This is a newer campground to Rock County near Luverne, MN. This property is known as the "boy scouts" by the locals.
When we were kids we spent time on this property riding bike, horses, and exploring.

This property has 4 camp spots. Sites 1 and 4 have a boat landing. All sites have shades trees that can hold hammocks. All sites are right next to the lake. Site 3 has a dock that all can use. There is excellent swimming with a sandy bottom at the south end of the lake. The lake is stocked with perch in 2024 but has others as well. It is also close to many lakes that are good for fishing. I have a 14' fishing boat with trolling motor, a paddle boat, 2 kayaks, and canoe for campers to use for free. Firewood is available for $5/day. There is some hiking on the property and much near by. Biking is also good with small lakes nearby to visit. The camping here is very peaceful with wonderful views and the wildlife is awesome! 120 volt power is at all sites and 220 can reach sites 2 and 3. There is warm showers and flushing toilets. Also all sites are drive through on hard ground grass. Grates are provided for cooking over the fire. There is Wi-Fi internet that reaches sites 1-3

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota.
Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to
the sixty-seven foot deep cave that
once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only.
Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond.
The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by
the Brew Master's wife.
We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive.
Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever
in the
Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders
were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They
clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals.
The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species.
Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and
started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving.
Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

We're also available for other events like birthday parties, intimate weddings, and group gatherings at our gazebo and/or 20ft x 40ft party tent.
Several lakes in the area provide numerous options for fishing, boating, and hiking. And nothing beats those evening country road walks while agate hunting!
Other area attractions include Mini golf in Cambridge, public aquatic center with water slides in Mora, and several state parks an hour or less away.

A beautiful and secluded place to stay! We watched and listened to the loons from the dock as often as possible, launched the kayaks from the dock a very short walk from the cabin. I definitely recommend having your morning coffee (or tea) on the edge of the dock while listening to all of the nature, absolute best way to start a morning in my opinion. The bugs weren't bad at all either until we got to the other side of the lake

Our stay at Paul's Lakeside Cottage exceeded every expectation! Paul is an incredible host and made us feel right at home. One of the highlights was a sunset cruise on the lake that we'll never forget.
The cottage was the perfect home base for exploring Itasca State Park and Bemidji, while still offering a peaceful place to relax. We saw so much wildlife—including a bear sitting on the beaver dam across the lake!
Our dog, Piper, absolutely loved her stay and had so much fun playing with Paul's sweet dog, Piper. She definitely wasn't ready to leave!
If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway with an amazing host, this is it. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and can't wait to come back!

My husband and I loved tent camping at camp site #1. The site is picturesque and well maintained. Leah is a wonderful host and was able to answer any questions we had. The add on amenities are great. We rented a couple of kayak’s which I highly recommend if you don’t have your own to bring. The disc golf course is well made and an absolutely beautiful walk through the woods.

We had a wonderful time! We brought our brand-new-to-us vintage camper to the hilltop campsite and stayed for two nights. Joel was so helpful with problem solving our electricity situation and Esther brought us fresh eggs in the morning! And when I tell you the joy we had just watching the chickens walk around…I mean, these were happy, well-loved chickens just being their chicken selves and it was awesome! Lovely walking paths, and even the well water straight from the pump was so cold in this hot weather, honestly we didn’t know what to expect doing this for the first time in a new place with a new camper but the whole property is just beautiful and set up well to not have to back in, and just nice to be there, and we felt very welcomed. We didn’t even get to try the outdoor shower yet or have a fire or see stars, we just were there to rest, so we will have to be back to do all that! Thank you for everything Esther and Joel, we do hope to come back again.

Me and the family stayed at campsite number two and we loved it. We stayed for the 4th of july so we didnt get a chance to try the disc golf course but it looks very intising if you like a challenge. The bugs were not an issue at all especially being in the middle of the woods. Over all it was a fantastic stay. Yes it is a little bit of a walk but that is what makes the experience even better. Leah and her family where there when we pulled up and they were doing landscaping and improving the overall look of the place. Leah greeted use with joy and excitment that we were there. We did not get a chance to use the shower or private bathroom, by the look of the building the bathrooms must be nice. The big sliver dome tents that leah has will definitely be the next thing we try on our next trip. Overall the experience was very heart-warming and easy to find. Definitely 11 out of 10 to recommend staying here.

Travis was very friendly, accommodating, and had a hands-off vibe. The site was lovely- private and had a small screened in gazebo.
There were a lot of mosquitoes and biting flies but it is July in Minnesota. Bring bug spray!

The site was perfect for a weekend getaway. Gary was a great host that met us with a jug of water and a quick tour of the place. Highlighting the chickens, goats, fishing and swimming. My daughter had fun petting the goats and fishing while my dog was especially fond of the water. The site was flat and perfect for our tent, a table and a few chairs just steps from the fire pit that is available. Good walking trails. Fun fishing on a small private lake. Would recommend for a weekend getaway from the cities.

The cabin was perfect for a quick get away from the cities. We loved the outdoor shower and easy access to the river for paddling or lunching. Everything was clean, easy to use, and as described. We’ve already booked a return trip!

I can't say enough good things about my stay here! The campsite is thoughtfully setup and well-maintained. Also, Emily & Ryan were great hosts. They even helped me get my car started after I discovered I'd drained my battery! Would recommend and hope to stay again.
