a network of several miles of trails that will wind around and eventually lead into Port Townsend itself if you choose to venture into town. Or you can choose to travel via mountain bike or foot approximately one mile down the road to the DNR forest property that will lead you through more gorgeous wooded and open areas to access the Larry Scott trail, a 7.3 mile out and back firm surface multi-use trail that leads either out of town through the woods or to the north directly into Port Townsend along the scenic waterfront. Our beautiful piece of property is comprised of almost 11 acres situated on the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula just outside the quaint Victorian seaport town of Port Townsend. It lies approximately 4 miles from downtown with its many art galleries, restaurants, shops, boat harbor, farmer's market and the historic Rose theater. The farm itself is located within a section of old growth forest comprised of 100 year old Doug Firs, cedar trees and alder groves. There is an open pasture area in the center of the property, which is ringed completely by thick stands of forest, so it feels completely private. You have to look closely to see the neighboring two houses through the forest. The horses are excluded from camping areas during your visit, and will most likely be housed on neighboring property while guests are present. No need to worry about curious horses coming into your campsite to say hello. It is a wildlife paradise with frequent visits from local deer, bald eagles, ducks on the pond, owls nesting in the trees, and coyotes travelling through. The frog pond is alive all night with singing. If you are a light sleeper you might consider earplugs. We have created a walking trail through the forest around the land that is full of the sounds of life and birds. A pileated woodpecker makes its home in the back corner and two pairs of barred owls also inhabit the nearby Douglas firs. They can be heard at night calling out as they settle in for the evening. An important note for the walking explorer, please be aware that many areas of the farm are in their natural state. This means you might encounter prickly plants such as star thistle, nettles and tansy ragwort. We are happy to identify these for you if you are unfamiliar with them. Please be aware and dress in long pants and long sleeves while hiking. There are no poisonous snakes present in this region. We train horses here so there is a full size riding arena and training round pen. On any given day, you might see horses being trained and ridden. MORE ABOUT THE FOOD At the end of your day of adventures, you can opt to sign up ( when your site is booked) for a delicious feast at Cowboy Camp. Using old time traditional Dutch oven cooking techniques and slow smoking methods, meals are comprised of such items as slow cooked smoked pork shoulder or ribs, Dutch oven baked "Horseshoe Beans" ( a crowd favorite), fire roasted corn on the cob (in season) , homemade potato salad, green spinach salad, and of course dessert such as homemade blackberry cobbler or pineapple upside down cake. Vegetarian selections are also available upon request. ADVENTURES CLOSE BY Venturing out from the farm you can sign up to go on a whale watching excursion with Puget Sound Express out of Port Townsend. Seeing a whale is guaranteed or you get a free return trip. Also, the Olympic National Park is only a short one hour drive to the west and the view from Hurricane Ridge is not to be missed. Your Hosts: Property owners Karma and Rick come with a long extensive history of experience in the horse industry and western culture. Together they share over 100 years of experience with horses, both having ridden since young children. Karma loves sharing her knowledge of horses and horsemanship with others and has been a certified riding instructor for many years. Rick grew up with a horse and cattle background from a young age. As a young man he competed in the rodeo sports of bareback broncs, calf roping, bull riding and team roping. He then worked as a professional farrier, horse trainer and ranch employee in Texas. He learned the art of Texas BBQ cooking while living and working on Texas ranches. He loves to cook for others and enjoys sharing tales of the ranch life. You can choose to be as involved as you like during your visit. You can sit quietly in the forest and just enjoy peace and quiet if you so desire. We will not bother you. Our goal is simply to provide you with a beautiful place to relax, play, and enjoy during your visit. So come on out, set a spell, and enjoy a wonderful day, weekend, or week here at Cowboy Camp. We have added a group site with dispersed camping. WiFi, microwave, and mini fridge are available in our guest house along with 3/4 bath. There is also a portapotty available. This is our family retreat. Very calming and relaxing. Our season opens again 5/15/2025 and ends September 20th.

