Yes, you can use a propane camp stove or cook at our common area bbq in front of the barn where we light a real wood fire for campers to socialize with us, other campers and visit our speakeasy. Yes, we provide propane for the propane fire pits. Yes, your dog can run off-leash. Yes, each site has a picnic table, umbrella, propane fire pit. Most sites have a hammock and hammock stand. Please pack your trash out there is a dumpster at the front gate entrance/exit for your trash. You can support our farm by buying eggs, hats, stickers, and other items, all for sale in the barn. Rumor has it our house was built by the famed western actor Alan Ladd as a secret getaway back in the 50s. There’s 5 acres, partly shaded by old mesquite trees and native Washingtonia palms that tower over rock lined paths. I recently fixed up our old 1949 tear drop camper for staying in after it had been abandoned for 30 years. It’s equipped with solar power, a gas burner, a pump sink, and a cooler. This is a place for people that love old stuff! No marble countertops and stainless steel will be found. For lovers of the funky. There’s an outhouse, an outdoor shower, and a 9 foot deep swimming pool too. We’re situated between the San Andreas fault and the the Little San Bernardino Mountains, so spectacular hikes are a short walk away. After every golden sunset, the stars do not disappoint.

This 1968 Shasta Camper, located in a small garden within an urban neighborhood, sleeps up to four people (only 2 people comfortably), with additional space to set up tents if desired. It has a few amenities—some more rustic than others—including AC, refrigerator and freezer, stovetop (oven does not work), sinks, shower, internet, and coffee maker. Located just ten minutes from the Port of Long Beach and the Port of San Pedro, it’s a great launch point for cruise-goers. With swimming beaches only twenty minutes away, it’s an ideal option for a low-cost vacation. Los Angeles is a 1.75 hour train ride making it a doable day trip. Help yourself to the seasonal fruits, vegetables, and legumes from the garden, and watch the bees, butterflies, and grasshoppers happily pollinate, creating opportunities for new growth. The property is securely locked, and the entrance is video-monitored for your safety (and ours). It’s important to note that the camper (not a glamper) is vintage, and the convenience of the urban neighborhood can sometimes come with a variety of neighborhood sounds—though it can also be extremely quiet at times. Due to the desert climate, ants may accompany the pollinators and enter the camper, especially if food or beverages are left out. The garden is shared with our home, so some privacy may be compromised when we tend to it. Street parking only. Pay attention to posted restriction signs and do not park in business or residential lots. The driveway can be made available at a cost of $10 per night (keep in mind the driveway is located at the front of the property and is a short walk away from the entrance to the camper). Yard is fenced-in completely but if your pet is an escape artist there are some very small openings to be aware of when letting them off-leash.

Super cute trailer and secluded location. Keep in mind the guest prior to you is asked to tidy up before leaving. Not always the case that they will do so but not the host fault. Overall everything was great and we really enjoying our overnight, sunrise was amazing!

Weekend Trip to Lucy Under the Stars VintageTrailer

We could not have had a better stay at Winsome's adorable trailer. She was incredibly communicative; giving us specific heads-ups to navigate the back country roads and her property. The property is quiet, private, and secure. Inside the trailer no detail is overlooked: motion lights, modular cabinetry, MCM decor, local coffee and tea, spare bedding and towels, recommendations for local sites and bites, even books on local architecture and history. Winsome checked in with us regularly to assess our comfort amidst the very unusual weather as well as to provide personal suggestions for the annual art tour happening at the time. While the weather prevented use of the fire pit and pool, the area is dim and secluded enough for evening stargazing and photography. Lastly, once she was sure we wanted to engage, Winsome's three sweet dogs provided endless entertainment and affection, making us feel right at home despite missing our own pets. Winsome clearly takes hosting seriously and with heart. She engaged with us at an incredibly appropriate level; we felt secure and safe with her looking out for us, she was immediately responsive to messages, but also gave us as much privacy and time to ourselves as we wished. We were sad to leave! I am not one for the desert but Winsome might convert me!

