2 nights at Fruitdale Farm

this farm has been on my Hipcamp wishlist for a while now. finally, everything lined up to get to sneak away for a parts of three days to celebrate our nine year anniversary. off-grid and disconnected enough to have some peace, but just enough cell signal to handle life as needs arise. everything is beautiful + well thought out. the other cabin and camp sites looked adorable. but I’m very grateful we got to experience sugar shack. it was nestled back in the woods with plenty of privacy. the trails are well marked. and everywhere you look are little pockets of love + intention from Aimee’s hands. you can tell how well she loves the land here. the woods are rich with life. fungi, wildflowers, 17 year cicadas, her chickens, cats, and fish. the sauna was a real treat. the pond was fun to play in, some of the fish even let me pet them. I went to the sauna and alternated from sauna to shower, as it instructed, and felt a deep sense of peace. the walk back to the cabin was perfect. the cabin itself has everything basic you’ll need for coziness and meals and lighting. it’s so charming. every aspect of life there became so dear, however brief. if I have one singular thing that could be improved, it’s the shower attached to the host residence. my husband is horribly afraid of spiders. and the biggest wolf (?) spider stared him down in there preventing his time there to be as magical as mine. bugs and spiders are expected. but may be good to keep up on. see you next year!

Weekend Trip to Catfish Ranch Camp

It was a great last minute stay, host was very responsive and helpful. The pond is very well kept and the kids stayed busy catching fish for many hours. Firewood was provided and the pit was even ready to start when we arrived. Site #2 was well shade and protected by from the wind, very little bugs.

3 nights at Ohio River Private Paradise

What an honor it was to stay here on Hollys Ohio River Paradise Pavilion! This place is gorgeous & pictures simply don't do it justice! The Pavilion itself gave an extra cozy feel for an easy camp kitchen set up & area to hang out & stay dry when the weather just isn't cooperating. There was more than plenty of room to set up our tent, & even with a cabin just a short distance away & within site there was plenty of trees and natural cover to tuck away & not be seen if you want a more private feel (we had the property all to ourselves so that didn't matter much to us). There is a nice and clean outhouse to use as well! The campsite is just a short walk from the river with beautiful views of the river from the campsite area itself. The fire ring was large & could hold a good size fire that several people could sit around. It was just 2 of us & it was quiet & secluded but the area is large enough that it would be an amazing group camp site. We enjoyed watching the barges & there is a train but we maybe only heard it 3-5 times the whole weekened. If your going for the fishing come prepared because it's a harder area to fish unless your experienced. Luckily we had everything we needed & caught a couple blue cats & striped bass. We also enjoyed a variety of birds & listening to the owls at night. So you may ask, beautiful place with a view, fishing, wild life, and privacy. How could it be better. The answer is Holly. She is kind, helpful, responsive, and makes you feel at home!

PARADISE!! Everything you could want is available at Fruitdale Farm. All four cabins were in pristine condition and decorate with such cute art. The kitchen was supplied with all the essentials to make a quick cup of coffee or prep an entire meal. Our daughters (ages 5-11) were able to venture off on their own and explore because all the trails are so clearly marked. The pond offers a refreshing spot to cool down in the sun and a place to gather around a fire at night to a lovely cacophony of wildlife sounds. 10/10!!

Weekend Trip to Cabin and Tent Camping On The River

The Morgan’s property is a little slice of heaven! We went on a very rainy weekend yet it was still so beautiful and relaxing that we hated to leave. The cabin is well stocked with everything you could hope for - from a camping chair, games, lights, cooking pan to a jug of water for hand washing. The outhouse was by far the cleanest we have ever used which was a much appreciated bonus. We can’t wait to come back and enjoy it when the sun is shining! *we highly recommend going to Hawks Run Market - especially if you’re gluten free like me!*

Weekend Trip to Turtleback Ridge

This was my second stay at Turtleback Ridge, and Keegan suggested a different spot—a little more private, scenic, and quiet as the first, and still an easy walk to the brewery. One might not think camping would lead to restful sleep the night before a bike race, but this site delivers. The hosts are incredibly helpful, gracious, and considerate. Oh, and they make some amazing beers that are worth the trip on their own. Even with the rainy weather, it was a peaceful, no-fuss place to settle in. I’ll definitely be back.

