The best camping in Arizona

·

Arizona is full of natural wonders, from the Grand Canyon to Saguaro National Park, with ample outdoor fun ranging from mountain biking to horseback riding. Much of the state is occupied by the Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts, but start exploring and you'll quickly discover that Arizona is more than just jackrabbits and cacti—there are lakes, rivers, mountains, forests, and miles of hiking trails. It's also a great place for sleeping under the stars, and while parts of Arizona can get a bit too hot for comfort in summer, those same places offer pleasant camping weather throughout much of the year.

Camp Saguaro is nestled in a unique and rural area on the west side of Tucson, Arizona. With the Saguaro National Park Visitor Center, Tucson Mountain Park, and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum all within four miles, there is plenty of opportunity to explore the outdoors. Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park boast hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and non-motorized mountain bikes are permitted on the trails in Tucson Mountain Park. Let us be your base camp for desert exploration whether it's hiking, riding, birdwatching, and learning. Come to Camp Saguaro and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the desert. Our friendly hosts can help you plan a great day, some of them even have their Certified Tourism Amabssador credentials. Please note: We are tobacco-free, medicinal herbs are legal and ok as long as children are not around. What to expect: We are in a rural neighborhood where most parcels are 1-3 acres, we have seven acres. It's quiet around here but along with the natural sounds of the desert like yipping coyotes, and woodpeckers pecking, you may hear a horse, dog, or chicken. While we are on the outskirts of Tucson, we are not completely remote. We have carved our sites out of the natural layout of the desert. There are many kinds of cactus in our area in addition to the magnificent Saguaro, and uneven areas when walking. We keep it as natural as possible. We have a small "Mercantile" on property. This is our office, but we also have items you may have forgotten, and souvenirs made by local artists. Also available is firewood, and ice is for sale for your convenience. We have a small Laundry Shack (two washers, two dryers) 2.00 wash/2.00 dry. You'll need cash for these things, we do not take any other form of payment at this time. Camp Saguaro is tobacco-free. Chevelon Canyon Highlands

6. Chevelon Canyon Highlands

Winslow West, AZ · 1 site · Tent, RV
Welcome to the edge of the high desert. Set at the very end of a quiet dirt road, this 230-acre private property offers rare access to vast open space, dramatic canyon views, and true solitude. Located about 30 minutes off pavement, the drive in is part of the experience. A medium-clearance vehicle is recommended, though high-clearance 4x4 is not required. The final mile becomes a bit rough at a few spots that cross sandstone, but there are no major obstacles for a standard truck or SUV. Off-road or higher-clearance travel trailers are welcome, provided they are not excessively long or low to the ground. The land itself is expansive and immersive. With over a mile of Chevelon Creek forming the southern boundary, the property drops into a massive canyon with 300-foot cliffs, sweeping views, and a sense of scale that feels more like a national park than private land. Advanced rock climbers have quietly begun establishing rappel routes and sport climbs into the canyon. While climbing access is informal and at your own discretion, the remoteness and openness of the area has long made it a haven for experienced adventurers. To the north, the property borders a large stretch of BLM land, offering endless room to explore, hike, and roam without crowds. Despite the size and openness, the land feels remarkably private. There are no neighbors in sight, no traffic, and no noise beyond wind, birds, and the canyon below. This is a place for those seeking something rare: – Overlanders looking for space, views, and quiet – Adventurers and climbers drawn to wild terrain – Retreat groups wanting privacy, inspiration, and room to breathe – Anyone craving the feeling of being far away, without being unreachable If you’re looking for polished amenities and tight campsites, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for scale, silence, stars, and a landscape that stops you in your tracks, you’ve found something special.

We have been busy painting, cleaning and improving the grounds to become a comfortable oasis for your family. Our location on US Hwy 89 on the east side of the highway is only a few miles from the breathtaking aspens of Lockett Meadow, the ruins of Wupatki National Monument and the lava flows at Sunset Crater. The park is a short drive to downtown Flagstaff, and on the way to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Moab and Durango. Stay the night or as long as you like! Drink in the hibiscus sunrises above the Painted Desert and relax into the long shadows of the San Francisco Peaks. Whether you’re rolling in with a big rig or pitching a tent, you’ll find a space that feels both open and welcoming. Campfires are allowed at every site, lighting up nights under starry desert skies. When you’re ready to stretch your legs, meet the “locals”: the working ranch on-site is home to emus, chickens, turkeys, peacocks and even a giant Sulcata tortoise—adding a fun wild-west-meets-farm-feel to the stay. And just beyond the campsite, you’ll find laundry, a small store stocked with ranch-fresh eggs, local honey, snacks, beer and wine. Warm mornings, cool evenings, and the peaceful hum of desert life make this a spot where you can slow down, breathe deep and connect with the outdoors—without sacrificing comfort. Highlights • Spacious pull-through RV sites: full hookups + WiFi. • Tent sites in a more rustic setting with water & basic facilities. • On-site ranch animals and plenty of open desert space to roam. • Store, laundry and shower house make for easy, comfortable stays. • Campfires allowed—perfect for a laid-back desert evening. Ideal For • RV travellers driving through Arizona who want full amenity support. • Tent campers looking for something more comfortable than “rough it” desert camping. • Families or groups who appreciate a bit of character (hello, emus!) in their campground. • Anyone wanting a peaceful desert base with a little ranch flavor, but still within reach of local conveniences.

The best camping in Arizona guide

Where to go

Northern Arizona

While northern Arizona's best-known attraction is the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, there’s plenty more to see and do, from visiting Lake Powell on the Colorado River to backcountry tent camping among the ponderosa pines in the Coconino National Forest, Prescott National Forest, and Kaibab National Forest. Sedona, just south of Flagstaff, also makes a great base for hiking among Arizona's Red Rocks or swimming in Oak Creek Canyon’s Slide Rock State Park.

Western Arizona

Dubbed Arizona's "West Coast," this part of the state offers all sorts of outdoor activities, much of which revolve around the Colorado River. The town of Yuma near the southern border is a popular spot, featuring an old Wild West prison and serving as a good base for visiting the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge. Attractions further north include Lake Havasu State Park, where you can swim, camp, or even check out the 19th-century London Bridge. Further north, the massive Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers year-round camping and easy access to two lakes.

Central Arizona

While it's easy to associate central Arizona with Phoenix sprawl, this region offers a lot for outdoorsy types, all within a short drive of the city. Popular spots for outdoors lovers include the Superstition Mountains in the Tonto National Forest, Lost Dutchman State Park, and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. If you're interested in archaeology, the Montezuma Castle National Monument is also worth a visit.

Southern Arizona

Southern Arizona is full of Wild West spirit, with a mix of historic ghost towns and scenic desert landscapes, plus plenty of forests, particularly in the Chiricahua Mountains. Must-visit parks include Saguaro National Park and Catalina State Park—both just outside Tucson. If it gets too hot, make like a local and head to Patagonia Lake State Park, a prime spot to swim and cool off from the Arizona heat.
