Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

A great place to stay just outside of the park. Be near the park, but feel that complete privacy. These sites are very spaced out from each other and are large. No need to cram together! We have 824 acres on a beautiful cattle ranch with two small ponds. On our property, you'll find frogs, turtles, oak trees, pine trees and stunning views of Yosemite.
We have several campsites to choose from including RV camping, tent camping, and a glamping tent. Pets are welcome. Campfires are permitted as long as there is no fire ban. Potable water and toilet are available onsite.
There's a golf course less than a mile away. We are also very close to town. In just a few minutes, you can drive to our local grocery store and pizza parlour.
We are a 10-minute drive to Pine Mountain Lake. Beautiful Pine Mountain Lake offers golfing, dining, horseback riding, water sports and an airport.
When you come to the ranch it feels like you are hundreds of miles away from civilization, but still close to everything you need. It is incredibly peaceful!
This is a great place for someone who wants to escape city life and enjoy the tranquillity of nature.
Much of the ranch is open wilderness for you to explore, and it's not uncommon to see deer, frogs, turtles, quail, turkeys, or other countless species of birds.
Diamond Gulch Camp is the perfect place to relax if you’re a photographer, artist, family or a group of friends looking for a place to camp near Yosemite.
A small portion of the property was used as a gold mine years ago, and you may find remnants of old home sites if you go exploring. We're not far from Wards Ferry Road, Groveland, Lake Don Pedro and other interesting places.

Beautiful natural campsites in the Valley of the Moon (Ojai Valley). Our sites are within an eighth of a mile of walking, running, biking, and riding trails from Ojai to the beaches of Ventura. On many days you can experience Ojai’s famous pink moments. You can hike the trails above Ojai, boat, eat, or picnic at Lake Casitas. Travel to nearby Ventura to shop, fish the pier, or take a deep sea fishing charter or Island charter to Whale watch or fish around the Channel Islands.
Please note the aerial view of the camping area recently placed by Hipcamp is NOT AT ALL REPRESENTATIVE of the current camping sites and shows a photo that is many years old when the site was merely land.
That photo is without any of the existing amenities or improvements. The actual sites are all Larger than Federal Park and Statepark guidelines, with averages of 20'x30' for campsites and 20'x40' for a long RVCampsite.
We have planted many young trees and continue to plant trees and native shrubs around and near the sites. We have picnic tables, table coverings, fire pits, and camping rugs/footprints. There is also an outdoor shower, a shower tent with hot water, and an upgraded porta-potty with a sink.
Note: During times when high heat is predicted, we strongly recommend that our Hipcampers bring pop-up shade tents or canopies for their sites.
The Hipcamp is adjacent to our working ranch, and any photos of old sheds, trucks, a wood lot, or other equipment are NOT on the Hipcamp, but you will drive past that property to get to the separate Hipcamp area.
Wineries, Farmer's Markets, Craft Breweries, dispensaries, and more are within 10 to 15 minutes of our site. Our location allows moments when you may see Hawks, Owls, Geese, Swallows, Robins, Bluebirds, and more.
We offer both tent and RV camping.

Swimming in North Fork Tule River, miles of hiking trails on ranch. River Ridge Ranch goes from 1,000' elev. to 3,000' elevation. Hike right on the ranch. We are between Sequoia National Park (about an hour) and the Giant Sequoia National Monument (16 miles to groves up Hwy 190 and no entrance fee).

There are 33 giant sequoia groves in our Southern Region of the Giant Sequoia National Monument, some easily driven to, and some remote. Our ranch is a nature preserve and an education demonstration site, teaching sustainable and regenerative land use practices. River Ridge Institute, our non-profit, hosts a variety of events for the public.
Please note: you are expected to leave the ranch and kitchen area as you found it, i.e., dishes washed thoroughly and dried and put away, recycling separated from trash, food scraps in compost buckets, sticky marshmallow removed from forks and surfaces (ick!). Thank you.
Enjoy: The Kitchen has a 3-burner cooktop, large fridge, microwave, full dishes and utensils and pots and pans with a big washing area in the back. Propane barbecue grill.. There's a River Barn to use as a remote space and Turtle Cove for swimming. Saturday morning Farmer's Market in downtown at 9 AM - Noon.
Ancestral land of the Foothill Yokuts tribe. Homesteaded in 1859, owned by the Negus family from 1909-2000. Barbara and I bought it to save it from subdivision and it's now protected by a Conservation Easement and acts as a community center for the arts, music, poetry, gatherings and outdoor education. We're both biologists, so, just ask us.

