This property overlooking the beautiful Connecticut river (no access to) has two cabins to choose from, one sleeps two people and the other can accommodate three. The property is such a peaceful spot! We have a rustic outhouse, and showers can be taken in the main farmhouse on the property if you would like, available Monday thru Saturday from 8am to 9am. So that means Sundays are not available or evenings. The cabin is outfitted with a comfy bed, fridge, and microwave and coffee maker. We sell firewood to sit around a cozy campfire at night and stargaze! You can even purchase a S'mores package as well! Enjoy a cup of coffee in the mornings and listen to the birds. Bottled water is included as well and placed in your fridge upon arrival. Potable water also easily accessible. We will do our best to make you feel at home away from home. In a way that is never intrusive, we respect your privacy. Come and unwind with nature all around you. We are very pet friendly! And ask that all dogs are on a leash while outside. Also, pets are not to be left in the cabins unattended at any time. So, with all that said get yourself and your pets here and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning on your deck looking out to the river. Don't set an alarm, the loons or geese may wake you first!  Listen to the birds and relax!  And if luck is with you, you might spot a bald eagle!   Want to play with goats? We have them! Come say hi to Sam and Frodo! Fresh eggs are available for sale and you can even say hi to the chickens on site! $5.00 a dozen!! Hiking trails are nearby including Groton State Forest, hiking near Willoughby Lake is only about 45 minutes away and is worth the trip! This off-the-grid homestead sits on a quiet dirt road just outside the quaint village of Chester. Spread across 28 acres, the property features streams and trails to explore. The 8' x 14' Studio, complete with an accessible entry ramp, offers an elevated porch overlooking the garden, Adirondack chairs, an outdoor kitchen with table, grill and two-burner camp stove as well as a fire pit. Guests also have access to an accessible bathroom with a clawfoot tub located in the main house, about 250 feet from the Studio. An outdoor shower attached to the main house is also available. A wood-fired barrel sauna can be reserved for an additional charge. Frank, Julie, and their a very chill black Lab, Skye (who roams off-leash) welcome all visitors, from local to international, LGBTQ+, and those of all abilities. Chester itself offers a small grocery store, convenience store, a great coffee/sandwich shop, wine store, and several restaurants. Hiking trails are available both on the property and in the village, while Okemo Mountain, Mount Ascutney, and Lowell Lake State Park are just 20 minutes away. Learn more about this land: Texas Hill Brook camp site The Texas Hill Brook site is a flat, wooded campsite on Texas Hill Brook in Huntington. The campsite is roughly 10m x 30m (30' x 100'), large enough for several tents or a small camper/RV. It is accessed by a sloped 50m (about 150') gravel driveway. The narrowest part of the driveway is 2.6m (about 8.5 feet). There is a 3m x 3m (10' x 10') tent platform and a large picnic table. Firewood is provided. Near our home about 120m/400 feet away through the trees but relatively private. Within a short pedal or drive to some of the best mountain biking and hiking Vermont has to offer, 15 minutes to Richmond and Hinesburg, and just a half hour to Burlington. Electricity on site, primitive fire pit, but no other facilities, so ALL waste must be packed out. We have a bucket commode to loan if you don’t have your own.

Weekend Trip to Vermont Homestead

Frank and Julie were the picture of hospitality! They were engaging to talk to, so curious about our lives, kind, and great at checking in about miscellaneous needs we might have (like do we have enough camp supplies, etc). The Studio is so precious as is the beautiful gravel road their property is on, their sweet lab, Skye, and the stars at night! I loved this getaway -- thanks Frank and Julie

This was my second stay at the Zen Cabin. I just love the peace that surrounds the whole property. The cabin is very comfortable and there's a nice propane stove to keep it warm. I can't say enough about how good the well water is. For me, this is the perfect place to disconnect with the chaos of the world and connect with nature. Beautiful!

I had a great stay at Ryegate. The cabin was warm and homey, a nice break from camping when the rain and cold arrived. Jessica was welcoming, communicative and responsive. She provided good information about the stay and was kind enough to let me use the shower in the farmhouse, which was much appreciated. The cabin really has all you need... shelter, a cozy bed, a microwave, fridge, and coffee station. Sitting on the front porch with coffee overlooking the river and the mountain tree line is a wonderful way to spend a peaceful morning! The cabin is decorated very cute, which is a nice bonus. Note: You need to be up for a bit of outdoor life ... like using an outhouse and washing dishes in a sink outside. It isn't primitive but it is glamping.

Peaceful evening. Cabin equipped with the things we needed. Rustic but in a good way. Found plenty of firewood around to use for the night. Bed was comfy. Nice family and very welcoming. Getty (food and store) up the road was worth a stop too.

Wonderful place all around! This place was so peaceful and beautiful. We loved the added bonus of being able to visit the goats, ducks, and chickens! The cabin was so cozy and warm- perfect for fall. Jessica was an amazing host and super attentive. We hope to visit again!

We had a great stay at the Zen Cabin. The cute little cabin was just as advertised. Mitchell welcomed us and made sure we were all set. The temperature was forecasted to dip in to the 30s and he made sure the heater was working so we would be comfortable. It was a nice sleep after a fun wedding down the road. My wife and I enjoyed a crisp morning overlooking the field while we drank our coffee and looked at the cows who came to say hi. We only had a short stay, but it was clear that Mitchell and the Zen Cabin are a great little find in Northern Vermont.

Before diving back into the grind, we snuck away for one last summer retreat—and the Studio delivered. Secluded yet convenient: It felt like cabin camping, but with real home comforts (think hot showers and no hole-digging required). The Studio was 15 minutes from a supermarket, 5 minutes from a local market, and just 3 minutes from fresh eggs and frozen meat that made our mouths water. Natural entertainment: We nibbled wild blackberries along the property trails, stepped into the barrel sauna for a sweat session with a hit of aromatherapy bliss (ahhh), and watched flames dance in the fire pit while stars twinkled overhead. Mornings came with surround-sound birdsong and a picture window framing trees doing their best shimmy show. Hospitable hosts: Missing camping skills? No problem—the hosts had us covered. They shared spot-on local recommendations tailored to our interests and left thoughtful surprises (which we’ll let you discover for yourself). This place definitely earned a spot on our repeat list.

this was such a lovely spot! the bed was cozy, a nice wooden futon, and the cabin was spacious enough for all our extra gear to live inside overnight. the composting toilet is nice and clean, the parking is right beside the cabin and the firepit was perfectly placed to watch the sunset from our hammocks. Mitchell was a kind and gracious host and we felt very well taken care of, their dog was sweet and unobtrusive and knew enough to leave our dogs alone. the area of craftsbury is adorable, make sure you grab some firewood from the local spot on the way in.