This is a dry camp. Distance from the campground: Olympic Discovery Trail - 1 Mile Elwha Interpretive Center - 2 miles Mouth of Elwha River - 2.5 Miles Salt Creek - 4 Miles Port Angeles - 7.5 Miles Lake Crescent - 15 Miles Also, you'll want to bring your own briquettes. We have BBQ pits for your use. Coming along hwy 112 from Port Angeles you'll cross the intersection of Dan Kelly/Place Road and the highway (don't turn here, stay on highway 112). If your navigation software tells you to turn on Dan Kelly, turn it off. We are NOT on Dan Kelly road. We are on hwy 112. We are the first left, just after the guardrails. Down the gravel road some 75 feet, turn right at the "Ranger Creek Campground" sign and follow the unimproved road about 100 feet to the campground. Camp sites include a raised 12' by 12' tent pad, picnic table, space for one or two vehicles that can be parked near the forest or in the field, and use of a porta-potty (cleaned regularly and pumped out weekly). Potable water is located from a spigot in the pasture. Choose from three camp sites: Eagle Eyrie, Owl Hollow, or Hawk Nest. Sites are roomy enough for RV campers and ideal for a private Pacific Northwest getaway. Our property is in close proximity to downtown Bellingham and downtown Ferndale (only 5 miles north or south) and all the delicious restaurants, live music, and parks they provide; but is nestled into a pastoral refuge. Seattle is 1.5 hours south and Vancouver is 1 hour north. Property owners, Kim & Jeff, live onsite if you have questions or need anything; however the camp sites are tucked away such that the camping area is entirely separate. Property is accessed down a long gravel driveway on the east side of Rural Avenue, just across the street from a log cabin/house. Overview

Sandwiched between the state of Washington and Vancouver Island in Canada in the Salish Sea, the San Juan Islands comprise four main islands and hundreds of smaller islands and rock formations. The San Juans are popular for getaways, particularly in the summer months, and offer all sorts of things to do, from biking and hiking trails to kayaking expeditions and whale-watching trips. The Washington State Ferry system offers service to the islands from Anacortes, Washington or from British Columbia. There’s also a passenger ferry—the Puget Sound Express—that links Friday Harbor on San Juan Island with the city of Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula.

Where to go

Orcas Island

Orcas Island is the biggest island in the San Juans, and has plenty of amenities, including restaurants, museums, shops, and camping options. It’s also home to the largest of Washington’s state parks—Moran State Park—a fantastic place for hiking, and boating. Tent and RV camping is available in the park, but campers need to secure reservations ahead of time. If you have your own boat, you can also visit nearby Sucia Island Marine State Park, an uninhabited, pristine spot directly north of Orcas Island.

San Juan Island

San Juan Island is popular among adventurers and history lovers, and the San Juan Island National Historical Park is a must-visit for anyone who wants to learn about the Pig War, a boundary dispute between Britain and the U.S. that all started because of a trespassing pig. The park is for day use only, but you'll find tent and RV sites at San Juan County Park on the west side of San Juan Island, overlooking Haro Straight, and at the San Juan County Fairgrounds.

Lopez Island

The third-most populated island in the chain, Lopez Island offers 63 miles of shoreline and a mix of forests, farmlands, galleries, and boutiques. The island is popular among cyclists, with quiet, mostly flat roads, and has a few great places to camp, including Spencer Spit State Park, which has reservable and hiker/biker sites, a dump station, flush toilets, but no hookups or showers, and Odlin County Park has seven RV sites for vehicles less than 30-feet-long, but no hookups.

Shaw Island

Shaw Island is the smallest of the four main San Juan Islands that are accessible by ferry, with a year-round population of only around 200 people. You can camp at Shaw County Park, which offers 11 tent camping sites, a boat launch, picnic tables, and fire pits. Island facilities are limited, but there is a general store by the ferry landing where you can buy food and supplies.
