Located at the base of Birdseye Mountain, off a dirt road, you can explore the mountain, streams, and diverse hardwood forest. The cabin is a 5-minute uphill walk from your vehicle along a trail. From the property, you can enjoy hiking, ice climbing, and mountain biking. The Bird Mountain summit is about 2 miles from the cabin, incredible gravel biking begins right outside your door, and the singletrack trails at Slate Valley Trails are nearby (about 50 minutes by bike on scenic Class 4 roads or 20 minutes by car). More than 3,000 acres of public land, including the Birdseye State Wildlife Management Area, are just up the road. Our primitive cabin is about a 5-minute walk from your parking spot. It is an uphill walk of about 300 yards through the forest with about 100 feet of elevation gain. The trail is well marked. The site is very secluded and has a seasonal stream with waterfall just off the front porch. Folding chairs and an outside fire pit are also provided. There is a woodstove, but the cabin is not insulated. If you are booking during the winter plan on a winter camping experience with some relief from the stove, but it will still be cold. For sleeping there is a queen size wood bunk downstairs with a full sized bunk on top of it. In the loft (access via a ladder) there are two moveable nylon camp cots; otherwise guests should bring pads (if desired) for sleeping. There are two sleeping bags and pillows stored at the cabin that can also be used. If these are used, please bring sleeping bag liners or sheets (travel sheets) to use inside the sleeping bag. The cabin has a single solar powered overhead light, a two burner propane cooking area, a wood stove, basic cookware (pots, pans), coffee percolator, cups, mugs, eating utensils, plates, bowls. There is 5 gallons of drinking water supplied along with a bit of coffee. A primitive mulching compost outhouse with a normal toilet seat is available outside the cabin. Bird mountain (Birdseye) can be hiked by staying straight on the cabin access trail. The mountain trail is unmarked, but is a wonderful 4-mile round trip hike with multiple viewpoints along the way. There are additional recreation opportunities found by traveling farther up the dirt road towards Herrick Mountain. Gravel biking on 4th class roads and hiking is possible.
