We're thrilled to extend a warm welcome to our peaceful slice of secluded paradise, on the Dancing Phoenix Farm. **Before your arrival, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the rules outlined upon booking. YOU WILL GET LOST** To facilitate a smooth check-in process, we ask that you send us a text message an hour before your arrival, as cell phone reception is unreliable in our remote location. If you have any doubts or questions on how to get here, reach out to us BEFORE you head toward the site, and well before 7pm, as we will close all campsites at 7pm. Originally from the city, we now find ourselves fully immersed in life at The Farm, situated amidst gently rolling land in the Southwestern Grasslands of South Dakota. Your campsite is located about 15 minutes in from SD44, and approximately 45 minutes from Rapid City. You will be driving on a dirt/gravel road to get to us. You may want to put your vehicle in 4wd to get to your site, given the uneven terrain on the dirt road that takes you to your campground. The location is perfect for a quick overnighter, if you're visiting South Dakota's nearby nature sights and parks. Our family lives on the property, and we're happy to help answer any questions or concerns. This is a working farm, and you may see us on the pasture, upgrading and maintaining. We're glad to share with you and happy to have you "ghost us" as we work, if that's an interest of yours. Be sure to flag us down if you need anything. ABOUT OUR CAMPGROUND Pitch your tent, park your RV/camper, bus or other ride on our pasture and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the rolling hills of Hermosa, the Black Hills, Badlands and unobstructed sunrise and sunset views. Children and leashed pets are welcome, at no additional cost. To give you a glimpse into the experience that awaits, take a moment to watch a video review of our MORLA site by Precious Kofi, a former guest who visited during the Spring of 2023, when we resided and hosted in Colorado. Your site is equipped with a table for you to enjoy your meals outdoors, and a nearby water spigot is available for your convenience. Your campsite is located in the wild and rustic, sometimes windy, plains of South Dakota, and may not be for everyone. We can experience extreme weather in all seasons. When you stay with us, you will get the experience of camping in the middle of nowhere, South Dakota - wild, raw, sometimes windy and rugged. It's an amazing experience to be had - with stunning views and a feeling of freedom that's hard to find in more urbanized locations. While here, you may encounter badgers, coyotes, deer, pronghorn, wild turkeys, frogs/toads, turtles, voles, bull snakes, rattlers, owls, creepy-crawlers - and you may experience annoying mosquitos and flies during the hotter summer season. We have a friendly barn cat, HERO, that may visit you as well. Please don't feed the beasts or approach any wildlife! Would you like to sample our homemade booch (kombucha)? Just ask! As stewards of the land, we're delighted to share this natural sanctuary with you to enjoy. Stargazing on the site can't be beat, and you may even catch a UFO or alien... if you're aligned! We've had guests liken their experience here to visiting another planet. We attribute this to the unique ambiance of our home and location. Photo enthusiasts will enjoy some amazing and breathtaking photo-worthy scenery and views. Please come prepared with blankets and sleeping bags, as nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. Be prepared for travel and camping in sometimes extreme winter cold. Be sure to check out the local forecast before traveling. Of course, we will be happy to refund any weather-related cancellations. If you'd like to start your day with a complimentary cup of instant coffee or herbal tea delivered to your site between 5-7 am, simply let us know your preference the night before. We offer a brown-bag style breakfast/snack for $5, as well. Your choice of a couple farm-fresh hard-boiled eggs with Meusli, yogurt with Meusli - or an English muffin/butter, with mixed nuts. If you have Food Forest/Permaculture, farming, gardening or Back to Eden experience and are interested in contributing to our farm - we welcome your discussions and ideas, with short or long term arrangements. We're in the process of building a small country store on the property. Reach out If you'd like to purchase handcrafted items for yourself, or as gifts. We make shower steamers, homemade tinctures, balms, herbal oils and jewelry/gift items made from our kombucha scobies - along with organic items we make from items we collect around the farm. We also offer for purchase items such as 16 oz. propane, children's books written by Susi (featuring our adorable Bull Terrier, Makai), half dozen farm-fresh eggs (if the chicks are in the mood), MayaMoon Ceremonial Cacao, extra basic sleeping bag, and a Duraflame firelog. Hipcamp messages, email, and texts are the best way to reach us, as cellular reception is limited. Help us maintain the pristine beauty of our surroundings by tidying your campsite and removing all trash before departure. "Leave no Trace" campers, please. ABOUT THE AREA Local amenities, including mini grocery stores and gas stations, can be found in the town of Hermosa, located about 35 minutes away. For a wider range of options and services, Rapid City is located about 45 minutes from your campsite. We look forward to connecting!Your ARTAX site is located toward the front of the property on a flat, grassy space, and it's nearest the house and dirt road you drive on to get to your site. RV hookups consist of a long extension cord that goes to 220 power, along with a potable well water spigot steps away from your site. Let us know if you need the power cord. This is a perfect spot to enjoy sunrise and sunset views, as well as views of The Badlands and Black Hills. You have access to walk the entire outdoor land/trails, south of the home. Just remember to stay within any fences/gates we have up, as you may end up on our neighbor's property! This is a great, spacious place to pitch your tent or drive up in your RV/bus. We love the views of the Badlands, the Black Hills, sunrise and sunsets from this spot, especially the stunning sunsets. All guests will have access to a composting toilet, just a short walk away, against the shop, just north of your site. A stock tank, solar backpack style shower and water spigot are nearby, if you'd like to cool off. We ask guests to be self contained, take waste with them and leave no trace. Wonderfully remote, quiet place. Excellent for star gazing. The location is on a long dusty gravel road (15-20 min at least). Not too far from the Badlands. Susi is very accommodating with all kinds of personal touches. Excellent communication. Composting toilet was fine, water on site.