Close to downtown restaurants and shopping, but feels like you are out in the wilderness. You must bring your own camp toilet, this is very primitive. It is not uncommon to see natural wildlife such as deer, squirrel, and raccoon. Fishing is permitted (largest one caught was 6”). Responsible fire welcome, firewood can be purchased on site. Several hiking trails on site.

Come stay at our little sustainable farmstead amid the beautiful rolling hills of southern Ohio! Our peaceful 20 acres has a good mix of woods, wild meadows and maintained cleared areas as well as a small pond, all of which can be explored via our nature trail. Enjoy the sounds of nature and an incredible night sky. Farm fresh eggs and fresh produce are available for purchase during the growing season and firewood is available all year round. There is also a wonderful sauna on the property that can be reserved. Great hiking, kayaking, biking, birding, fishing, swimming, and disc-golfing opportunities just a few miles away at Paint Creek State Park and the Highland Nature Sanctuary. Amish country is also just 15 minutes away with a great bakery, markets and greenhouses. This area is home to an impressive network of ancient earthworks including the world famous Serpent Mound. Our accommodations range from primitive tent-camping to "glamping" in one of our tiny off-grid cabins. The sites are spaced out for privacy and each site offers a private picnic table and fire pit. There are two shared privies/outhouses which have basic composting toilets. A grassy parking area is provided near the road, however, ALL SITES ARE WALK-IN ONLY. POINTS OF INTEREST in the area: The HIGHLANDS NATURE SANCTUARY (7 miles away), previously called "7 Caves" is highly recommended for some beautiful hiking. There is a small museum (The Appalachian Forest Museum) at the main trailhead by the parking area... the folks there can direct you to a couple of other great trails nearby if you're interested in further hiking. NOTE: Most of the trails within the sanctuary are not open to dogs, however, there are a couple of dog-friendly trails (inquire at the museum). Museum is closed for the winter (Nov-March). **Recommended trails: Valley of the Ancients (1/2mile, start at museum) and the Barrett's Rim Trail (2.5 mile loop) and the Kamelands Trail, which are both accessible during the pandemic. AMISH BAKERY (Country Crust Bakery) & MARKET (JRs General Store)* on 41 South in Bainbridge (15-20min away): The bakery is a great lunch stop for a fresh, soft Pretzel Bun sandwich (delicious) and to load up on fresh baked goods (the apple fritter is my fave!). The market, which is almost right across from the bakery, is also worth checking out... delicious deli sandwiches and great deals on spices, cheeses, pickles, jams, bulk foods, produce, etc. Watch out for horse & buggy traffic... and bicycles! *The Amish accept cash or check only and are closed on Sunday. In the teeny town of BAINBRIDGE (10-15min away): There are some nice antique/primitive shops around; in particular, Ancient Valley Mercantile has a nice selection of antiques as well as local art, gifts, gourmet coffees, local honey, etc. There's a wonderful little cafe (634 Coffee + Cafe, inside the historic Paxton Theater) that offers coffee drinks, pastries, soups and sandwiches. Stop into Pap's Hilltop Honey and Distillery, where you can purchase and sample a variety of moonshine flavors and cocktails. The Paxton Restaurant has good home cooked meals and a variety of pies and cheesecakes for dessert. Or grab an ice cream at the Dairy Queen before strolling the primitive shops. PAINT CREEK LAKE STATE PARK: (2 miles away) There are dog-friendly hiking trails (the harmony trail and little pond trail are personal favorites), mountain bike trails, a 21-hole disc golf course, boat ramp (if you have kayaks, you can paddle around on the lake... this spot is excellent at sunset), and a camp store that has ice and hand-dipped ice cream. There is also a BEACH, which is good for picnicking and swimming, located at the southern entrance, off of SR 50. GREENFIELD: This town is closer (5 miles) and larger than Bainbridge and good for getting supplies. There are some restaurants, bars and supermarkets (Community Markets, at the further end of town, is recommended over the Save-a-Lot), El Canon (Mexican) would be my restaurant of choice if you decide to eat out. Catch 22 Sports Bar has good burgers and there are plenty of pizza options for dine in or take-out. COVERED BRIDGE: There is a sweet little covered bridge that you can still drive across in the tiny town of South Salem, just a 5 minute drive away. To get there from here, take 41 North and then take a right onto Lower Twin Rd and drive a few miles and you will come to the bridge. SERPENT MOUND (about 30 miles away, Peebles, OH) is an internationally known National Historic Landmark built by the ancient American Indian cultures of Ohio. It is an effigy mound representing a snake with a curled tail. Nearby are three burial mounds—two created by the Adena culture (800 B.C.–A.D. 100), and one by the Fort Ancient culture (A.D. 1000–1650). A must see! CHILLICOTHE (Ohio's first capital): (30 minutes away) The historic downtown boasts charming architecture and is perfect for exploring on foot. Several local shops, restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and bars. A lovely city park with a small lake is host to a year-round population of ducks, geese and swans. There is also a disc golf course and skate park in the city park. There is frequent live music, gourmet cocktails and a wide variety of craft beer at Steiner's Speakeasy (an Americana-style bourbon bar of America). GREAT SEAL STATE PARK (about 35 miles away in Chillicothe): If you are into mountain biking, you will find some of the best trails in the state here (start at the Lick Run parking area). There is also a great disc golf course here along with a picnic shelter and a playground for the kids. FORT HILL EARTHWORKS & NATURE PRESERVE: (30 minutes away) This preserve encompasses 1300 acres of mature woodlands and 11 miles of some of the best hiking trails in the state. Part of the Old Growth Forest Network, there are remnants of the temperate deciduous forests that once covered all of the eastern United States. For archaeology enthusiasts, there is a stone and earthen wall hilltop enclosure, as well as a smaller circular earthwork (both of which can be difficult to discern).

