The trees here are some of the oldest around, since it was already wooded when it became owned by the state in 1923. Most other forests were only just growing into what they are now from abandoned farms.
You never know what you might see in Tunxis State Forest, although we can give you some ideas. If you go for a hike through these old trees, you might spy a moose munching on foliage, or a black bear bumbling about. A Touch of Hardwick History
In 1686, Captain Samuel Ruggles and seven men purchased this land from the Nipmuck people for twenty British pounds. His grandson, Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles, became a notorious Loyalist — driven from Hardwick at dawn by his own brother Benjamin, who warned him: “Cross today and you will never cross again alive.” His daughter Bathsheba became the first woman executed in the newly independent United States, for murdering her husband — told in Murdered by His Wife by Deborah Navas.

The bunk house is on the lower part of the pond, making it more accessible as parking is right at the door.
There are private camp sites for guests who prefer to pitch a tent or park their van or RV. There's a portable toilet on site seasonally for guests staying on the lower half of the farm.

If you live in eastern Connecticut like many residents of the state do, and you’re looking for a place to reconnect with nature but don’t want to travel far, allow us to introduce you to Begelow Hollow State Park and neighboring Nipmuch State Forest. With 9,000 acres of wooded hills and an 18-acre pond, the whole population of Hartford could get lost here.
If getting lost is indeed what you’d like to do, you can do so by land or water. Getting lost by canoe on the pond is highly recommended, although getting lost in the forest is equally pleasurable. However, we should clarify that we are referring to “getting lost” metaphorically. It is not actually a good idea to physically lose your sense of direction here. If you do get lost, for real, trace your steps, blow a whistle, something!

Our 2 acre property and home is located in the center of the small town of Leverett. We have a private camping spot located down by the stream. We are near a paved road with moderate traffic.
The property abuts many acres of woods and there are a number of great walking trails nearby. A half-mile walk behind the house takes you through the forest to an outlook on Leverett Pond.
The Peace Pagoda is just a few miles up the road. Other nearby destinations include Cushman Market and Cafe, the Montague Bookmill, and Mt. Toby waterfall, caves, and lookout tower.
Leverett Pond has a public boat launch nearby. We have canoes, paddles, and lifejackets available for rent--inquire for details!
The area has excellent bike riding as well. We enjoy all these activities and are happy to share further destinations, routes, and suggestions!

Our property is 85 very private acres with an open field surrounded by forest and open wooded area with many trails. The forest is very diverse including some old growth maples and birches, as well as hemlock and pine trees. The campsites are at the edge of the field set back into the woods. I have recently added sand and gravel to improve drainage since the heavy rain we have had last year. We have a portable composting toilet outhouse and a hot outdoor shower. Feel free to explore all of the trails on foot or mountain bike. You may see some turkeys or deer out there. There is a small pond with lots of frogs and salamanders near the camping area, and a few seasonal streams on the property. You can hike a one mile loop on our newest trail. It is medium difficulty because of the hillside it is built on so hiking boots are recommended unless you are on a mountain bike. Rock walls built in the mid 1800s circle the property almost entirely so the borders are easy to see.
The Deerfield river is a few miles away where you can fish for trout or go for a swim or kayak. The Connecticut river and the green river are about 15 minutes away as well. We have tubes, a canoe, and a kayak that are available to rent for some floating! Historic Deerfield village and Yankee Candle store and factory are about 10 minutes away. We are about 20 minutes from Northampton and Amherst.

I'm about 20 minutes from Mount Wachusett and 5 minutes from the Quabbin. Lots of hiking all around, including from my farm (a nice 3 mile walk through a wildlife preserve). Worcester is about a 30 minute drive. Lot's of lakes all around with good fishing. The town of Barre has some excellent restaurants, a grocery store, hardware store, etc. This is an organic farm so you must use biodegradable products in you use my dump station. Anne and Brett's site is the perfect spot to be off the beaten path but still close enough to the main drag. There were two of us and our two labs, they loved the giant field! We grabbed breakfast sandwiches at Mimis down the road before exploring the beautiful and quiet Quabbin Reservoir. We had full cell service too(Verizon.) Their camp offers solitude(except for a surprise visit from their beautiful pups!) you look for in a camp, all you can hear is bird song and the occasional horse whinny. Down the road is a bakery, pizza house, package store and Cumberland Farms. The owners were very quick to respond to our messages and said to let them know if there was anything we needed. The site itself is very clean with fire ring, firewood, picnic table and a very spacious. Book it today, you won't regret it, we will be back!

What a wonderful little spot! Tucked away above a field you have an amazing view with the mountains and a space all to yourself. It’s quiet and secluded for those looking for some calm or privacy. The land hosts are great communicators and really offer something special here. The site is simple, spacious and clean. Definitely don’t overlook this site, I’ll surely be coming back!

We had a great time camping here. The site is private and there was plenty of space for our two four-person tents. The bathroom was close by, clean and lighted at night. Our visit was the first week of April, first guests of the season, so a couple of quirks can be chalked up to that – water had to be turned on, a bit of mud on the walk to the water spigot, and firewood was damp. Willis provided all the wood no extra charge, he mentioned the standing water is a feature of spring and he responded quickly to our text about turning on the water.