My friend and I stopped here for a night while visiting Badlands. The views were phenomenal from the campground and check in couldn’t have been smoother. The guests were lovely and even shared some cheese sticks with us! We went to bed with a beautiful sunset and awoke to a field full of prairie dogs. I will definitely stop in again if visiting the area in the future. The hosts are renovating so I can only imagine what improvements would be made to an awesome stay already.

Susi was a great host; she was very hospitable and sweet. I felt incredibly safe camping on her site and the sunset was beautiful. It’s very remote, safe, quiet, and the perfect spot for a little getaway. The wildlife at dusk was noticeable and the birds chirping as the sun set was just what I needed to hear. I would definitely recommend camping here!

Susi was very interactive and the communication was great. We were able to try out the fresh greens from her garden plus fresh eggs. Meeting all the animals were great but what was best part for us was learning about Susi and her husbands lifw story. Place was kept up amazing. What a place.

Wonderful night, wonderful hosts

The hosts went above and beyond to help us have a delightful stay!! When we arrived, the hosts had a welcome gift for us and invited us to pick our own salad, which was uniquely delicious! We were the only campers in the pasture, so they offered us to upgrade to MORLA, which had a hammock, cool stock tank for tired feet, picnic table, lovely composting outhouse, and solar powered lights. It was very thoughtfully arranged! We didn’t choose to stay in the A-frame, but we really appreciated the site. FALCOR would be more private but a bit rougher with less of interest for kids. This is a beautiful high plains pasture setting with rolling hills and mowed paths for walking. We enjoyed communing with the domestic animals from goats to Guinea fowl and saw some wildlife, also. The nitty gritty: Expect no cell coverage and pay close attention to the directions. I should have put my phone on airplane so it wouldn’t use up battery life searching for signal. High winds and sudden storms are not unusual out here, but things dry quickly. Bugs were after us during part of the evening, but they calmed down after dusk.

We had a great stay with Dan and Susi at Falcor! They had a kiddie pool filled and waiting for us when we got there for my kiddos. They also invited us to have dinner with them and showed us around their garden and we met the animals. We also got to meet their sweet pups and we purchased a book about Makai that Susi is the author of. We really enjoyed their kombucha and had fresh eggs for breakfast. They provided 6 gallons of potable water in a jug and we had a toilet available on the site. Falcor does not have a formal picnic table but did have pallets to prepare food on. Also, remember to bring wood when there isn’t a fire ban. We were woken up several times by thunder but that’s the season and being in the plains and cell reception is very very spotty but it’s nice to disconnect. We would definitely stay here time and time again. Susi and Dan are great hosts and we really enjoyed our stay!

Best Host Ever!!!

Absolutely loved this camping spot! Susi went above and beyond multiple times on our one night stay. We arrived amidst a pretty bad storm and she camp out in the rain to meet us and guide us to our spot. We were supposed to be in our tent but the winds were so bad that she moved us into her A-frame structure, which saved us from a rough night of lightning, hail, and storm winds. The campsites were all very well taken care of, and the lean-to structures are a unique touch that make cooking a lot easier in bad weather. I would absolutely recommend this stay to anyone. Despite the weather we had a wonderful time.

Lovely peaceful escape

Susi's camp was a much needed get away after being stir crazy thus late winter. The cabin was cozy and had all me and my 2 dogs needed for a night's escape. Views were gorgeous and hospitality was lovely. Guest tip: try the booth! So good. Thank you Susi 💛

If you are looking for wide-open, 360-degree prairie views and big skies, this is the place to be! I had missed the note about arriving before 4 pm, so my reservation got cancelled unexpectedly while I was on my way, which was a bit of a shock. After contacting Susi directly, she was very accommodating and let me stay anyway. Thank you!! This is definitely something to be aware of and to keep in mind when making a reservation, out of respect for the host. The campsite was peaceful and super quiet, and in the morning, I got a tour of the vegetable garden and the animals. Susi and Dan, thank you for a wonderful stay!

I had a great stay. I like how friendly the hosts were and that they showed us their lovely animals. The campsite was set up nicely and there were a lot of stars at night. It was also fun to walk around the property and see all of the other campsites as they were all unique.