You can also rent a tube from us and go up and down our property or hang out on your tube anchored by the beach. We can also shuttle you upstream on Saturdays and Sundays. We know other special local spots we can let you in on, too. We are just a 1/2 mile from the Little Miami Bike Trail and close to Caesar's Creek, Cowan Lake, YMCA's Camp Kearn, and Camp Joy. Plain Folk Music Cafe, Fresh to Morrow, Valley Vineyards, and Little River Cafe, are also short drives if you want to grab a bite to eat and vibe on some cool, local hangouts. The Viking Longhall

The Viking longhall has been 9 years in the making by a group of semi serious Viking enthusiasts: the result is a 60 foot long building that has 18, 8,x4' sleeping berths. Set apart from the main open area it also boasts 2 meeting rooms and a kitchen. The campsite is a very peaceful place. Some go as far as to say a healing place! We are proud of what we have achieved and now want people to come out and enjoy it also. The field is close enough to the Appalachian highway (state route 32) for convenience, but far enough not to be bothered by it. The area is steeped in Native American culture. In fact, the world famous Serpent Mound is but 8 miles away, with many other Adena culture sites within easy driving distance. It's also in the heart of the Amish community. The area is known for its natural beauty with many hiking trails and canoeing opportunities. The area is awash in beauty and history from the ancient mound culture to the amish culture. The area has many hiking trails some of which are part of the buckeye trail and range in length from an easy 1 mile loop to rugged hikes of many miles. Trails through the woods are being worked on, and facilities expanded as the seasons pass. Hiking, kayaking, biking, birding, fishing, hunting, swimming, and more are available at several state parks and historical sites like within 10-30 minutes of the farm. Amish country is likewise near at hand with several bakeries, markets, furniture shops, and greenhouses. Our primitive sites are spaced for privacy, with a gravel parking area near the cottage and additional field parking is available near the road on the opposite site of the main house. While most sites are walk-in only, the upper field sites may be able to be parked near and the Lower Meadow, Boneyard, and Oak Grove may be able to be driven to, as weather and site conditions permit.

