RV camping in California Wine Country

·

Many visitors think Wine Country is just Napa and Sonoma valleys, but the region stretches west to the Pacific and north to lesser-known wine regions in Mendocino and Lake counties, providing abundant outdoor opportunities. If you’re towing a boat or other watercraft, head to Lake Berryessa, Lake Sonoma, or Clear Lake for boating, water skiing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. If it’s off-road vehicles you’re hauling, it’s South Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area you want. Hikers and nature lovers will find trails in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, and Van Damme State Park, while wild coastal scenery can be explored at Mendocino Headlands State Park, Point Arena, and Salt Point State Park. For redwoods, visit Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. RV parks can be found around the lakes, along the Russian River, and in some state parks and coastal campgrounds. Hookups are not always available. Always check fire restrictions.

Finley Camp is nestled along Finley Creek in West Sonoma County. Campsites are located in open flats surrounded by Coast Doug Fir, Alder, and California Bay forests. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate, and access to a porta potty and hand washing station. The campsites are located past the end of the county road allowing for a quiet peaceful experience. Enjoy a quiet stroll on site, the surrounding communities of Bodega, Bodega Bay, Valley Ford, and Tomales, or just enjoy a quiet day in camp. Our sites are located approximately 20 minutes from Bodega Bay. The campsites are 2.5 miles from the coast and the weather can be unpredictable. As a general rule, it is very similar to that of San Francisco. All camp sites are situated in a valley that offers protection from the coastal winds. The have both morning and evening shade. Sites #2, #6, #7, and #11 have the most space, while sites #4, #7, #8, #9 and #11 offer the most privacy. Sites 1-3, any combination of 5-7, and 12-13 are well suited for groups. Other site groupings work well depending on the number of sites being reserved. Site #8 is unique in that it has a wood deck/platform for tents. There are also NO wood fires allowed at site #8 as it is under the tree canopy. A propane firepit is provided for your use. You can bring a 5 gallon propane tank from home, or a full one is available for rent on site. Well behaved dogs are welcome at Finley Camp. All dogs must be kept on leash at all times while on the property. There are no exceptions to this. Finley Camp is located on an active cattle ranch and directly adjacent to a neighboring ranch with cattle. Also be sure to check out our orchard tours! The apples are ripe now and our verities will continue to ripen thru late November. We'll take you to our family orchard where you can pick apples, pears, or blueberries in season and taste yummy treats out of our family garden.

Located right off coastal US highway 1, Timber Cove campground sits right at the edge of breathtaking, oceanside cliffs. We are situated on roughly two acres of land, with multiple campsites for tent/car camping or RV’s. Each bluff campsite has a picnic table, fire pit and water. Electricity is available to use for an extra fee. The beach and waterfall campsites do not have picnic tables so you might want to bring one if you’ve booked there. We have separate men’s and women’s flush bathrooms, with coin-operated hot showers. We have firewood with kindling for sale on site, payable with cash or Venmo. Please take note of local fire bans, when in effect. Dog friendly, though be advised a leash is recommended as we are close to the road, but they can run leash-free down at the beach. We are located 30 minutes north of the town of Jenner, with Gualala 30 minutes to the north. Gualala has grocery stores, a post office, and some shops. Fort Ross Store is located one mile down the road, just before Timber Cove, and sells basic food necessities, drinks, sandwiches, ice and gas. Internet cell service can be spotty in our area, depending on your provider, so bring your own Starlink services if you have them. We also have access to the beach below, and offer beach camping as well. Take note that the road down to the beach is steep with uneven terrain. The weather can vary quickly here, so be sure to bring multiple layers of clothing and camp gear for various types of weather, and headlamps are useful for getting around the property at night! We hope you’ll come visit our little slice of heaven on the ocean cliffs, gaze at the stars, marvel at the sunsets, watch the harbor seals dozing on their rocks and the many bird species that inhabit our property. Bring your binoculars and watch out for whales too! We look forward to hosting you at Timber Cove. Please email with any questions about camping with us. Address: 21350 CA-1, Jenner, CA 95450

