Mid October Update; Full moon weekend ahead!!!! And Autumn colors are nearing their peak!! So far, it looks like perfect Autumn camping weather ahead for this weekend the 23rd-27th. The river levels are dropping again, and fishing should be easier again by the weekend as the riverbank becomes exposed. A few details about our sites in the general camping area: Sites 1, 3, 8,9,10,11 have 13x20 shade sails, 2,4,5,6,7 have 10x13 shade sails that are also weatherproof. For larger groups, I recommend any of the sites with the larger shade sails as they have a bit more space than the others. Enjoy the nearly direct access to the CO Canal Historic Park and the kid friendly, serene stretch of the Potomac River we border. Choose from 11 similar sites available for your camping pleasure in our clover filled bottomland as well as our Hilltop sites for maximum privacy, exclusivity and star gazing potential. The surrounding old growth forest makes for a great hiking and biking as well as a very accessible and kid friendly cave to explore. All sites now have either 10x13 or 13x20 shade sails available to keep the afternoon sun at bay: recommended. We have two kayaks on site free of charge. We have some life vests, but if you have your own, bring those along. The river's main beach located between sites 7 and 8, is shaded/filtered sun all day long while our smaller beach at site 1 is sunny most of the day and affords some of the nicest river lounging via a rock ledge that spans 4wd or All Wheel Drive are recommended. If it's been relatively dry, single wheel cars are 100% fine. We have ways to mitigate most weather events. Please pre-order firewood and/or shade sails via a message to me when booking your stay and save the 18% "booking fee" or add them via the "extras" section for your site so I can have it waiting for you. $40 buys you a long night's ++ burn worth of well-seasoned hardwood. Property was owned by my great grandfather , He lost 150 acres in the early 1900's due to a bad debt from neighboring landowner. Was so happy to be able to repurchase the 150 acres back in 2016,now own the original land tract and added more. 250 acres in total. Portions were strip mined around 1978-1982 creating some flat fields and access to all property. I might add that strip mining if done properly can and does enhance the property. Ponds were built to catch runoff and several new animal species moved in waterfowl ,muskrats, and beavers. The beavers have constructed large dams on property further adding to the beauty. Have seen several bald eagles on and around the property.

The Hill House sits atop 15 acres in an intimate setting with beautiful views of rolling hills and mountains. It features a full-glass garage door, allowing you to fully enjoy the landscape during your stay. Visit the site ranked by Hipcampers as one of the top three sites in West Virginia. Pitch your tent on a wooded mountain knoll overlooking the Cacapon River surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains as far as you can see. The Cacapon River is a hidden scenic gem and the cleanest river in West Virginia. This is rugged West Virginia at its best. Wildlife abounds and it is common to see Bald Eagles, Black Bears, and Whitetail Deer. If relaxing on the ridge line and enjoying the views are not enough, hike down to the river via the powerline cut or trails and swim, paddle, or fish (WV license required...one day passes are available online). You can also hike the creek running through the deep hollow, which follows the state access road while enjoying dark Hemlock woods and shale cliffs. If you like to mountain bike, you will find the mountain access roads and trails offer you some back country riding fun. The campsite has nice level areas for pitching a tent and an established fire ring and picnic table. Trails allow one to hike in or drive (a four wheel drive is necessary to access the ridge line campsite). The campsite is very private, but it's possible you will see a friendly neighbor pass by on the trail or see folks staying at the cabin in the valley along the river flats if you go down to the river or you can get a bird's eye view of cabins in the valley across the river from the top. The campsite is no trace so you must bag out all garbage and waste. Cat holes and such are not permitted so campers must bring and use a camp toilet. During exceptionally dry periods, open fire restrictions may be put in effect. You will need a four wheel drive vehicle to access the site. If not, or in inclement weather (snow or heavy rains), you can hike in from the state road where the access road begins. Learn more about this land: The property's history dates back to pre-European settlement and was originally inhabited by Native Americans with archaeological evidence dating back at least 10,000 years. After European settlement, numerous of battles were fought in the area during the French and Indian War, American Revolution, and it was even a cross-roads for armies during the Civil War. Farming, sustenance farming, and logging were the primary industries throughout the region. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, the river, limestone, charcoal, and iron ore from the area fueled a local iron bloomery, which the area, "Bloomery," is still named. The land you are camping on was nearly completely logged over the last hundred years, but a few old growth trees can still be found throughout the mixed hardwoods forest. On the way to the campsite you will also pass the old original school house (now a hunting cabin) located on a neighbor's adjoining property. There are still a few old timers left that attended the one room schoolhouse as children, but the building predates them by many years. There is also an old Methodist Cemetery located on the property (not near the campsite) that dates back to the 1700s. If you happen to find this site, please do not disturb it.

No RVs, campers, travel trailers, fifth wheels, or motorhomes due to the steep driveway and limited turning space. The gravel driveway is steep in places but is accessible to most passenger vehicles, SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans. Full-size dually trucks can access the property. All vehicles must be parked in the designated gravel parking area on the property. Parking along the roadway or at the top of the hill is not permitted. The kayaking was extremely fun, 2 kayaks provided my the campground. Some rapids; intermediate level. The host will work out a ride if you need it. This is an excellent location immediately next to the C&O Canal, with the towpath available for strolling or biking. The sunrise view from Hilltop 1 is indescribable. You are looking out across several valleys with blue mountains making up the horizon. We had 2 campers and a dog, and he had plenty of space to run in the fields around the campsites. Camp was spotlessly clean, and the hosts checked all sites twice daily. They provided an area for both trash and recycling, and outhouses were regularly serviced as well as stocked with paper and hand sanitizer. I recommend earplugs if you are a sensitive sleeper because there are train whistles at night. They only woke one of us up, so it wasn’t too bad. This was my 6th Hipcamp booking, and we hope to return!

We stayed at site 5. It was a great first experience with our 3 kids (age: 6,4,2). Site 5 has a little cut though path to the trail and the river, but there is also very easy access on either side of the end sites (1 and/or 11). Greg and his daughter Elise were so sweet, responsive, and very kind hosts. Our kids had an amazing experience playing in the river, walking along the trail, and visiting the cave. What a wonderful property and we will definitely be back for another stay. Great for families and large groups.

The spot was beautiful, very private and has a beautiful view! You WILL need a four wheel drive vehicle to get to it, especially if it rains! The link to get the directions to the spot, never got through to my email, i tried to message and call the host with no response the whole stay, we were able to find it by using the coordinates provided through the app description. The only other thing would have been the amount of fire wood that was given, we stay 3 nights, and i paid $10 for 7 pieces of firewood, we ended up buying some from someone’s setup on the side of the road. All in all, it was a beautiful trip, and a great spot, with a view. Would definitely book again now that I know how to get there!

My husband and I loved this site. It was pretty private, had plenty of room for our rather larger tent and gear, and the view was gorgeous. Gregg was a great host and made sure we had everything we needed at the site. We were only a short walk from the C&O Canal trail and we enjoyed walking the trail. We also found a cool cave off the trail that was pretty neat! Couldn’t have asked for a better trip!

Super helpful and accommodating. The owner and caretaker were super nice and talked back and forth with us. You could tell they actually cared about the campers and their experience. The river was rising and took time out of the day to move our tent when we weren't there and gave us a cabin for the night. 10/10 experience and we would definitely be open to coming back. We had a super nice private area as well.