This is a primitive camp with three sites available for you to consider. We are dog friendly and allow all supervised, friendly dogs to be off leash. Some things to know: We will provide a key code close to your arrival time so you can enter the gate by the road. If you are coming by river, we will put a flag on our landing. You can drive your vehicle right down to the sites. The farm is flat and easily navigated as long as it is dry. There will be a 5 gallon cooler of potable water for you to use. More water is available if we are at the property. We have 2 outhouses located on either end of the property. This is a primitive camp. Please pack out all your trash and leave no trace. 2 kayaks with paddles and life jackets are available for an additional fee, but we need ample notice. Firewood is plentiful by the river in the form of driftwood. We have some wood under a black tarp by the pavilion fire pit available for an additional fee. We have one neighbor who can make some noise with ORVs especially on weekends. As you approach the cabin and campsite, the trail opens up to an acre of green space shaded by large Sycamore, Walnut, and other native trees. Take a dip in the river, enjoy people watching as canoeist pass, or take part with a canoe or kayak rental from a nearby business (within 3 miles). The Little Miami Trail is also less than a mile down the road so bring your bike! The composting outhouse is serviced between each stay, meaning it's emptied, sanitized, and like new for each new guest. *Depending on your group size, the host may need to service/empty the outhouse once daily. There are two established campfire locations and a picnic table is provided. *This is a family residence. The hosts live onsite and although you will not see them from your site, you will likely hear kids/adults playing outside and possibly weekend tasks such as mowing/weed eating/etc. Other "noise pollution" may come from canoeists passing by or the gun/ATV riding club which is a 1/4 mile down the river. This property is tucked away and you wouldn’t even know you’re close to town once you’re on site. Valley Vineyards is right down the road to enjoy a bottle of wine and cook your own steak dinner nights. Take a trip to visit Fort Ancient with a day hike. A Native American earthworks complex, the largest hilltop enclosure in the world and soon to be a World Heritage site! Enjoy some canoeing on the Little Miami River a State and National scenic river which is within walking distance. We have kayaks on location for the kids to play in the creek and creeks to hike with numerous fossils deposits. Southwestern Ohio is famous for its Ordovician fossil deposits. Kings Island is approximately 20 minute drive and the Ohio renaissance Festival is near. Caesars creek state park in Cowan lake state park is within a short drive. Smallmouth Bass fishing is awesome on Todd’s Fork and we have plenty of area to Wade fish.

Mawhe Acres Camping Retreat has two primitive camp sites just inside the tree line of an open field, each with a 16' x 16' crushed limestone pad for tents. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring and access to a compost toilet (in outhouse). There is no potable water or electric. However, for a nominal fee, we can provide a water hose to the campsite. There's easy access with the ability to drive through the field to the campsite or guests can walk in with their gear from driveway. We're fine with car camping too - we just want to keep things as natural as possible. Mawhe Acres - a 25 acre farm, much of which is raw land and woods in their natural state, undeveloped and not farmed for decades - is an official National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) Certified Wildlife Habitat™ site. NWF recognizes our commitment to sustainably providing the essentials of wildlife habitat - natural sources of food, water, cover and places to raise young. The abundant wildlife around includes deer, squirrels, red foxes, turkeys, chipmunks, groundhogs, raccoons, opossums, woodpeckers, owls, and birds of prey (mostly red-tailed hawks and vultures). We have a small lake with good fishing and acres of woods to explore. There are some footpaths for easier walking. We want to share our beautiful land for our guests to enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of the forest which can help you relax. In fact, it’s possible that time in the great outdoors can boost both your mental and physical health.