With a total of only 6 campsites, it is a great location for a group to reserve the entire campground. All campsites have potable well water spigots and access to a cool water shower, sites 4-6 have electricity. Guests enjoy the privacy while swimming, stream exploring, hiking, spelunking, forest immersion, fishing for wild trout, gold panning, or simply relaxing in a breathtaking environment – come fall in love with this special private ranch. After one stay, you will be a repeat guest.
PLEASE NOTE: An All-Wheel Drive or 4-Wheel Drive vehicle is MANDATORY to access campsites 1 - 3, 5 & 6 due to the road incline and rock and gravel road surface. PLEASE PREPARE ACCORDINGLY! Campsite 4 is accessible with a 2-wd vehicle, and has potable well water and 20 amps of power. Sites have beautiful open views of the property and river canyon with natural shade in the morning and late afternoon. Sounds of the river will lull you to sleep. Although partially shaded, please plan to provide your own portable shade structure(s) during late morning and afternoon as the direct sun can be an inconvenience.
The Stranges are professional fish and wildlife biologists and have decided to share this special place for others to enjoy. The property hosts a diversity of plant and wildlife species that might be observed during your stay. Prehistoric and historic resources can be observed along the river corridor. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, bears, and mountain lions have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites.
The Ranch's northern portion of the property supports a leased farming operation. Farming operations should not interfere with camping activities.
Day trips are possible to Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, local caverns and wine tasting, and historic gold towns.

DISCLAIMER: This is quite different from staying in an ordinary hotel. We are really in NATURE here - these are older cottages hand-built by artists in the forest. They are very rustic! It's like living in a mountain village, with other cottages nearby. While we work very hard to keep our places pristine and spotless - if anyone in your group will faint if they see a bug or lizard or little frog inside - then this probably isn't the place for you. Please be very careful booking cottages for someone else - like your parents just arriving from another continent - they might prefer something more conventional.
Some folks describe our places as a luxurious form of camping. We make our cottages very comfortable - they have all the basics - electricity - wifi - most have kitchens, bath or shower and comfy clean beds. But they are not like a hotel with perfect walls and a sterile atmosphere. Please look at all the pictures and read all the reviews. We can't offer refunds just because we don't meet the standards of a normal hotel. Most people are charmed by this idyllic and bohemian lifestyle - but it's not for everyone.

We stayed at site 4, it was very spacious, there was a slight mistake & Terry's was so apologetic & gave us some fire wood. Such a beautiful spot, especially at night with all the stars and the sound of the river. 10 out of 10 would come back!

Gosh! Truly an amazing experience! It offers so many wonderful amenities, beautiful views, and an incredibly comfortable bed. The animals were absolutely adorable and added such a special touch to the stay. Nate is one of the best hosts. This place is a must-visit, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Strange Ranch is breathtaking!
The river’s flow is mesmerizing and the views astound. The river valley is steep sloped causing the rivers sound to carry up the valley. Watching the sunrise creep into the gouge is awe inspiring!
During our trip the weather brought rain into the valley, watching the birds taking refuge in the trees and hiss of rain brought tranquility and peace. This is just an awesome natural environment shared by the gracious nature of Terry and Whiskey
The valley has a long and rich history of gold prospecting and mining and the artifacts on site prove it
Terry shared with us some of that history and we appreciated it very much.
The sites are very nice
1 and 2 are literally above the river roughly 800 feet, 3 is about a thousand yards above the river, 4 is up the slope nearer the top and situated right on the top of the slope , 5 is above 4 and nestled into the trees , six is the highest up and a nice secluded site up a steep sloped
All in all Terry has gone to great lengths to make this a very good and well thought out place to camp. He is a gracious host and we had a fantastic time.

We had a great weekend at Diamond Gulch and the owner (John) was absolutely the best host. He definitely knows the history of the area and is a wealth of knowledge. The bathrooms and showers were clean, water crisp, and firewood plentiful. There was no road noise and the sky’s were dark at night. What a great location. It’s on our list to revisit.