Salmon Creek Ranch

Bodega Bay, CA · 8 sites · Tents, RVs, Lodging
Located within 45 minutes of the wine country and 2 miles from the coast, our property is 400 acres of rolling hills and redwood groves, with a creek running along its base. With miles of trails meandering through quiet woods and meadows, you will be able to revel in the tranquility of a private preserve, without sacrificing easy access to some of Sonoma County's most famous attractions. A hundred years ago, this land was used to graze sheep. Remnants of the old fence lines can still be seen in places, along with old cement troughs. Since then, the land has been left to its own devices, passing through many hands, most famously owned by two brothers in the 1980's who built a truly amazing tree house in the forest which has been featured in several magazine articles. It was revamped and updated in 2016 by a master craftsman, using fallen redwood logs found on the property and is now a unique structural work of art, available for overnight stays. We produce 100% grass fed, dry-aged beef on our certified organic pastures and have a store on site if you would like to purchase delicious steaks, ribs, ground beef for hamburgers or some roasts to take home. Our cattle graze on the native grasses, never grain, and drink only water produced from our own springs. We also raise Kiko meat goats and produce pastured, certified organic duck eggs on a commercial basis. Whether it's surfing at sandy beaches, award-winning clam chowder, a wine tour, horseback riding or a hot air balloon ride you're after, you won't have far to drive if you make our ranch your base camp. You may see a family of deer appear suddenly, or a few Scottish Highland cows which we allow to roam freely over the property. There are over twenty species of wild birds that grace this protected spot, so bring your binoculars! A portion of your fee goes towards protecting native flora and fauna as part of our private wildlife preservation program. A limited number of private, widely spaced camp spots are available for visitors. The Eagles' Nest Treehouse (mentioned above) is very isolated and you may or may not even be aware that there are other people within miles of you. For those who value nature, seclusion, quiet and the artistry of old growth redwood, this is the place for you.

This rugged stretch of California coast has sweet views and plenty to do. There are rocky promontories, coastal forests, and kelp-dotted beaches to explore. The dramatic cliffs here are sandstone that has been eroded and shaped by the sea. You might see cave-like features called tafoni. Tafoni is formed when the ocean deposits salt on the sandstone. The salt interacts with the sandstone, hardening parts of it and forming the signature honeycomb features. It also gives this park its name. All these features make Salt Point a great place for climbing. Where else can you lead an overhanging roof while looking out over the Pacific? Make sure you check the tide tables, some routes are underwater at low tide! There is also plenty of hiking in the area. Trails wind through Douglas Fir and Coastal Redwood forests before spitting you out on rocky beaches. If it’s been raining, hike the Bluff Trail to find a hidden waterfall that spills directly into the ocean. Camping can be had at the nearby Gerstle Cove and Woodside Campgrounds. Spots here fill up fast and need to be reserved ahead of time. If they are booked up, we’ve got you covered. Hit up Hipcamp for other accommodations.

A unique experience awaits you. Spend a night sleeping 20 feet up in the air suspended between towering Redwood trees. A custom woven "treenet" by West Marin artist Andrew Castle, provides a firm surface to hang out and sleep up to 5 people on. It's like floating in space. Bring your sleeping bag, this is open air camping at its best - No roof, no floor! Wake up to the sun filtering through your temple made of trees! Rain is nearly non-existent in the Summer and early Fall in beautiful San Geronimo Valley, making this the perfect place and time to sleep out in the glory of the redwoods. Swainson's Thrush will sing at dusk, followed by the owls and coyote's yipping and howling in the middle of the night (don't let it spook you!) There is amazing hiking all around, potable water on site and a public toilet not far away. There's parking for your camper directly next to the site, keeping your amenities close by. I'd say 4 adults maximum, maybe more if some of the campers are children.

