Weekend Trip to Tenderfoot Learning Lab

Excellent campsite near Athens and Lake Hope State Park. It was great chatting with Travis and learning about what they did at Tenderfoot. There are two sites on the property and we stayed at the larger one, called Deciduous Downtime. It was a short downhill walk from the parking area to the site. The site itself is surrounded by the woods and very peaceful. You don’t really see the house at all from there. One thing to point out though is the ground is not completely level across the site. We didn’t find it to be a deal breaker though. We had enough room for two tents and a big shelter that we could put over the picnic table. Note there is just one tent pad. The outhouse is clean and well kept and there’s lots of trails on the property to explore. We'd highly recommend staying here!

Weekend Trip to Ohio Red Barn

We really enjoyed our weekend at Ohio Red Barn. Even though there was a bit more traffic on the road than we imagined, we still felt like we had privacy. We enjoyed the quiet nights and being so close to the Amish bakery and general store as well as Paint Creek. Great hiking nearby as well. We would definitely camp here again.

3 nights at Private Forest Campsite

The most perfect camping experience. Felt secluded and in the middle of a forest, without being completely disconnected. I had cell service the whole time and felt very safe, especially camping alone. Beth was an amazing host and was just a text away. If you’re feeling like camping on your own to escape real life for a little bit, this is where you want to go.

Aimee's sites were well maintained with easy access to firewood and restrooms. As an added bonus Aimee was very helpful with recommendations for local hikes.

Weekend Trip to Trothwood Forest

Really enjoyed tent camping here. The hiking trails around the property were well kept and easy to follow. Found a waterfall I had no idea was nearby. The campsite was easy to find and I enjoyed the walk to it, made it feel very isolated which is what I was hoping for. The host was super nice and offered to get me anything from the gas station in town if I forgot anything. Highly recommend!

Weekend Trip to Private Forest Campsite

Absolutely love this site! This site was super private with hiking around the property, great views, and even a compostable toilet! Beth set up a geocache shortly before our stay and it’s amazing. Bring goodies to trade out on your exploration! Could not hear the sheep dog per previous reviews, but Beth did leave earplugs just in case. Loved the private stream and seclusion of the site from the rest of the world. 10/10, will be coming back!

3 nights at Triple D Retreat

Frank was a great host. With all the rain we ended up stuck and he was gracious and came to our rescue. This, despite us ignoring his advice on where to park the camper due to the immense rain they've been having. This was our second time on his property and both have been excellent, quiet, secluded experiences. We'll be back again for sure.

2 nights at Fruitdale Farm

Our stay at Fruitdale farm was idyllic! Such a great getaway from life. Aimee had super clear instructions that made check in and departure a breeze. Walking around her land and exploring her recommended local trails felt like a sanctuary. The A-frame offered a wonderful in-between for people like me who aren't ready to fully commit to camping in a tent. I still got the outdoorsy experience of a latrine, no electricity, and no running water, but after a day of hiking, nothing felt better than to lay on the super comfortable bed. PS would highly recommend the Cedar Run Trailhead with the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. It was a relaxing hike, with so much beautiful moss, greenery, and a breath-taking waterfall.

Weekend Trip to Geode Nature Domes

The site was very well maintained and wonderful for feeling a part of nature while still having some shelter from the elements and creepy crawlies. The only negatives were the fact that the bathroom was down a bit of a steep hill that was completely dark after sunset so was hard to navigate down and when we did we found that the toilet was out of commission so we ended up having to leave pretty early the next day so we could find a working bathroom.

5 nights at Yourway Camp

Great hosts, awesome site with sounds of small stream and privacy yet close enough to hocking hills hiking for easy day hikes. Hot shower and ample firewood are extra bonuses! Would definitely stay again!

I love the Fern Cabin. It stays toasty on the cold nights. The sunset is over the farm is always gorgeous. The gazebo kitchen is the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor. And Aimee is an awesome host!

The property was easy to find and the instructions on where to enter and park were very clear. The property was also quite beautiful and peaceful. We quickly noticed how quiet it was once the birds went to bed. It was a clear night so we witnessed a beautiful sunset and great stars. Our site (site #1) had a fire ring and a picnic table. Overall, we were very happy with our host and our stay. We will book again if returning to the area.

