The highest peak in Greenbrier State Forest, Kate’s Mountain, is named for a woman who took her kid up to the mountaintop in 1756 for protection during a battle, so you can scale this 3280-foot high peak in honor of one hardcore lady! Killer views abound, overlooking the surrounding countryside of southern West Virginia. See if you can spot the heated pool, shooting range, archery field range, or frisbees flying through the air on the disc golf course. There are cabins and campsites for you to reserve, trails to hike or bike, and great bass fishing in the Greenbrier River. Also in the vicinity of Greenbrier is the town of White Sulphur Springs, home to the birthplace of American golf. This resort is well-known as a luxury hotel, but was revealed in the 1990s to be a former Cold War bunker! Set up as an emergency relocation center to house all members of Congress in the event of a nuclear attack, it’s now open for history buffs and the curious to snoop around.