The Meadow Grove is a wild and natural pasture with campsites located near the historic Narrow Gauge Railroad bed on a family owned working ranch in coastal Northern California. The camp sites are nestled in a pasture and grove of mixed Eucalyptus, willow and cypress trees. The sites are perfect for tents or camper vans, or small trailers. [When we open in the spring, the grass can be 'slippery' and it is recommended you have 4WD. Around mid-June it is dried out enough for 2WD access to all sites]. Not suitable for RVs It is also, managed and operated by a single mother. Please keep this in mind. Notes about the campsites are: They each come with a picnic table. The grounds are a working ranch, so there is variations of the soil- some lumps and bumps and general natural state of a pasture v. a groomed lawn. Site #1, #2, #3, and #4 have the most level areas for parking and tent-ing. Up until mid-June, we recommend #1 for 2WD access. Campervans that do not have 4WD may have trouble accessing other sites. Please remember this when you book! *Campers who "change sites" without written approval by the host will be charged double!* There is a composting camp toilet, we do not have running water at the campground. The ranch itself is 300 acres of rolling hills pasture, with hilltop views of the Estero Americano valley. The Meadow Grove is home to many varieties of raptors and other birds-providing excellent bird watching. Seasonally there are blackberries to fill your containers, and some hiking. We are mere minutes from the quaint towns of Valley Ford, Tomales, and Dillon Beach, and a short drive from Bodega, Bodega Bay or Marshall, Pt. Reyes Station and Inverness. Nearby attractions include: Sonoma Coast beaches, Pt. Reyes National Seashore, coastal hiking trails, local farm-to-table eateries. Inland attractions include: redwoods, wine tasting, Russian River activities and so much more. The ranch borders Hwy 1, so there is some degree of road noise. Traffic usually dies down mid afternoon, and isn't too much of a disturbance. Virtually all traffic on our stretch of road is daytime traffic. There can be however, some heavy weekend traffic during the day with car clubs and motorcycle riders enjoying the coastal highway. *The Friendly Gray Cat's name is Boots!*

Excellent Group Site! We only host one group at a time so you can be with your family and friends in a large, flat and private space. Choose between the campground, the cabin, or both! You can add the cabin to your campground stay under "extras'! The land was originally purchased in the 1980's. Since then, it has been used by four generations of the family as a place to gather, relax, camp and even celebrate. I had my wedding on the property in 2010. For a few years we held an annual music festival with the very inventive name of Samapalooza. Up to 400 people would attend the day filled with live music, food and drinks. You will still find the stage and bar we built as an outdoor kitchen and dining area. Around 2008, my father and I planted our first olive trees. Many have been planted since which has gifted the land the timeless sense of purpose it deserves. My father dedicated his last years to tending the young trees and now I have taken the mantle to carry the farm forward. 'The Property', as it is known amongst family and friends has always been a place to camp. I have sat around the same fire ring for decades, rain or shine. I hope that fellow hipcampers can find the joy that my family and I have experienced here. This is a very private camp on a small olive farm. Geographically close to highways and the town of Novato, Sonoma and Napa wine country, this camp feels remote and secluded. Only one camp on the property to keep it private and special. You basically have your run of the land. We have just updated the land and made some nice improvements. Located on ten acres, you will drive past a small olive grove before reaching the spacious and open campground. Just up the hill from the camp is a private pond where you can fish, take out a small boat or just sit and watch the birds. It can be great swimming on hot summer days. This spot has been used by the family for decades and is now open to share with fellow nature lovers. Just a note: While the majority of the time you can expect complete privacy, this is a working olive farm. From time to time you may run into me (Sam) or someone else associated with the land. We will always do our best to respect your space.

Welcome to our land in the beautiful wilderness of upper Calistoga. Our land is true wilderness, with some development of trails and amenities, at our Calistoga ranch just 10 minutes outside of town. The hilltop (where Coral Cabin is located) has electricity and wifi, and is a common area for all campers behind the shade screens. The main house is not part of hipcamp; tenants are a nice family but keep to themselves. Our ranch has been newly renamed after my new son Dylan, who will inherit this family land of 100+ years. Our hipcamp is our newest project over the last 3 years, creating the rustic campsites after we created the trails for our wedding in summer 2022. We are currently working on a fourth, pull-through RV site, so stay tuned. This hipcamp is a 'leave no trace, clean up after yourself' campground. We provide trash bags and ask that you take all trash and recycling to the bottom of the driveway, in the 'hipcamp' trash bin provided. There is no host on site, but I am very available by text, all times, and there is a caretaker on site for emergencies. Our rates are substantially lower to accommodate for this. If that is ok with you, read on! We currently have 3 campsites. Please see descriptions for each campsite access and services available. *The Hilltop/Coral Cabin has the most access and services. If you don't need the cabin (but have an RV or want to pitch your tent), let me know and I will discount your nightly rate by $30/night (and no cleaning fee at all), to enjoy close access to everything and the best views. You will see lots of wildlife! Beautiful birds song every morning, little lizards everywhere, turkeys, deer...(some non-edible, but) beautiful wild mushrooms at the right time of year! You can hike the extent of our 34 acres on fireroads that lead to the top of the Whaleback Ridge, seen in the distance from all camps. That would be an epic sunset hike! Please see Site descriptions for more details.