Had a great weekend alone here. It was exactly what I needed. Very clean, unique, and well made!! Marci was very kind and I was lucky enough to meet her mother who has lived there 20+ years (I think!). Can’t wait to go back and may also hold a group retreat in her amazing meditative dome. The perfect 50 min escape if you are in Columbus.

My boyfriend and I absolutely loved this place.! Our campsite was perfect and very inclosed and private! Although it rained the owners had bridges and mulch to accommodate us durning the rain. We loved the trails they had on site, the beehives , pond and chicken coops even though there was none in there it was still a nice set up and the property was very well taken care of and set up.! The privy’s were very convenient and nice to have as I am 7months pregnant.!

This is a great site with plenty of room. The shelter was great. Perfect spot to watch the sunrise and the moon was fabulous. If you’re craving peace and quiet this is the place for you. There is a lot of history in the area and lots of roads to go overlanding and exploring.

Today the area is home to a decent size Old Order Amish community. You will see horses and buggies daily and there are several Amish businesses open to the public including a huge greenhouse, a hardware and bait & tackle store and a bulk food store to name a few. Our area is also a popular stop for hunters of all types since we are close to Wayne National Forest and Cooper Hollow Wildlife area. We need to mention that pets are welcome but need to be on leash or contained at all times due to horses and other animals that are nearby. There is also 4 dogs who live on the property and are always on patrol :) They keep the monsters away but are welcoming to our guests! We look forward to seeing you soon! Come stay at our little sustainable farmstead amid the beautiful rolling hills of southern Ohio! Our peaceful 20 acres has a good mix of woods, wild meadows and maintained cleared areas as well as a small pond, all of which can be explored via our nature trail. Enjoy the sounds of nature and an incredible night sky. Farm fresh eggs and fresh produce are available for purchase during the growing season and firewood is available all year round. There is also a wonderful sauna on the property that can be reserved. Great hiking, kayaking, biking, birding, fishing, swimming, and disc-golfing opportunities just a few miles away at Paint Creek State Park and the Highland Nature Sanctuary. Amish country is also just 15 minutes away with a great bakery, markets and greenhouses. This area is home to an impressive network of ancient earthworks including the world famous Serpent Mound. Our accommodations range from primitive tent-camping to "glamping" in one of our tiny off-grid cabins. The sites are spaced out for privacy and each site offers a private picnic table and fire pit. There are two shared privies/outhouses which have basic composting toilets. A grassy parking area is provided near the road, however, ALL SITES ARE WALK-IN ONLY. POINTS OF INTEREST in the area: The HIGHLANDS NATURE SANCTUARY (7 miles away), previously called "7 Caves" is highly recommended for some beautiful hiking. There is a small museum (The Appalachian Forest Museum) at the main trailhead by the parking area... the folks there can direct you to a couple of other great trails nearby if you're interested in further hiking. NOTE: Most of the trails within the sanctuary are not open to dogs, however, there are a couple of dog-friendly trails (inquire at the museum). Museum is closed for the winter (Nov-March). **Recommended trails: Valley of the Ancients (1/2mile, start at museum) and the Barrett's Rim Trail (2.5 mile loop) and the Kamelands Trail, which are both accessible during the pandemic. AMISH BAKERY (Country Crust Bakery) & MARKET (JRs General Store)* on 41 South in Bainbridge (15-20min away): The bakery is a great lunch stop for a fresh, soft Pretzel