This cabin was built by hand in the 1970s from white pine that was harvested and milled on-site. Our family purchased and rehabbed this beautiful cabin throughout 2021. Deer, foxes, coyotes, turkeys, owls, eagles and more are likely to be seen or heard. Explore, Banning, Moose Lake, and Father Hennepin State Parks which are all within 30 minutes, and return to the cabin to read, play games, listen to records, have a fire, and relax. The kitchen provides you with everything you need to prepare your meals including a refrigerator, small freezer, stove, oven, cookware, cutting boards, sink, seasonings, oil, and coffee. Water for washing is available from an electric pump faucet in the kitchen, and a brand-new outhouse is located steps from the cabin. The cabin is efficiently heated and cooled with a user-friendly heat pump and gets the cabin to your desired temperature very quickly. We are grateful to honor the Dakota and Anishinaabe people whose land we occupy by donating $10 from every booking to the Makoce Ikikcupi Land Recovery Project. Short drive from the Namekagon River which is great for tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. Due to a recent review, I am also adding here that swimming from our property is not ideal. The lake tends to be weedy during warm summers. There are places to swim nearby, so if you are booking with the sole intent of being able to swim, please be aware that this is likely not the best site for you unless you are willing to drive to a nearby beach.

(The tent site is very private and a camper would not fit.) We are a short 10 min drive to Stillwater but there is so much to do in Somerset! Take a walk around the prairie preserve and kayak down the apple river, but don’t forget the local brewery and boutique shop. There is some great fishing on local lakes in the area as well. Crooked Creek was a perfect oasis away from the city. We really enjoyed the cozy vibes of the cabin, and the walking paths for us to enjoy. We were even provided orange beanies for hunting season, which we greatly appreciated as we went on our hikes! I have stayed at Jubilee Homestead a handful of times over 3 years. It’s a beautiful slice of land to bring my friends and my granddaughters to. The animals, the beautiful barn and owners are all great. Esther answers messages within minutes and is so helpful always. She and her husband have written many books and we bought one on this visit. I’ll be coming back here a few times every year. It’s wonderful to bring my city granddaughters out so they can experience this beautiful country life! Picking apples from trees, touching goats and chickens and just playing at the playground, it’s a sweet slice of country life.

Esther’s property was so beautiful and relaxing! I loved all the chickens, goats and seeing the neighbors’ cows and horses. Also, one of the barn cats literally climbed up in my lap and cuddled into my neck!! So sweet! The little path around their property is cute and the outhouse was so clean and roomy. The cookies at arrival were delicious and I purchased a book (excited to read) and crochet pig from their little store. It was a quick stay but peaceful and relaxing. I would recommend!

Where do I even start? Maybe at the fact that we absolutely cannot wait to return?! We had so much fun at “the dome”. The autumn trees worked out perfectly for us – the trees were in full color and the weather mostly cooperated while we were there. The second night we were able to see the stars and MY GOODNESS, it was absolutely spectacular. It was expected to be pretty chilly during the night, so I brought a 10x20ft tarp to lay on the ground and help insulate against it and I think that helped significantly during our second night when the temp was about 36*. We cooked over the fire mostly for meals, but also drove the few minutes to A&W for root beer floats daily. The compostable toilet is located behind a small partition to provide a bit of privacy, but there is also a gas station within three minutes of the site so I just drove to use that one mostly. The solar powered fan circulated the air a bit, but there’s only so much you can move the air around in a dome shaped space… it was 70* on our second day and it got warm inside of the dome pretty quickly. We were able to buy firewood at the Adventure Church lot (five minutes away) and paid $5/bundle in cash at a self-serve stand. This stand is covered, so it had dry wood even after it rained the first night. We loved how secluded it felt without also feeling like we were in the middle of nowhere. Overall, as the first camp like experience for us, it was a roaring success! Highly highly recommend, 10/10.

