This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. We have a Native Plant Center where we grow up to 50 species of rare native plants. Ask us for a tour.

The Bamboo cabin is very private and has everything you need to just hang out. Saltgrass's location allows for many fun outdoor activities such as hiking at Kukutali Preserve State Park, crabbing, fishing, birding, bicycling and playing on the beach, my kids actually found a bottle with a message inside years ago. Alternatively, you could explore the many little shops in the towns of La Conner and Anacortes. There are multiple activities available, I would suggest calling ahead in order to book kayaking, rock climbing, whale watching, or a sailing charter. You could easily take a day trip to the San Juan Islands by taking a ferry ride out of Anacortes, walk on or book ahead if you are taking your car. Also, the Swinomish Casino and golf course are within two miles. While you're here you may meet our pup Turner, we also have two cats and several chickens. On the property are your hosts Jeri and Nancy, as well as our handyman Shawn, Saltgrass boasts beautiful flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and yes, the Bay. We try to live harmoniously with the land. We would love to share our space with you! Due to potential freezing weather and vulnerable water pipes, we have changed our booking to making a reservation confirmation. 2 acres of serenity. An opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We are a small hobby farm. We offer two different Glamping sites... a Yurt and a tent capsite. Your private getaway is secluded from the rest of the farm life but you are welcome to visit and partake in whatever the farm offers. We have Nigerian dwarf goats, apples, pears, plums, blackberries & Iris to enjoy. Wild animals abound. There are walking/biking trails right around the corner and you are 15 minutes from downtown, the ocean and enjoying sports like kayaking, swimming, whale watching, etc. Our glamping sites are completely off grid. Enjoy simplicity in comfortable luxury! We are dog friendly, and we require all guests to clean up after their dogs. There are plastic bags provided for animal waste disposal when dogs are in the backyard and on neighborhood walks. Cleaning up after pets includes excess pet hair, especially on furniture. Please use the waterproof pet blanket provided for the sofa and bed. Guests bring the animal onto the property at their own risk. The booking guest is liable for any damages that pets cause. (We will have to charge a cleaning fee if your dog leaves behind a mess or causes damage.) We find that most people are cooperative and responsible with their pets. We love traveling with our fur babies, and would like to keep allowing pets in our listings. Thank you for being understanding and working with us to keep our rental available to pets! Rules for dogs: 1. We do NOT have a fenced yard or space. If you have a dog that will wander, we require you to keep your dog on a leash or a lead. 2. We live in a country neighborhood and being good neighbors is very important to us. Excessive barking, making noise or being a nuisance to our neighbors is not allowed. 3. Clean up after your dog in the rental, around the rental and anywhere you take your dog in the neighborhood.

I stayed in the Willow Cabin for two nights over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was exactly the peaceful reset I was hoping for. I arrived after 9pm, and even in the dark, the property felt welcoming with its whimsical lighting guiding the way. Reg, the host, was there to greet me and walk me through everything — from the cozy cabin setup to the full outhouse bathroom and the little kitchen area with a fridge for essentials. The cabin itself is simple and calming, with a twin and a queen bed, both with fresh linens. Reg had the space heater going before I arrived, which was such a thoughtful touch. Since I stayed during the colder season, I was grateful I brought a heated blanket, and I’d recommend others do the same that time of year. The water straight from the tap was incredibly fresh and delicious, truly something you don’t get in the city — just a small detail that made the stay feel even more special. What really stood out to me was the beauty and quiet of the property. Reg genuinely encourages guests to wander and explore, and it made the whole stay feel more personal and grounding. It’s the perfect spot for anyone wanting to unplug, reflect, and enjoy a truly low-amenity, chill cabin experience. And I have to mention this — the shower water pressure and heat were amazing. Truly a highlight! If you know you enjoy a simple, peaceful, back-to-basics kind of stay, Willow Cabin is such a gem. I’d absolutely return.

This was a great visit. I ended up with the entire site to myself (cause frankly who is camping for thanksgiving) My whole family lives in other states, I’m here alone with my two pets. It’s weird being alone for holidays so I booked this to get away from the city and really just enjoy my time alone. The moss covered trees, the swing, the treehouse itself, was such a pleasant experience. So quiet and peaceful. The hosts were easy to reach via text and even checked in on me mid stay. 10/10 would recommend

We were visitin from fl late nov, didnt realize apparently its off season and most things are closed lol. Beautiful place tho located in the north cascades. Close proximity to a couple resturants and gas stations. When we pulled in saw a bunch of deer. Friendly staff , have bathrooms and laundry on site. Would definitely recommend

Great spot on the middle of the island. Quiet and peaceful. No power but clean and dry. Fire pit offered a great spot for an evening campfire. Very clean, cots for sleeping. Bring headlamps. Running water, shower and toilet clean and about 60 - 80 yds from the cabin. Great host and spot!

What a great spot, just across the road from the Skagit River. Very relaxing and beautiful! They were super nice to us and both the camp host and maintenance guy helped us get to a spot. We had some issues early on with getting to the campground, but after a three day delay we made it. We will certainly stay here again!

Such a great experience! This is the perfect Hipcamp for those that want a hub for surrounding activities! I enjoyed the site and the host was very appropriately communicative. The description of the place is perfectly honest. Expect a visit from fluffy dogs and lots of farm and wilderness sounds. I heard a barred owl when I first arrived. Tasty water and the sauna and bathroom/shower is perfect!

Reg’s hundred acre wood is a charming mix of huts and outbuildings new and old. The vegetation overgrowth and misty air conceal various construction materials and antiques around the property. Dishes and coffee are available, and the BBQ worked as long as you can squeeze into the narrow place where it’s situated. The washroom is cute, the kitchen is slated for demolition, and the cabin we stayed in was warm. Reg was enthusiastic about showing us around the property, and introducing us to the sheep.

Ian is an inspiration, and staying on his property is more than just a fun adventure, it helped my family disconnect from our busy lives and reconnected with nature and each other. Although the barn is rustic and open, it still stood up to the rainy cold weather and allowed us to extend our camping season. We enjoyed the fire pit while we could, and we were happy to have the covered outdoor kitchen as well. The composting toilet was a unique experience somehow making even a bathroom trip a bit magical as it provides for privacy while also giving you a view of the beautiful forest. Seeing what he has been able to transform this space into, has already inspired us to start our own projects. Ian's passion is contagious! The kids truly enjoyed the play area with the zipline, swings and giant seesaw! We will be planning another trip here for sure and we are looking forward to checking out the other lodging options and or the camping sites. Maybe we will get lucky enough for a warm summer adventure and enjoy swimming in the pond. Ian was very welcoming and full of great info. Anyone would be lucky to get to experience some time here!