Nathan was wonderful camp site was well stocked and had plenty of activities available. He was accommodating when the littles wanted to go in with the animals and even helped watch my dog while I showered. 10/10 will be back even pulled in with the save of myself forgetting towels. Truly a gem in the desert.

We enjoyed camping here for Memorial weekend, despite unseasonably cool weather with the marine layer evenings and mornings. Nancy met us at a nearby stop sign to make sure we found our way to her farmland and welcomed us warmly. We had the choice of two sand or a grass site and were able to grill our food on her BBQ since we brought our own propane tank (also required for the firepits at the two sand sites). We sat at the dining table under a shelter to eat since it was windy and chilly, but couldn't get the electric kettle to plug into its socket, although the fridge was working (albeit a little smelly). Our teenager enjoyed bonding with the horse and donkey, thanks to Nancy's suggestion to bring carrots to feed them. Definitely take up Nancy's suggestion to bring your own drinking water, as theirs is sulfurous smelling! We enjoyed having the flushable toilet and hand-washing sink in the semi open outhouse, but didn't try the shower as the weather was chilly. Good cell phone signal as you can see the towers on the hilltop, and lots of birds to watch. Close by to several nice dog-friendly hikes (e.g. San Juan de Anza), the San Juan mission and old town, Hollister (highly recommend Mad Pursuit brewery!) and Casa de Fruta.

This location is great for staying in park. You are out there in the heart of Kings Canyon, but have great amenities (flushable toilets, wifi, ice, wood, sun shades) and thankfully the old lodge station still has working gas pumps, which are especially helpful if you have a vehicle that has bad gas mileage. The staff running the ice cream stand were super friendly and helpful. We had some great stargazing and the campers around us were respectful of quiet hours.

My first car tent camping experience was amazing! 🏕️✨ It was the perfect getaway from home and work.
The campsite was quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by beautiful views. One of my favorite moments was soaking in the tub while enjoying the cold weather and watching the sunset. 🌅🛁 It was so relaxing.
The owner was very kind and helpful. He even helped us cook rice from his home. When the lights weren’t working, he provided us with a lantern and a small generator so we could charge our phones. His hospitality made our stay even more enjoyable.
The windy weather made camping a little challenging at times, but it also kept us cool during the day. We enjoyed grilling, spending time with friends, and making unforgettable memories together.
Overall, we had a wonderful experience and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing camping getaway.

Really enjoyed camping at the communal campground. There are bathroom and outdoor shower facilities that are kept clean. I did not meet the owners but talked briefly to the lady who opened the camp store and she was really nice. The terrain is huge and I spent a few hours on the trails, and also met up with the lovely goats, alpaca, horse and donkey. It's a perfect spot for decompressing from city or town life. Only issue I encountered was perhaps the signage to figure out which way to drive to the campground, so I was happy to arrive during the day, but other than that, I would definitely return to try out a different accommodation.

Weekend Trip to Wisdom eco-preserve
We had a great time at the Serenity Cabin. It was beautiful and secluded in the woods with everything we needed. We brought a cast iron pan with us to cook outside on the fire which I would recommend to anyone in the future! The bathroom was a short walk across the meadow. The mosquitos were around but once we lit a citronella candle and started a fire they did not bug us at all (haha). We enjoyed activities nearby Nevada City, Scotts Flat Reservoir, and the Yuba River at Edwards Crossing Bridge as well. Adam has created a beautiful property that is very lovely and relaxing.

This is my second time staying here, in a different cabin. The property is beautiful and Adam is really helpful if anything is needed. Good walking and hiking and close to swimming holes. There is an outhouse + a proper toilet attached to Adam’s house for campers to use.

Weekend Trip to Wisdom eco-preserve
We loved the Geronimo cabin! I went up with my friend and our children and we had a lovely and easy stay. I stayed in a different cabin over Mother’s Day weekend the year before and they upped their cleanliness. The bathrooms have clean towels to use. Decent walks on property with kids. Enjoyed the fire pit, and smelt some very good cooking on the grills from the cabin next door. I was a little nervous it would feel too crowded over Memorial Day weekend, but it was very comfortable.
