These beautiful pollinators have been on Earth about 175 million years from what we can gather from fossils. Beyond the splendor that would be lost from the world if monarch butterflies went extinct, there would be ripple effects in the environment.  Monarchs share their habitat with many other species of insects and birds. The birds would lose a food source, and their decline is the proverbial “canary in the coal mine” for other pollinators. If other pollinators decline like monarchs, it could have impacts on the food that humans rely on. I highly recommend Big Oak Farm Dog and Horse Camping! It’s an idyllic little spot to stay with the family, with pets or solo. It’s easy to locate and very accessible near a state road. I booked last minute, (I’m talking about an hour beforehand). The host responded quickly and was very welcoming. Every time I reached out through the app, during my stay, the response was quick. The hosts were attentive, but definitely gave you your privacy. Although, their very clear directions and instructions were posted on the site, they took the time to greet me personally and helped me get set up with water and electricity, using their own hose and extension cord to save me the trouble of dragging out my own. There is a large fenced in area for the dogs to run around safely. My 3 had a great time and were fascinated by the pig and the emu in the adjoining field. It’s a beautiful sight to see horses in the field while having your morning coffee! I decided to book a second night after seeing the stars the first night. There is no noticeable light pollution and little to no traffic at night. I would recommend bringing a telescope, you won’t be disappointed. I would definitely stay again!

For my cycling, the south spot gives me a good central spot to go for long ride via the Withlacoochee trail near by and many dedicated bike lanes. It is a good central location with stores and all sorts of other activities in the many cities around. The owner, George, is very responsive to any issues that can arise. I loved tent camping on Arcadios land! The stars were in clear view which was so beautiful and he was so accommodating! It was so peaceful out there and waking up to the rooster crows was so nice! We got to watch hocus pocus on the projector screen while laying out on a blanket by the fire and that alone was such an experience I’ll never forget! Sandy Stars 2 was a hit once again. We saw tons of shooting stars the first night and loved movie night on the projector screen. We spent our days exploring the coast at Crystal River and paddling down Rainbow River. Both are an easy 15-20 minute drive from the campground. The animals were fun to interact with, neighboring campers were friendly, and host was upbeat and accommodating. Wilbur the pig is a great ambassador to the campground and honestly I would come back just to spend time with him. Overall 10/10 experience, this place is on my all time favorites for Florida camp sites. Thanks again to Arcadio and his family for another wonderful weekend!

We hope that you too can enjoy the peaceful serenity we find when we come to this enchanted oak paradise. Learn more about this land: Spend a night, the weekend, or stay even longer under our spectacular centuries old live oak canopy in a quiet countryside neighborhood. The weatherman might say it’s 95° out but under these trees you’d never know. 3 acres of cleared flat live oak forest will invite you to kick back, relax, and let your cares drift away. Plenty of room to drive in, around, then pick your favorite vantage point. Florida has so much to offer so why not camp where your “what to do” options are endless. Our property is located in Morriston, just off 41 in a quiet residential neighborhood with wide, well paved and maintained roads. Acreage is not fully fenced so drive up into the yard as you see fit while respecting these priceless old oaks. At this time we have potable water via a well system on site at 3 locations throughout the property but no electric or sewer is available yet. If you are planning to run a generator it must be turned off during quiet hours (11pm-7am) unless it is quiet enough not to disturb the neighbors. The sapphire waters at Rainbow Springs and the Rainbow River have drawn humans to dip in their cooling depths for 10,000 years. Today, Rainbow Springs State Park is home to one of Florida’s largest natural freshwater springs and features a day-use area with headsprings and nature trails, a tubing area, and the sole full-facility Rainbow Springs Campground. Swim and snorkel the headspring waters, or try canoeing, kayaking, paddling, and tubing down the river, keeping an eye out for water birds, turtles, and otters. Wander the nature trails past three waterfalls and take in the gardens of azaleas, magnolias, and oaks.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Notable Camping Spots in Rainbow

  1. Florida residents can make campsite reservations 11 months in advance, while non-residents can make reservations 10 months in advance. You can also call for potential same-day reservations.
  2. If you can’t reserve a spot ahead of time, show up first thing in the morning to grab any unreserved campsites, which are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  3. Book well in advance for popular weekends and holidays during the peak season. Otherwise, plan to stay during the week or between December and March. The campground is open year-round.

When to go

Peak season runs from March to November. The park is extremely popular on weekends and holidays, so it closes once capacity limits are reached—even to registered campers. Plan to arrive early during those periods, or visit during the week. Water temperatures average 72°F year-round and are particularly refreshing in the heat of summer. Tubing is only possible from April to September, when ranger-guided snorkeling tours are also available. Visit in February and March to catch blooming azaleas.

Know before you go

  • Tent campers should bring heavy-duty stakes for the gravel-packed camping pads and be prepared to hike their gear in a short distance for tent-only sites.
  • Swimming and snorkeling are restricted to the buoyed swimming area or fromboats outside the headsprings area. Inflatables are not permitted, and snorkelers are required to have a dive flag.
  • Canoe and kayak rentals are available from the Rainbow Springs launch site and campground store. Tube rentals and shuttles are available in season. 
  • Park walkways are not wheelchair-accessible, as they’re steep and uneven in spots. There are several accessible campsites, ADA-compliant restrooms, picnic areas, and lift chairs for spring swimming.

If you're headed to Rainbow Springs you are in for some of Florida's finest outdoors. Bring a picnic and hang out at the public swimming area, or if you're the more adventurous type we definitely recommend renting a canoe or kayak and exploring the river!
