Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

This 1968 Shasta Camper, located in a small garden within an urban neighborhood, sleeps up to four people, with additional space to set up tents if desired. It has a few amenities—some more rustic than others—including AC, refrigerator and freezer, stovetop (oven does not work), sinks, shower, internet, and coffee maker.
Located just ten minutes from the Port of Long Beach and the Port of San Pedro, it’s a great launch point for cruise-goers. With swimming beaches only twenty minutes away, it’s an ideal option for a low-cost vacation.
Help yourself to the freshest fruits, vegetables, and legumes from the garden, and watch the bees, butterflies, and grasshoppers happily pollinate, creating opportunities for new growth.
The property is securely locked, and the entrance is video-monitored for your safety (and ours).
It’s important to note that the camper (not a glamper) is vintage, and the convenience of the urban neighborhood can sometimes come with a variety of neighborhood sounds—though it can also be extremely quiet at times.
Due to the desert climate, ants may accompany the pollinators and enter the camper if food or beverages are left out. The garden is shared with our home, so some privacy may be compromised when we tend to it.
Street parking only. Pay attention to posted restriction signs and do not park in business or residential lots. The driveway can be made available at a cost of $10 per night (keep in mind the driveway is located at the front of the property and is a short walk away from the entrance to the camper).
Yard is fenced-in completely but if your pet is an escape artist there are some very small openings to be aware of when letting them off-leash.

Winsome’s Hipcamp is a hidden gem. The trailer was absolutely charming, inside was stocked with everything you need. AC, coffee, fully functional vintage refrigerator. Did I mention everything you need to make coffee in the morning? The place was super clean and accommodating. A safe haven for our pups-we got away from the city to escape the 4th of July fire works. The cherry on top was the pool! Perfect for beating the heat.

Enjoyed our stay here! Parking is accessible and just steps away from the actual site. The camper is super cozy and stocked basic essentials. The eucalyptus spray was clutch to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Weekend Trip to Tammy Reeves
Tammy is an excellent and thoughtful host. She upgraded my stay in response to the heat. She gave wonderful directions and she was very responsive. The teardrop and A Frame are SUPER CUTE. The whole site is very cute and relaxing and perfectly situated at the base of Copper Mountain. This is an excellent place for dark sky viewing. Stay with Tammy—you won’t regret it!

The space was a great place to crash for a night. Super cute animals and farm stand and the RV is set up well. We were unsuccessful at using the oven but were able to use the stove. The switches for the lights are a little hidden around the RV but super nice variety of lighting options.

Weekend Trip to Freedog Farms @ Cactus Flower Ranch
We just got back from Free Dog Farms and already can't stop talking about it. Sierra and Darin are the absolute best. They make you feel like you've known them for years within the first five minutes.
What we loved most is that they actually encourage your dogs to run off leash. Our dog was in full heaven mode the entire trip; running, exploring, living his best life. It's so hard to find places that are truly dog-friendly and not just tolerating your pet. Free Dog Farms is the opposite of that. They LOVE dogs there and it shows.
We were treated like family the whole time. No awkward "checkout is at 11" stuff. We're already talking about when we're going back. 10/10 would recommend to anyone!

It was a peaceful experience camping here! Easy to find. While it is basic, no electricity or running water, it manages to have a lot of conviences with the outhouse, solar shower, and shelves.

Weekend Trip to Dare 2 Dream Farms
Super cute and exactly as shown. Adorable farm with things like eggs, jams, and vegetables you can buy. The trailer is very comfy and cozy with a working stove (though it can only be to one heat), and it has a cool little shower outside. Biggest complaint is that the porta-potties are very gross, but that is true for most porta-potties.

We loved staying in the real teal camper! The bed in the camper was very comfortable and AC worked great. We had a nice fire in the fire pit and enjoyed the beautiful view. The site was well maintained and very clean. We would strongly recommend this host for your next trip to the Julian/Santa Ysabel area!

North Coast
Camping beneath redwoods—the tallest trees in the world—is a hard-to-beat highlight of the north coast. The majestic groves scattered across Redwood National & State Parks are an excellent choice for first-timers. Further south, from Eureka to Mendocino and eventually San Francisco, you’ll find a string of private and state park campgrounds tucked along rugged coastlines marked by bluffs, coves, dunes, and tidepools.
Central Coast
Stretching from Monterey south to Santa Barbara, the Central Coast scores points for scenery and variety. Plus, it’s a convenient escape from the urban hassles of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Redwoods, waterfalls, and windswept bluffs border Highway 1 in Big Sur, while waves crash beside state parks north of Santa Barbara. For a remote camping experience, campsites at Channel Islands National Park off the coast of Santa Barbara can oblige.
SoCal Beaches: Los Angeles to San Diego
The golden beaches of Southern California are the stuff of lazy days and pop songs. And fantastic camping for those inclined. The best campsites line-up beside the coast between Newport Beach and Dana Point in Orange County, with a few more perched on coastal bluffs north of San Diego. Not surprisingly, these oceanfront sites fill fast, so book early.
Sierra Nevada Mountains
Granite domes and lush Alpine meadows border campgrounds in Yosemite National Park, while enormous sequoias are the draw in Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks. Campgrounds beside alpine lakes and the sparkling blue waters of Lake Tahoe are always postcard-pretty.
Southern Deserts
For surreal sunsets, striking rock formations, restless sand dunes, and spring wildflowers, head east. Nine campgrounds and plenty more right outside await at Death Valley National Park, home to the lowest spot in the U.S. Joshua trees and picturesque boulders keep Hipcampers happy at Joshua Tree National Park while Anza-Borrego Desert State Park serves up fantastic desert hiking outside San Diego. High season is late fall through spring, when temperatures are pleasant.
