Just 40 minutes outside DC, Smallwood State Park is a 628 acre paradise with a marina, boat launching ramps, a picnic area, camping area, pavilions, a recycled tire playground and nature trails. We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed.
You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. There is a reservoir nearby as well.
We are in the midst of the suburbs not far from Fredericksburg, which has some great historic and community places of interest.
Our facilities are private and we only rent to one or 2 guests at a time. You can glamp in a trailer, or car camp in a nice campground with power and water or you can go primitive and pack in. All spaces include access to our classical 11 circuit labyrinth and backyard gardens where you can enjoy zen rock garden and other contemplative nature crafts. There are some great extra's here as well including an outdoor jacuzzi and indoor infrared sauna and massage chair. These spa features are another great way to get your zen on here. I offer Forest Bathing and individual retreat support sessions, an quarterly sweat lodge and also vision quest support if people would like to experience a solo nature immersion feast.

At the heart of the space, you’ll find a cozy fire pit perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. Nearby, a culinary herb garden invites you to touch, smell, and taste—whether you’re cooking over the fire or sipping tea in the morning light. A rustic picnic table and log splitter with mallet are available for your use, adding to the simple, grounded charm of the land.
Follow the trails to your own private creek—an ideal place for peaceful reflection, cooling off, or quiet moments of connection with nature.
This land is rich with life. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer moving through the trees, red-tailed hawks circling above, barn owls at dusk, and a lively chorus of birds, squirrels, and other woodland creatures. Hello! We are family farm mainly focused on Nigerian Dwarf and Mini-Nubian goats, Kunekune pigs, and silkie chickens! We also have a couple cows, peacocks, alpaca, ducks, quail, pigeons, sheep, mini equine, and rabbits. We can offer as much or as little farm experience as you’d like! Lend us a hand or book baby goat cuddling and sit in the pasture in a sea of friendly goats!! Baby goat cuddling and farm tours can be added on for an extra fee, check our extras! We usually get up early and do our farm chores, and depending on the time of year we could be bottle feeding baby goats or calves, delivering baby goats, or working on outdoor farm projects. Our home was built in 1864 and our barn is original! Our property is not far from Montpelier, the home of our 4th president, and about an hour from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. We love wine tasting in Charlottesville, and taking day trips to Shenandoah National Park. We are 45 minutes from Fredericksburg, 28 minutes from Culpeper, and 20 minutes from Lake Anna. Darlene was very nice and accommodating. We stayed in the forest gazebo for 2 nights. The property was beautiful. There was plenty of fire wood available and other camping supplies available that you could use. We throughly enjoyed our hike to the Rappahannock River from our camp site. We also got to spend some time at the spa and really enjoyed the massage chair. We definitely look forward to coming back and camping in the summer time.

We really liked this spot for a quick camping getaway from Richmond! We enjoyed the winery with a nice selection of beers on our first night and drove out the Shenandoah NP for a hike on day two. We felt like privacy was really good at this spot. (We didn’t realize campers were at another site until we were packing up.) The fire pit with built in grate and the picnic table made for a nice set up.

Trevor was such a cool guy! He came over after we got settled and made sure we were all set for our stay. The peace and serenity were such a treat for my boyfriend and I! The sauna and hot tub were an amazing way to wind down each day after our adventuring. The site felt very private and romantic with everything we needed! We were close enough to other towns to explore which was also super amazing! If you’re thinking about this retreat I 100% recommend! We can’t wait to come back soon! Thank you again!

We had an amazing time and absolutely loved camping here we have already planned to come back for Mother’s Day with our children. There is so much privacy, so much to explore, so many beautiful sightseeing things along each pathway while hiking. Beautiful creeks and a pond. You’re only about 15 minutes from town so if you need anything, you can run and grab it without it being a big hassle. We felt safe with leaving all our things at all times. John was an amazing host too! He showed us around the property , answered any questions we had, has a water source so we can get more water as needed. The winery close by was very affordable and fun with great staff. We were able to go on hikes several different trails. We brought our mountain bikes too and had a blast.
John even went out of his way to assist us when the rain was trying to get the best of us. And we were so very grateful not only was he a great host but a great person overall, you can absolutely tell. Can’t wait to go back.

This was my third time being back! Kevin is amazing :) Even with the weather, we had a great trip! We went around the farm and had fun interacting with the animals, kayaking on the lake, and exploring the trails on the site.

Tiffany’s Hipcamp site is a quiet little woodland retreat that feels surprisingly tucked away from everything. The site sits in a beautiful forested area with tall trees, plenty of open space, and a natural setting that makes it easy to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. The wooded paths and clearings create a relaxing atmosphere, and there’s plenty of room to set up and settle in comfortably.
The site itself has a really interesting character. There are thoughtful little touches scattered around the area that give it personality without taking away from the natural environment. The clearing makes it easy to park and set up camp, and there are spots perfect for relaxing, hanging a hammock, or just enjoying the quiet of the woods.
One of the highlights was the simple campfire setup. It was easy to get a fire going and spend the evening enjoying the peaceful surroundings. If you’re someone who appreciates a rustic, back-to-nature camping experience, this place definitely delivers.
Tiffany herself is a wonderful host. She is very responsive and personable, making communication easy from the start. She clearly cares about her guests having a good experience and is quick to answer questions or help with anything you might need.
Overall, this is a great spot for anyone looking for a peaceful woodland escape with a welcoming host. I’d absolutely stay here again. 🌲🔥