Bun sandwich (delicious) and to load up on fresh baked goods (the apple fritter is my fave!). The market, which is almost right across from the bakery, is also worth checking out... delicious deli sandwiches and great deals on spices, cheeses, pickles, jams, bulk foods, produce, etc. Watch out for horse & buggy traffic... and bicycles! *The Amish accept cash or check only and are closed on Sunday. In the teeny town of BAINBRIDGE (10-15min away): There are some nice antique/primitive shops around; in particular, Ancient Valley Mercantile has a nice selection of antiques as well as local art, gifts, gourmet coffees, local honey, etc. There's a wonderful little cafe (634 Coffee + Cafe, inside the historic Paxton Theater) that offers coffee drinks, pastries, soups and sandwiches. Stop into Pap's Hilltop Honey and Distillery, where you can purchase and sample a variety of moonshine flavors and cocktails. The Paxton Restaurant has good home cooked meals and a variety of pies and cheesecakes for dessert. Or grab an ice cream at the Dairy Queen before strolling the primitive shops. PAINT CREEK LAKE STATE PARK: (2 miles away) There are dog-friendly hiking trails (the harmony trail and little pond trail are personal favorites), mountain bike trails, a 21-hole disc golf course, boat ramp (if you have kayaks, you can paddle around on the lake... this spot is excellent at sunset), and a camp store that has ice and hand-dipped ice cream. There is also a BEACH, which is good for picnicking and swimming, located at the southern entrance, off of SR 50. GREENFIELD: This town is closer (5 miles) and larger than Bainbridge and good for getting supplies. There are some restaurants, bars and supermarkets (Community Markets, at the further end of town, is recommended over the Save-a-Lot), El Canon (Mexican) would be my restaurant of choice if you decide to eat out. Catch 22 Sports Bar has good burgers and there are plenty of pizza options for dine in or take-out. COVERED BRIDGE: There is a sweet little covered bridge that you can still drive across in the tiny town of South Salem, just a 5 minute drive away. To get there from here, take 41 North and then take a right onto Lower Twin Rd and drive a few miles and you will come to the bridge. SERPENT MOUND (about 30 miles away, Peebles, OH) is an internationally known National Historic Landmark built by the ancient American Indian cultures of Ohio. It is an effigy mound representing a snake with a curled tail. Nearby are three burial mounds—two created by the Adena culture (800 B.C.–A.D. 100), and one by the Fort Ancient culture (A.D. 1000–1650). A must see! CHILLICOTHE (Ohio's first capital): (30 minutes away) The historic downtown boasts charming architecture and is perfect for exploring on foot. Several local shops, restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and bars. A lovely city park with a small lake is host to a year-round population of ducks, geese and swans. There is also a disc golf course and skate park in the city park. There is frequent live music, gourmet cocktails and a wide variety of craft beer at Steiner's Speakeasy (an Americana-style bourbon bar of America). GREAT SEAL STATE PARK (about 35 miles away in Chillicothe): If you are into mountain biking, you will find some of the best trails in the state here (start at the Lick Run parking area). There is also a great disc golf course here along with a picnic shelter and a playground for the kids. FORT HILL EARTHWORKS & NATURE PRESERVE: (30 minutes away) This preserve encompasses 1300 acres of mature woodlands and 11 miles of some of the best hiking trails in the state. Part of the Old Growth Forest Network, there are remnants of the temperate deciduous forests that once covered all of the eastern United States. For archaeology enthusiasts, there is a stone and earthen wall hilltop enclosure, as well as a smaller circular earthwork (both of which can be difficult to discern).