Huckleberry Haven currently features TWO sites: FIRST is the Camp Deck for your tents in the forest. Pitch your tent on a dry and flat redwood deck. Surrounded by huckleberries (in season July-Nov), fir, pine and redwood trees and adjacent to Salt Point State Park and Kruse Rhododendron State Preserve. Deck site has basic amenities: potable well water, fire ring (PROPANE only, bring your own fire ring, as we are now in fire season), picnic table, and an outhouse. SECOND is the small RV or teardop/Van camping parking spot. (no tents) This site is near the top of our grassy meadow, with glorious forest views, on dry gravel, and features a picnic table & outhouse. It does not have a campfire facility, nor water. You're welcome to bring your own propane fire & cooking source, but NO open wood fires due to grassy fire hazards. Property is situated at 800' above sea level (usually above the fog) across the road from the Stump Beach trailhead in Salt Point State Park - which, from our driveway, is a 2 mile hike or bike ride down to the beach. Enjoy quiet solitude of one of the most private and quiet places on the Sonoma Coast. Avoid the crowds of Salt Point, with all the basic amenities you expect. Birdwatch, play frisbee golf, hunt for mushrooms, basecamp your hikes, runs or mountain bike rides in Salt Point, or use Huckleberry Haven as the central spot to innumerable road bike rides on empty roads. The choice is yours! Special note: Huckleberry Haven is on the edge of some great wilderness! We have all sorts of wildlife sauntering by, and certainly have for decades. We recommend taking precautions to avoid interacting with curious/hungry wildlife - Don't sleep with your food in the tent, and keep camp tidy! We know there to be black bears, mountain lions, bobcats, foxes, racoons, skunks and so forth. Mountain Lions tend to avoid us, but you'll want to check on best practices to avoid bear interactions. Ettawa Springs Resort dates back to the 1920s like the fashionable resorts in the Cobb area where the rich and famous came to play. But Ettawa was oriented towards families and a more relaxed and rustic atmosphere. We are working hard to restore her to her former glory. We are excited to announce that we have one cabin and a few campsites ready for use and will be adding more as we go. The campground offers hot showers and flush toilets, two sites in the Glade have running water and power. The cabin is a fully equipped studio with kitchen and bathroom. You can hike through our property to the Boggs Mountain Demonstration Forest or just enjoy the clean air and listen to the wind and the birds. On clear nights the stars put on an amazing show. Clear Lake is about 45 minutes away with all the fishing and water sports you could ask for. Harbin Hot Springs are 15 minutes away and they offer day passes for reasonable rates. We are located about 20 minutes outside of Middletown. Be aware that half of the road is dirt (and that's better than the asphalt half) all of it is fine for small cars, just take your time. The last 1/2 mile or so is a one lane road, so please be careful of opposing traffic and uneven surfaces. We cannot accommodate vehicles longer than 28’ on these roads. Please do not take County Road 110 from Boggs/Cobb - it is not maintained at all. We offer California camping at its finest. Fresh air, whispering trees, amazing star fields . . . this can mean the less attractive side of nature as well. We have ticks, rattlesnakes, stinging things, poison oak, uneven trails and surfaces, and a bear on one ridge with mountain cats on the other (no sign of either in the campground). We keep the restroom stocked with Tecnu for the poison oak, but please watch yourselves and especially children. Dogs are welcome, but should be kept on lead and inside at night for their own protection and the comfort of others. We are fairly hands off in our hosting approach. Unless there's a question or problem, you likely won't see us. But we have people close by and are only a message away.
