Camping at Ross Lake gives new meaning to “getting off the grid”. Tucked deep in the North Cascades of Washington, this reservoir isn’t accessible by car (on the U.S. side, anyway). You can hike in —or, paddle from Diablo Lake up Riprap Creek and portage your boat overland to Ross Lake.

It takes some effort to get in, but the work is well worth the reward. Wake up to views of snow-capped summits at your lakeside campsite. Fish from the shore, or paddle out into the brilliant blue water.

Feel like a walk? The Pacific Northwest Trail and the East Bank Trail are right in your backyard. Hike along the 23-mile lake toward Canada. On the Sourdough Mountain Trail, you can climb high into the Cascades. From there, the views over North Cascades National Park are breathtaking.

There are 19 campgrounds on Ross Lake, each with 1-7 campsites. Whether you choose a boat-in or trail-accessible site, you’ll need to get a backcountry permit. At Ross Lake Resort, you can rent boats and book floating cabins.

Spring, summer, and fall are the best times for camping in the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. In the winter, heavy snow causes avalanches and road closures. Due to changing water levels, boating is possible from July through September.

We are right next to the Marblemount Boat Launch and within an easy walk into town if you want to visit the local restaurants or need camping gear. Our property has five tent campsites on the river as well as a 26' glamping dome (previously used for artic research) completely painted with a galaxy of the night sky. A converted antique hay trailer turned tiny house with an 8' ceiling loft with 3-way views of the forest and river, deck, and private "magic spot" on the Cascade River. The Lil Bit O Heaven Campground is the perfect base camp for your summer adventure! Firewood is available onsite most of the summer. Fresh, clean drinking water, permanent bathrooms and a private shower are available for all campers. An outdoor (completely private) shower is available for those who book the tiny house. Please note that you must follow any local fire bans. Please check the fire conditions PRIOR to making a campfire. We had an awesome stay at Zach’s! Epic location. No problems plugging in my Tesla for some car camping before hiking to see the larches on Heather Maple Pass! We walked to the tavern down the road for dinner and met a cool local girl and made friends with the bartender Lori! The shower was such a nice treat after a long hike. Bathrooms were clean and the area was quiet. Trash cans available on site. Would highly recommend this spot!

Pretty solid stay. We had a big huge grassy area all to ourselves for our dogs. The showers were OK. It could be a little cleaner and the water pressure could be a little better but they were fine. The location was close to Winthrop or easy access to restaurants and pubs.

Lovely site . Not necc private esp if the glamping dome occupied but it felt more like a community. River "access" (ie you could sit on a bench and gaze up in it) was either by the tent sites or there was one by the tiny house. The showers were wonderful and the toilets were flush and clean. Only issue is the parking location for the RV has no shade . On the warm days the RV cooked during the day. Thank God the nights/evenings were cool enough. The sewer connection will need a long hose and possibly some connector since it wasn't a sz that you could just leave your hose inside. We just used it to dump at the end and that worked. Highly recommend if you are looking for a quiet spot near the North Cascades NP

We camped for one night in a camper van in Zachary’s RV spot. Water and power hookups were easy to access. It is in close proximity to the dome home and the road (some road noise), easy access to the flush toilets (clean and appreciated) and shower. Gravel parking spot surrounded by grassy lawn. A picnic table, two chairs, and fire pit was provided and firewood available for purchase (although we didn’t have a fire with burn ban in effect). Garbage cans available on site. This spot doesn’t have a view of the river although you can hear it. You can see the river if you walk down to the tent sites but there isn’t easy river access. We had a nice walk down the road to the bridge over the river. There is a bridge construction staging area next door but it was quiet when we were there. Seemed like a well maintained place.

Excellent place to stay. We had a great time. Having showers and restrooms was great. Staff was super friendly. We recommend it. Only issue we noticed was on the dock, for some reason its separating in the middle and will pop up without warning was a little scary because we tripped on it while carrying a paddle board to the water.

Weekend Trip to Big Twin Lake Resort

We booked last minute to escape the western WA August rain (an atmospheric river? In August?? So strange). Luckily it was nice and sunny in Winthrop and we got a wonderful spot amongst the pine trees. Pine hollow in particular was a fantastic campsite, huge and pretty private. We didn't have any immediate neighbors, but even if we had, our site had surrounding bushes tall enough to hide our tent from view (at least when coming back from the bathroom). We had a lovely view of the surrounding hills and a bit of the lake, and it really wasn't too long of a walk. The stargazing was excellent! It's been a long time since I've seen the milky way, and when the moon eventually rose it was so bright I felt like I could have walked to the bathroom without a flashlight. Lovely experience all around, and we definitely want to come back and stay longer! Would have loved to make use of the boat and/or paddle board rental had we been there longer.