Weekend Trip to Kernville Ranch

Wonderful stay at the Spartan on Kernville Ranch. Beautifully preserved 1950's time capsule with plenty of room for 3 of us and a bathroom with running water. We loved noticing the design details in the trailer, sitting on the deck, walking down to meet the horses, and using the wooden hot tub (the bravest among us did a cold plunge in the creek). Great food options within a short walk, and appreciated all the helpful notes. Thanks for an amazing stay!

The place was just what you pay for. I like how quite and chill it is around there. My only feedback will be how clean it was. There were napkins and wipes under the bed, most of the blinds don't work. And there is 1 window panel that is bearly on there. It comes off really easy

Weekend Trip to Freedog Farms @ Cactus Flower Ranch

Free Dog Farms was a great place to stay. The owners were very friendly and made us feel welcome. The location is close to hiking and the beach and a great stop if you are driving up or down the coast. We stayed in the green and white vintage trailer. It was super cute and cozy. The mattress was a little thin for me, but I'm picky about mattresses so I bring a travel mattress topper, which made it ok. Be aware that there is no water in the camping areas (except non potable water to wash your hands by the port potties). This is not a huge deal if you are used to dry camping, but definitely read the camping info so you are prepared. The owners let us refill our water bottles from the water by the barn since we used up more than we expected hiking! We would stay here again.

Winsome was a gracious host. We happened to see her when we arrived, and she gave us recommendations on where to buy groceries and eat dinner. The trailer was thoughtfully prepared. It was big enough to accommodate a family of 3. The pool was a big bonus too. The location was nice and quiet. We would recommend this place!

Winsome’s place and set up is absolutely beautiful. Everything has a place and a purpose: it’s minimalist, relaxing and vintage which I loved. Everything is perfectly placed so that you always have shade somewhere at all times of day. There was local coffee you can grind yourself and either a French press or a pour over, as well the option for farm fresh eggs and home baked bread. The check-in and check-out process was very smooth, thanks to Winsome’s excellent and timely communication. I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay here again. Weekend Trip to The Sunrise Sanctuary

Definitely recommend this site for a “home away from home” feel. The trailer was immaculate inside and has enough supplies for food and coffee that even if you forget or leave your gear you’ll have what you need. You’re close enough to a goods store that you can be there and back within 25 minutes. Host was very kind and accommodating. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice stay but needing or wanting some of their creature comforts.

Where to go

North Coast

Camping beneath redwoods—the tallest trees in the world—is a hard-to-beat highlight of the north coast. The majestic groves scattered across Redwood National & State Parks are an excellent choice for first-timers. Further south, from Eureka to Mendocino and eventually San Francisco, you’ll find a string of private and state park campgrounds tucked along rugged coastlines marked by bluffs, coves, dunes, and tidepools.

Central Coast

Stretching from Monterey south to Santa Barbara, the Central Coast scores points for scenery and variety. Plus, it’s a convenient escape from the urban hassles of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Redwoods, waterfalls, and windswept bluffs border Highway 1 in Big Sur, while waves crash beside state parks north of Santa Barbara. For a remote camping experience, campsites at Channel Islands National Park off the coast of Santa Barbara can oblige.

SoCal Beaches: Los Angeles to San Diego

The golden beaches of Southern California are the stuff of lazy days and pop songs. And fantastic camping for those inclined. The best campsites line-up beside the coast between Newport Beach and Dana Point in Orange County, with a few more perched on coastal bluffs north of San Diego. Not surprisingly, these oceanfront sites fill fast, so book early.

Sierra Nevada Mountains

Granite domes and lush Alpine meadows border campgrounds in Yosemite National Park, while enormous sequoias are the draw in Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks. Campgrounds beside alpine lakes and the sparkling blue waters of Lake Tahoe are always postcard-pretty.

Southern Deserts

For surreal sunsets, striking rock formations, restless sand dunes, and spring wildflowers, head east. Nine campgrounds and plenty more right outside await at Death Valley National Park, home to the lowest spot in the U.S. Joshua trees and picturesque boulders keep Hipcampers happy at Joshua Tree National Park while Anza-Borrego Desert State Park serves up fantastic desert hiking outside San Diego. High season is late fall through spring, when temperatures are pleasant.
