Hi there. Here is a little rundown of everything we do at the mill….
So, as far as camping, there are two main options on either side of the river; the mill yard or primitive camping across the river. In the mill yard, we do festival style camping, meaning that there are no individual campsites per se, but rather a large grassy lawn near the mill and bathhouse with shared fire pits, picnic tables, charcoal grill, and sinks for water/dishes. We also have two platforms up in the woods that are good for a little more privacy and are completely shaded, but do require a small climb up the hill. The bathhouse has three restrooms and hot showers in each.
Across the river, there are several more primitive sites that are generally very private and offer great sounds coming from the river and waterfall, but no facilities. Most sites are car accessible, and a 5 minute walk back over to the mill (or a 1 minute drive). Lastly, our newest camping spot on the primitive side is a river front beach right by the dam with space for a several medium sized tents and a private fire pit. The beach is hike-in only (2-3 minutes along a mostly flat trail).
Our normal rate is $10 per person per night. Firewood is available for $10 per wheelbarrow load. We accept cash, credit card, Venmo, Paypal, and crypto. We are also fairly flexible on check in/check out times, but just let us know if you’ll be arriving at odd hours. Dogs are generally welcome as long as they are kept on leash.
Here is a little rundown of tubing at the mill (May-October, weather permitting). We have two tubing options available. We have a short Fun Run that takes roughly 45 minutes, and cost $10 per person for as many rides as you’d like. The river bends sharply like a horseshoe in this section, so it makes everything accessible by foot traffic. It’s a 3 minute walk up the trail to the dam, put in and float 30-45 minutes (depending on water level), then a 5-10 minute walk back to the mill carrying your tube. There is also the longer Forks Run, which last 3-4 hours (~2.5 river miles), and costs $15. For this, we shuttle you up the river in a vehicle, and you float back to the top of the dam, then 3 minutes walking back to the mill. Most weekends, tubing starts at 11 am and the last Forks Shuttle is around 3 pm, with the Fun Run staying open till around 5. Also, with enough heads up, we can sometimes arrange for trips during the week.
Our tubes are required for each person floating for insurance and liability reasons, but you are welcome to bring your own cooler tubes to carry drinks and snacks. Technically, alcohol is not permitted on the river, but what is in your cooler is your business. Either way, please bring ALL trash out with you! Water shoes are recommended, and we have life jackets on request. Most of our tubes come with bottoms and back rests, but a few are open to the water. Most weekends, reservations are not required, but it does help tremendously if we know when you want to come and how many in your group.

This property is located on the border of VA and NC, 6 miles from Kibler Valley on the Dan River with recreational releases for Class 2 white water kayaking in the summer. We are close to Class 1 kayak and canoe river runs as well in Danbury NC along with hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains, Hanging Rock State Park and Pilot Mountain State Park.

Located less than a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway, this little hayfield is nestled just a skip away from Mabry Mill (the most photographed spot on the parkway), Villa Appalachia (quant Italian style winery), Chateau Morrisette (larger tourist winery), Nancy's Fudge (a little candy factory and shop), and hiking trails of varying lengths with epic views (Black Ridge Trail and Rock Castle Gorge Trail).
Each of these is under 5 miles from our camp spot. Yet, if you are also hoping to hop out of your camper and WALK somewhere, there is a hike that leads you directly up to Chateau Morissette. Some of the property that this walk traverses does go through land that was logged. So, that section has lost a bit of its luster. That said, now you are able to look off in the distance to see the ridge that used to be hidden.
The property you will stay on is a hayfield that typically has a couple of cuttings each summer. There just happens to be a full hook up campsite located at the edge of the property that someone should be enjoying.
The property owner (my mom, who is in her mid 70s and doesn't internet so well) lives just down the road a smidge. She has graciously offered that we can rent this spot out and contribute the profits to her grandsons' college funds. While you may not see any of us at all, there is a chance you will meet some of the family (mom, myself, my husband or the boys), especially if you have any requests or hiccups.

Crooked Mountain is a family and Veteran-owned farm, campground, camp store, and small event venue located just ½ mile off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Mile Marker 159 near Floyd, Virginia.
We designed Crooked Mountain to be a unique basecamp for travelers exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially those traveling by van, car, motorcycle, bicycle, or with small RVs. With easy access from the Parkway and scenic mountain roads nearby, it’s a great stop for road trippers, vanlifers, and anyone on two wheels exploring Southwest Virginia.
The campground currently offers 15 campsites across the farm:
• 7 sites on Pine Creek (Sites 1 & 12 have electric)
• 5 field campsites with open views of the surrounding hills
• 3 field sites with electric near the pond (Sites 13–15)
Electric sites provide 30/20 amp power only. There are no water or sewer hookups at campsites.
Guests can enjoy the natural setting of the property and access our hiking trail, fishing pond (catch n release for a fee) and other amenities on the farm while staying here.
Our camp store offers tourism information about Floyd and the surrounding area (including local motorcycle/bicycle maps and routes, along with artisan goods, camping essentials (things you may have forgotten), snacks, drinks, coffee, ice, firewood and more.
During the summer months we also open our fields for a You-Pick flower experience, where guests can purchase a container and create their own bouquet. Flower season typically runs July through September.

We had such an amazing stay at Hippie Hollow. You can tell Sly has put a ton of heart and hard work into this place. It’s beautiful, peaceful, and really comfortable. The creek running through the property just adds to the whole experience.
The shared kitchen was great, and the people we met there were awesome. There’s a really good energy to the space. Sly was super helpful too, giving us recommendations for local restaurants and some incredible overlooks nearby.
His dog Danby was a sweetheart. Not quite sure how he felt about our dog, but she definitely loved him. She may have been a little much for him.🤣
The bathhouse is spacious and clean. There’s a smaller one available now, and the larger one still under construction already looks like it’s going to be beautiful.
Overall, just a great stay. Easy to find, welcoming, and a place we definitely plan to come back to and spend more time at.

John was a wonderful host. We got some eggs from his farm for breakfast, bright orange yolks, so delicious. We had a great view of Pilot Mountain and it was a perfect location for going to both Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain. We walked down to the creek where our dog met his dogs. His dogs were curious and our dog is pretty chill, they all got along just fine. Who won to check out the farm animals more but it rained, so we slept through the morning feeding. All in all, I would definitely go again.

Camping area is a very cute area, it's right off one of the main roads. They have a nice bathroom and shower available to use which is very handy when you're traveling for days at a time. There was a nice river and a nice little waterfall. It was a very scenic area. It is next to the main road so you may hear some traffic at night but it's not terrible. As a pair of women we felt very safe. We arrived a smidge late due to traffic, but Sly was more than understanding and very responsive. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a safe place to sleep and to shower!

The site accommodations are very well thought of— an outhouse, an outdoor shower, a picnic table, water for handwashing & drinking, etc. We especially loved the hammock & the free-roaming dog policy. The space was roomy and falling asleep to the sound of the creek right behind us was so dreamy. It was lovely to have access to a shower as well as a sink to wash our dishes! My sons and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kohler Farms campsite. Our hosts met us on arrival and shared a page and a half of great recommendations for food, groceries, entertainment, and recreation. Our hosts were extremely kind and I feel genuinely love having campers to visit their land. We loved meeting their four shire horses, who were very friendly and gentle. There was a lot of flat grassy space next to the creek to pitch our tent and put out our cornhole boards. We highly recommend Kohler Farms to anyone looking for a relaxing stay with plenty to do within a 20 minute drive.
