The best camping near Twin Lakes State Park guide

Overview

About

The only thing better than one is two. Meet Twin Lakes State Park. Nestled in Michigan’s Copper Country on the southwest shore of Lake Roland, is the best spot to make basecamp. This area is awesome for historic trips with the family. Travel a little north of the park and watch the mining buzz and boom of the mid 1800’s become re-enacted. Hike your tush up the Porcupine Mountains and scope killer views. Or, go visit the mineralogical museums that surround the area. Or, park yourself in front of the water and don’t move a single inch. Roll out a towel and soak up the sun on the beach. The Twin Lakes Nature Trail is accessible from the park and only stretches a mile and a half. Cruise the off-road-vehicle (ORV, we like acronyms) through the dirt trails in the hot months and whip out your snowmobile in the snowy season. For overnight adventures, reserve the lodge for a cozy stay or set up camp on a modern site. There are also mini-cabins available. We call them fun size. You’ll call this place heaven, twice.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Twin Lakes State Park is during the spring and fall months when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer brings warmth perfect for water activities, though it can be crowded. Winters are less ideal due to colder temperatures and limited access to some park areas.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you have a Recreation Passport for park entry, as it's required for access.
  • Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before your visit to pack appropriately.
  • Be mindful of park rules to preserve the natural habitat and wildlife.
  • Remember to carry out all trash and keep the park clean for everyone's enjoyment.
  • Accessibility may vary across different areas of the park, so plan accordingly if you have specific needs.
