Best Dark Sky Hipcamp in the US 2025 Best in West Virginia 2025 Welcome to Starry Night New River Gorge of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Starry Nights NRG is 88 acres of mountain top land in the heart of Southern WV with easy access to a lake, rivers, State Parks, and NRG National Park. Enjoy long range views to the East and West of the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains. See the sun rise and fall beyond the distant blue ridge lines as you await vast night skies free of light pollution. Watch the smoke rise from the forests creating clouds after a foggy morning or rain. Discover cliffs, caves, springs and more as you adventure the land. Hike the terrain with the East and West side of the property providing different experiences. All wildlife is in abundance and bird watchers rejoice, the forests and fields are alive. Enjoy the peace, still and quiet that comes with seclusion deep in the mountains. There are currently three camping sites available. Each one comes with a picnic table, fire ring, trash can and an outhouse. Cell phone and satellite service is excellent on the property. Field of Dreams is a campsite perfectly placed in the corner of a six-acre field in the center of the property. Flanked by hardwood forests, this site offers privacy while still remaining open to the field and the sky above. With the largest unobstructed sky Field of Dreams has unmatched star gazing, cloud watching and all-around blue-sky fun! Flat or gently slopped areas make for leisurely walks filled with long range views. Bathe in the morning sun as it peaks over the crest of the property lighting up Field of Dreams. Spend your day relaxing in the blue sky as giant clouds float by to pass the time. Then walk across the field to enjoy the magic of a sunset disappearing behind the mountains. The campsite comes with a picnic table, fire pit, 55-gallon trash can and an outhouse.

4WD/AWD Required Secret Spot is a secluded and private two acre campsite located on the far Western side of the property. The entrance is marked by two red wagon wheels and on the other side you will find an open area with level ground and ample room for parking, tents and recreation. Enjoy the quiet and secrecy of a private field surrounded by tall mature hardwood trees. Secret Spot has shade to keep cool, open sky for sunning and star gazing, and a private Southwestern view across the mountains. The site is equipped with a picnic table, fire pit, 55 gallon trash can and an outhouse.

Nestled in a flat triangular area surrounded by tall hardwood trees, Hidden Valley offers 6 acres of fields to enjoy as your personal camping space. Due to the shape and size of the hill that it lays below, this area feels like a natural amphitheater and is oriented towards the Milky Way. Enjoy the star filled night sky without having to lay down or look up as you enjoy the warmth of your campfire. Climb to the top of the hill to enjoy an awesome valley view across the mountains to the far wall of Bluestone Lake. A Campsite Worth the Drive

The camp site was in a clearing along woodline in a secluded location. Very accommodating and scenic. I noticed each campsite was similarly situated affording privacy and good separation from the others. It was also extremely clean. The leaves had been blown clear of the path to the outhouse, which was well stocked with tp. The view of the nightsky was as advertised. I highly recommend this campsite for it's ease of access, beautiful location, and seclusion.

The land was beautiful and the lots of privacy. Directions were clear and house is not visible from site. I appreciated the grate in fire pit making it easier to manage the fire. There are 2 other sites on the property but never heard or saw anybody. Makes a great home base for nearby adventures.

SECRET SPOT: Such a beautiful property. It was so serene and peaceful — spent a heavenly fall morning on the site as the sun rose! Watched a buck enjoy his breakfast. Easy directions in and out.

I loved camping here. No light pollution so you can see the stars really well. So much space between camp sites so you don’t feel crowded in or like you have to be super quiet late at night. Had an outhouse, picnic table, and fire ring on site and tons of room for us to set up and spread out. Beautiful scenery and you were allowed to use downed branches as firewood!

Stayed at the "Secret Spot" site, had a great time! It was indeed very private. We could not see or hear the other campers at their spots. Host was helpful and communicative. I particularly appreciated that the outhouse was clean and well maintained.

Field of dreams was great spot if you are looking to avoid the crowds of campgrounds in the area. There were two other camping spots that were occupied but they are very far away. You can’t see the other spots. They all looked good. Property is well maintained. It is as advertised.

The campsite was perfect! We were lucky to be there on a clear night and the stars were amazing. We had our own personal outhouse that was clean, a picnic table, and a fire ring. I would definitely return.

What an amazing spot! I was on a solo motorcycle trip and stayed here in October as the leaves were starting to change. This spot was perfect. I enjoyed complete silence and seclusion. As mentioned, four wheel/AWD is needed. I was on an adventure motorcyle meant to tackle all terrain. I could see cars/sedans getting stuck on the saddle up and out of Secret Spot. I will be back with my family in the Spring.

The Secret Spot at Starry Nights New River Gorge exceeded all of our expectations! The location of the spot is beautiful & completely private. Brian was a fantastic host. He answered all of questions happily & was an excellent source of knowledge regarding the area. We loved this spot so much that we booked it again for another 6 nights! Thanks so much, Brian and we can’t wait to visit again!

Brian's property is beautiful. It's nicely maintained, and we had tons of space to roam around and enjoy. An added bonus: there were some really cute cows in the field next to us. We had a change in plans and didn't stay as long as we initially planned to, but we would absolutely come back. Really nice place to unwind and enjoy the nature around you!

This was my first Hipcamp experience but I fear I might’ve gotten spoiled at this site for future bookings at other sites! We stayed with our 2 dogs in our 15 foot square drop camper. We had the entire place to ourselves most of the time and our pups loved all the room to run around! We were so close to many state parks, and of course the national park. 100%, I would stay here again!

September Weekend at Starry Nights

I had an amazing weekend at Starry Nights. Brian (and of course his dog Maple) could not have been better hosts. Brian was very responsive and went above and beyond. Getting to the campsite was easy and exactly as described. Breakfast in town at Lucky Rivers Cafe was incredible and I had a blast exploring New River Gorge. I will definitely return in the future.

A beautiful spot in a beautiful area. Everything was just as billed - we had a ton of space for the kids and dogs to run around and incredible views of the night sky. Brian was very friendly and responsive and gave us great tips on local spots for swimming and paddleboarding. Highly recommended!!

My first Hipcamp experience and absolutely loved it. Big private lot in nice secluded dome. All the features (restroom/firepit) made camping super easy. I did have trouble returning up the hill, I drive a ford escape with a sport mode - I would defiantly advise a vehicle with 4wd/awd as mentioned in the profile. Perfect place if you’re a larger group

Brian’s property is absolutely stunning! A big meadow surrounded by forest a wide open sky! We set up a tarp over the picnic table (which Brian provides) and the 2 chairs we brought…perfect…didn’t even set up the tent. We wrapped up in blankets and slept in our gravity chairs under the open sky! We got some amazing pics and the best sleep of my life! There’s also lots to see and do nearby. Great hiking and beautiful waterfalls, cool towns to explore. We will definitely be back! Thanks so much, Brian!

We had a great stay at Starry Nights! Our dog (and kids) loved the field to run and play. The nights were amazing with staring at the stars and seeing multiple shooting stars. The location is perfect, close to many great outdoor spots.

A weekend in the woods

The secret spot was the perfect location for an intimate and relaxing weekend for me, my husband and our girls (dogs Ash and Rona). The most beautiful landscape and very spacious. Fire pit, picnic table, and toilet were provided and all that was needed. We packed our tent and other essentials. We were greeted upon arrival and the host provided great written instructions but also helped us navigate once we got to the house. Very quiet and within day driving distance to New River Gorge National Park.
