This was a 55-acre farm, split in half to accommodate a bypass through Charlottesville, so the previous owners had to give up half the land, and actually moved the house down to the other half of the property! They had to build a land bridge to get to the new home site, so they turned the bridge into a dam and created a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo. My wife Stephanie and I bought the property in early 2017 and have turned it into a private horse farm, adding pastures, a riding ring, and 6-stall barn. There are ~21 horses who live on the property. The property is unique in that you can hardly see another house from anywhere on the property and yet we are only 2 miles from Barracks Rd. Ginkgo Ridge sits on the eastern side of the Southwest Mountains, which is the first mountain range west of the Atlantic. The views are big and far. Some say you can even see Portugal! Wildlife, including eagles, hawks, turkey, fox, rabbit, deer, fireflies and more are abundant on the 66-acre property. If you are interested in history, ask John. He will tell you about the Civil War battle fought here and the tobacco baron who once owned the estate. Two of our cabins are off grid — no electric and no plumbing but with alternative water and light. The third and newest enjoys electric. While there is no "running" water, we bring you fresh spring water. And while there is no electric in 2 cabins we make up for it with solar and battery lights and fans. We also offer a propane heater in all 3 to keep you toasty in cooler weather. Both off-grid cabins are equipped with a comfy, luxury queen-sized bed and box spring with fresh linens and plenty of pillows, a chair, and tables. The cabins are approximately 12x14 of interior living space plus a semi covered 16’ x 8’ deck with chairs and table. The original cabin is slightly smaller interior than the lower cabin. The newest third cabin is called the Boxwood Overlook Cabin, because it is surrounded by huge boxwoods and overlooks the entire property. It sits where the original main house was located, but burned down in the 1920's. It is more luxurious that the other 2. It's 12x20, includes an organic queen bed, refrigerator, reclining chairs, interior and exterior lights. And you can drive right to the front door. Each cabin gets a propane heater which keeps you toasty even on the coldest winter nights. In warmer months, the 2 off-grid cabins have battery-powered fans with plenty of industrial batteries. They also enjoys plenty of solar powered torch lamps which offer a terrific ambiance. We do recommend you bring flashlights and or headlamps. If you forget, no worries, we got you covered. The Boxwood Overlook cabin has electricity with interior and exterior lights, refrigerator and AC in the summer. All the cabins enjoy 5-gallon containers of fresh spring water and their own private Loo House/bathroom. The Loo Houses or bathrooms are semi open air. They have roofs, a solar bag shower, and bedside commodes with large, disposable, biodegradable bag inside with special sand that solidifies your waste. You dispose of the bag at a nearby trash box off property, just like a diaper. Extra bags are available. Each cabin has its own fire pit and grill with everything you need to make a fire, including split wood, kindling, newspaper and lighter. Firewood is $7.50 per crate. And if you need help starting your fire, no worries, John will help you. The "Jefferson Sea" is a description many attribute to the nation's 4th President, Thomas Jefferson, who enjoyed the same ocean-like view (but better) of fields and trees below his home at Monticello, that is located 15 miles down the road. Enjoy giant Ginkgo trees (especially in the Fall), boxwood gardens, colossal Tulip Poplars, and Osage Orange trees, and wild organic raspberries in July. We support BIPOC and all are welcome to enjoy our property :) There is a 2-night minimum on weekends. Just down the hill is the historic town of Gordonsville with perhaps the best BBQ on the east coast, wine tasting room, two breweries, several cafes and restaurants, grocery store and liquor store. We really enjoy meeting campers and providing suggestions about what to do on and around our property, though we also respect guests' need for privacy and quiet-time if that is preferred. Hello! We are family farm mainly focused on Nigerian Dwarf and Mini-Nubian goats, Kunekune pigs, and silkie chickens! We also have a couple cows, peacocks, alpaca, ducks, quail, pigeons, sheep, mini equine, and rabbits. We can offer as much or as little farm experience as you’d like! Lend us a hand or book baby goat cuddling and sit in the pasture in a sea of friendly goats!! Baby goat cuddling and farm tours can be added on for an extra fee, check our extras! We usually get up early and do our farm chores, and depending on the time of year we could be bottle feeding baby goats or calves, delivering baby goats, or working on outdoor farm projects. Our home was built in 1864 and our barn is original! Our property is not far from Montpelier, the home of our 4th president, and about an hour from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. We love wine tasting in Charlottesville, and taking day trips to Shenandoah National Park. We are 45 minutes from Fredericksburg, 28 minutes from Culpeper, and 20 minutes from Lake Anna. I had a glorious time at the Bears Den! First time camping in Appalachia even though I'm a Virginia Beach native and it did not disappoint. All the directions and instructions online and on site were accurate and helpful as well Glen being welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. We had a wonderful time during our stay at this peaceful retreat. The hot tub, sauna, trails, and fire pit with homemade pizzas were absolutely amazing, and even better with the snowfall. It was a great place to stay and we would love to come back.

Camp in comfort in an enchanted forest! Enjoy the RV, 6-burner propane grill, lighting, and all that you see in the following photos!

Have a big group? There's plenty of room around the camper for tents. We also rent out tents, sleeping pads, etc.

The place is amazing! Me my wife and our fur baby loved everything about the place. It has a rustic vibe surrounded by farm animals and wild life! The only thing I would have changed was we didn’t stay long enough! The fresh eggs were amazing to have for breakfast, wish I would have got more than just a dozen. And Rodney, the host was such great guy. You have your own little private spot to just sit back and enjoy. We will definitely be coming back in the short future to see the horses, goats, and other animals again.

The campsite was great! People are friendly and the view was fantastic. All the sites are located in a clearing next to the trail, and they all had fire pits and benches available. The owner was very friendly as well.

The barn apartment sits tucked into the woods overlooking the main garden and farm store area.

The Butterfly campsite is just beautiful. Great mountain views and plenty of seating to enjoy them. Jennifer was a helpful host who made it a comfortable and easy stay - the tipi tent with air mattress made this feel extra special!

1 acre campsite has a bathhouse with flushing toilet, mini outdoor kitchen, solar outdoor shower, tent pad, table for 8, firepit with grill and horseshoe pit.

This location is pretty amazing. Right in the Blue Ridge Mountains you are surrounded. The camp is easy to find with a beautiful drive in and out with restaurants and eateries near by. Lots to do and I'll be back soon.

This was such a lovely area! I mainly carcamped but the lot was extremely accessible to the sites. The area is somewhat secluded (although actual camp sites are pretty close quarters). I am already planning to go back in the spring!

Arrived after dark. The signage was not clear but quickly found a spot (open field) and set up camp. Didn’t download directions to Old Rag but found it quickly with directions from the lodge. Dinner buffet style at the lodge was fantastic. Overall a great camping adventure!!!