Our little hobby farm was procured in December 2021. While we're just getting started our new home, we hope you'll enjoy sharing the orchard, meadows, forest, and swimming pond with us. "Roads go ever ever on, under cloud and under star. Yet feet that wandering have gone turn at last to home afar." Learn more about this land: Come relax atop the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio. Enveloped in the heart of Tranquility Wilderness Area, our 11 acres has a mix of native pawpaw, peach, pear, and persimmon trees, deciduous forest, cedar woods, wild meadows, a small swimming pond, and a large, accessible field for ample flat for tents and room to play. Trails through the woods are being worked on, and facilities expanded as the seasons pass. Mellow nature’s soundtrack of birds, crickets, and frogs and enjoy an incredibly clear view of the night sky. Hiking, kayaking, biking, birding, fishing, hunting, swimming, and more are available at several state parks and historical sites like within 10-30 minutes of the farm. Amish country is likewise near at hand with several bakeries, markets, furniture shops, and greenhouses. Our primitive sites are spaced for privacy, with a gravel parking area near the cottage and additional field parking is available near the road on the opposite site of the main house. While most sites are walk-in only, the upper field sites may be able to be parked near and the Lower Meadow, Boneyard, and Oak Grove may be able to be driven to, as weather and site conditions permit.

Enjoy our private paradise with over 800 feet of riverfront on 17 acres along the banks of the beautiful Ohio River. We have a great landing for fishing, swimming, or kayaking. This is a primitive camp with three sites available for you to consider. We are dog friendly and allow all supervised, friendly dogs to be off leash. Some things to know: We will provide a key code close to your arrival time so you can enter the gate by the road. If you are coming by river, we will put a flag on our landing. You can drive your vehicle right down to the sites. The farm is flat and easily navigated as long as it is dry. There will be a 5 gallon cooler of potable water for you to use. More water is available if we are at the property. We have 2 outhouses located on either end of the property. This is a primitive camp. Please pack out all your trash and leave no trace. 2 kayaks with paddles and life jackets are available for an additional fee, but we need ample notice. Firewood is plentiful by the river in the form of driftwood. We have some wood under a black tarp by the pavilion fire pit available for an additional fee. We have one neighbor who can make some noise with ORVs especially on weekends. There are plenty of majestic views of the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio. The property has a great mix of woods and open pasture. The primitive campsites are embedded within the woods for an authentic camping experience. There are 2 ponds on the property with the one being stocked with large mouth bass. As you hike the trails, look for the" BIG" oak tree, possibly one of the biggest and oldest trees in the county. You will also see plenty of wildlife, including deer and wild turkeys. The road leading to the property is an old dirt road with potholes...not for small cars. Although the property feels secluded, you are still only 5 minutes from the small town of McArthur. There are many gas stations, a grocery store, and even a McDonalds. Ash Cave and Old Mans Cave are just a short drive away(30-40 minutes). Lake Hope State Park and the intriguing Moonville Tunnel are just s short 20 minute drive away. The 2 campsites are primitive campsites only. There is cell service on the property but no wifi available.

Hope's Hippie Hideaway

10 acres altogether, about 5 acres mowed. Enough almost the size of a soccer field for kids to play in, in more than one place. Each campsite is about half an acre and we do have fire pits once you decide where you want to camp. We do not often have guests so you should have most of the property to yourself. The campsites are on the far shaded side of the property with my camper and cabin on the other five acres. Learn more about this land: Bookings available for 2023 season. Hope’s Hippie Hideaway at Wheelabout Creek is your new private LGBT friendly 10 acre camping site, less than 10 mi away from Lake Hope. If you could go through Zaleski, it would be 2 minutes. This is not a campground. Hike all day at Lake Hope, Zaleski, or Iron Furnace State Park, and cool off in the private creek that lines the entire property. Attention: The pool is closed for 2023. Lot's of area for exploring, creeking and to enjoy the wildlife. We have swimming holes, port-o-potty, 24-foot shelter house, over six half acre shaded non-hookup camping sites to choose from with private creek access. All campsites have a fire ring, access to charcoal grill, share access to water and electric, but not hookups. Sites #1 & #6 come with picnic tables. We also now have a trash container on site. There is currently one 40-ft gravel pad with pull through access next to temporary water in a full sun area. Dogs are normally on the property with huskies a qtr mile away. Dogs are welcome when leashed. And well-behaved. This is our own little happy place where we enjoy the view, the sounds of nature and togetherness with our friends and family. There is a shooting range near Lake Hope State Park, but shooting is not allowed on the property. The property is technically in McArthur, Ohio, but Google also considers it in Albany, Ohio. 10 miles from Lake Hope, 20 mi from Athens, 6 mi from McArthur Ohio where there are gas stations, fast food, pizza can be delivered, and three dollar general's within 15 minutes. Each campsite can have up to 6 people, any more and the site next door can also be booked. This listing is only for the 4 currently available non-hookup campsites or gravel pad. All amenities including water and electric are shared with owner and other guests. Daily electric hookup for gravel pad not available yet. Please bring some extra firewood as we go through quite a bit of it and firewood is not provided. We have room in the sun and shade for trucks, trailers, ATV's, we have walking trails mowed out, a driving trail around the property, and the pool can be reserved an hour ahead of time. Let us know what you want to bring and we will let you know what is planned that weekend and things to do in the area. Adults can float, kids can go play somewhere else. Bring your hammocks and tents. Can provide tent for extra fee. Wildlife preserve area in tall grass. Discounts for returning customers.
