Hillside Hut stands alone at the top of a meadow a few miles inland of the Cornish coast. It’s a quiet spot for a couple or a solo traveller to tuck themselves away in the south west. From its hillside location on the edge of a rural hamlet, this dog-friendly hut offers valley views and everything you need to self cater. You can spend your days walking in the nearby countryside, driving to visit the beaches and fishing villages Cornwall is famous for – or simply gazing out at that view of treetops and fields.
The hut’s French doors open straight out onto the vista and there’s outdoor furniture, a fire pit and a hammock to tempt you to spend time outside. But when it’s time to get cosy, you can tuck yourself up indoors. There’s a comfy bed at one end of the hut and an ensuite shower room and loo at the other with a simple kitchenette, seating are and log burner in between. The wooden floor and colour scheme, all whitewashed walls with green highlights, is soothing and complements what’s outside.
If you’re enjoying the greenery, stay local and go for a walk or cycle in nearby Deerpark Wood or to the village of Duloe where there’s a stone circle and The Plough for a pub lunch. It’s only five miles to Looe with its sandy beach and harbour and the same distance to the fishing village of Polperro. The location of Hillside Hut also puts you in line to explore further afield in Cornwall; Bodmin Moor is within 10 miles, The Eden project less than 20.
Hillside Hut is in the small hamlet of Trefanny Hill, two miles from the village of Duloe. You can walk there along country lanes, tracks and footpaths. If you enjoy a long walk, there’s a good route that can take you all the way to Looe on the coast. Alternatively go north a couple of miles to land in Deerpark Wood where there are plenty of pathways and cycle tracks through the trees. On the coast the South West Coast Path gives you a well-signposted option in either direction from wherever you start out. Looe is the closest sandy beach which is good for swimming but closer still, on the west side of the River Looe, is Talland Bay (just under five miles), a shingle cove, which was a popular landing point for smugglers. The fishing village of Polperro is also only five miles away. Away from the beach, Porfell Wildlife Sanctuary is three miles from site and Adrenalin Quarry, where there’s an aqua park and zip wires among the exciting adventures, is 10 miles. It’s a similar distance to Bodmin Moor where there are waterfalls, walks and wild swimming among the scenery. The seaside town of Fowey and the Eden Project are both about 18 miles from the hut, just over half an hour’s drive away.
The Plough in Duloe is the closest pub and a good place for a meal out at lunch or dinner times – make sure to book ahead in the summer. If you’re headed for Deerpark Wood, you’ll find a good cafe there. Down at Talland Bay, the seasonal, Smuggler’s Rest, is a good spot for lunch with sea views. In Looe and Polperro (both five miles) there are plenty of options for fish and chips or dining out and there are shops for stocking up if you want to cook back at the hut too. For a supermarket you’ll need to head 11 miles to Liskeard or 13 miles to Bodmin – but both also have a good range of independent shops in their high streets too.