I loved camping in Dan's yurt campsite! The walk from the car is perfect, just long enough to feel like you are really out there camping! The views walking to the bathroom in the fall were just gorgeous! Speaking of the bathroom don't be scared off by the composting toilet. Dan provides plenty of woodchips/sawdust to cover everything up and there is no odor! The bbq grill and bonfire ring are great to have options. The picnic table seats plenty of people. It rained a bit while we were there and everything in the tent stayed dry thanks to the extra plastic Dan has placed over the top of the yurt. Dan is so kind and generous and feels like going over to a friend's house to camp. Can't wait to return next year!

Such a great retreat from the city! I used the provided kayak for a sunset paddle and the firewood was at site as well. Gorgeous sunset and even better sunrise! Quiet, private, and the view was stunning. I took a bunch of photos to make oil paintings. Bob Ross! Haha The host was so great helping me back out on my tear drop’s maiden voyage. Nice guy! Thanks Adam! Only an hour from TC and plenty of places to stock up for needs along the way. Loved it.

Very last minute, I realized I needed to go camping: my stay in Site 1, Birch, was just what I was seeking for some nature nurturing. The site was private as promised (in fact I had whole campground to myself) and beautifully tucked in the woods. The yurt tent is well designed (side pockets, table in middle around center pole, also with pockets for stashing gear). Outhouse was a bit of a hike, though even the walk was pleasant, and so clean: the automatic light inside (and solar lights outside) was unexpected nice touch! I enjoyed the barred owl, sand hill cranes at night; great blue heron on one of our hikes on the property. I didn't think about it being duck hunting season, so the early morning and late evening distant gun sounds were scary for my dog, and the 2nd night fox barking was quite startling! But a good reminder we're in the woods! Maryam was helpful with answering questions during booking.

Welcome to Oak Lake Campground, a unique family-run destination in East Central Minnesota, where generations of the Hoffman family have dedicated themselves to creating a serene and enjoyable outdoor experience. Nestled in northern Pine County, our campground offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and modern amenities, making it an ideal getaway for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Founded in the 1920s as the “Oak Lake Resort,” the campground has evolved under the stewardship of Henry and Norma Hoffman, who took over the family business in 1969. With a commitment to excellence, Henry transformed the campground into a thriving destination, now boasting approximately 207 sites, most of which feature full hookups and are rented seasonally. We also have several prime sites available for daily guests right by the water’s edge, including tent camping options. Oak Lake is renowned for its excellent fishing opportunities, with species such as Walleye, Crappie, Sunfish, Northern Pike, and Bass. Our park features seven large docks for daily use, where guests can fish responsibly. Seasonal guests can also enjoy private docking options. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, and firewood is conveniently available at our Campground Store, which also offers bait, tackle, light groceries, clothing, and RV parts.

The best camping in Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway, WI guide

About

The water is cold. You won't mind because you're having too much fun riding the rapids along the St. Croix or Namekagon Rivers. This 212-mile stretch of water forms part of the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. If you love the outdoors, consider taking a week or two during the summer to float this scenic and wild area.

Thickly forested land on both sides of the St. Croix provides the perfect out-of-the-way spot for a vacation. Campsites along the route make it easy to pull your boat out of the water and take a break for the night. Many campsites are only accessible from the water.

After getting your rustic campsite in order, cook up some of the fish you caught as you paddled down the river. The upper St. Croix harbors plentiful smallmouth bass, walleye, sauger, and muskie. Try to catch a big one fishing for giant catfish or sturgeon. No matter what you catch, you'll eat well that night.

If you need a break from paddling, the National Park Service maintains seven trails of varying lengths and difficulty. Interstate State Park starts in Minnesota and ends in Wisconsin. This green space also includes a portion of the 1,000-mile Ice Age Trail. Any of these hiking paths offer stunning views of the river below.

Plenty of rustic towns dot the landscape in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These towns offer quaint main streets, historic sites that showcase the area's former lumber mills and steamboats. There's plenty of good eats once you get off the water.
