A small and super-friendly rural campsite close to Yorkshire’s east coast

With just eight grassy pitches, Roe Deer Meadow sets itself apart from the big caravan sites that dominate parts of the Yorkshire east coast. It’s just over a mile from the golden sands of Cayton Bay, equidistant between Scarborough and Filey, and yet it is quiet, rural, and green. It offers camping for those with tents, campervans, and motorhomes in a small tree-lined meadow on a farm with views of the Yorkshire Wolds. This camping in countryside close to the coast offers the best of both worlds – plus it’s just five miles south of the North York Moors and half a mile from a very good pub.

With such a great location, it’s little surprise that, within a few weeks of opening, the farm was getting fantastic reviews. But it’s not just the setting that attracts thumbs up from visiting campers, the friendly welcome does that too. Hipcamp host, Philippa, makes sure campers are happy, helped by farmer friend Ray, his wife Christine, and their little dog. If you ask, they’ll give you tips on the local area and might even have time to show you some of the animals in the surrounding fields too.

The camping meadow itself is sheltered by hedgerows and stone walls with pitches well spaced in a row. All are orientated towards the Wolds and the setting sun. Two of the pitches are given over to glamping guests who can pitch up without bringing a thing thanks to the well-equipped bell tents on offer. For everyone else, there’s a choice of electric hook-up and off-grid pitches. Facilities are housed in a stone building which offers an indoor-outdoor setting for your ablutions. They are rustic but lovely – which is rather a nice way to describe the whole experience here at Roe Deer Meadow.

Roedeer Meadow
A Little Hidden Gem
This is a gorgeous little quirky site nestled behind a walled garden on a working farm. It’s peaceful, fully immersed in nature and within easy reach of the Yorkshire coastline. The field is spacious, and there’s proper lighting installed that illuminates the trees at night. We loved the quirky outside shower which is completely private, but a very cool feature of the campsite and definitely a memorable experience! There’s plenty of hot water and modern waterfall shower-heads. Adjacent in a separate room is a flushing toilet with a sink area, and further down the field are two composting toilets. Currently, there are two Glamping tents complete with small decking areas and fire pits. The rest of the field is open for camping, with proper mains electric hook ups. The 5m campervan limit is sensible, as access to the field is quite tight. If you love nature, this is definitely a site for you. Expect to hear plenty of birds, see a paddock of horses and hear the occasional farm animal. The meadow lives up to its name, as there’s a huge variety of trees including multiple fruit trees further down the field. It’s a real credit to the owners, and we must thank them for sharing this wonderful space with us. I wish them every success with this site in the future.

A lovely little spot
A peaceful little spot, close to Cayton Bay for some seaside fun. The shower room & toilet were clean & well thought through with the decor. Loved the plants in the shower!

Roedeer Camping 2
Lovely site
It was a lovely little site, double shower room was great for a full family wash. The hot water couldn’t manage a full campsite showering at once but it soon recharged. Toilets were clean two compost and one standard the little kids struggle with the height of the compost loo so great to have a standard one also. Kids loved watching the trains and playing in little area at the bottom of the field. Felt like we were in the middle of nowhere but super close to a large supermarket and the coast. Would be handy to have a small chest freezer so you can re-freeze cool box packs if you don’t have a hook up. Really nice site and really enjoyed our stay

Elderflower Bell Tent
Glamping at philippa's was a fantastic experience. I've never been one for camping but decided I'd like to try with the added luxuries found in the elderflower tent. I went with my partner and little girl and it was something I would do again. The site is a field on a working farm but very quiet if you discount the trains running every hour and the birds early in the morning. This does not detract from the stay..... we found it just added to the experience. The toilet we used was very clean and the showers are amazing!! Definitely a place I would recommend.

From the host
A working beef and arable farm with an enclosed walled meadow with apple and plum trees and wooded copse at the east end with roe deer and a carpet of snowdrops overlooking open fields with views to the Yorkshire wolds. The farm is over 200 acres and the area which is for camping is around an acre with nothing but stone walls hedges and trees around and beautiful views of the yorkshire wolds. Cayton Bay beach is 2 miles away great for surfing and beach days
Nearby attractions

Roe Deer Meadow is about two miles from the closest beach at Cayton Bay. This sweep of golden sand is great for surfing and home to Scarborough Surf School, said to be the longest-running surf school on the east coast. The even longer stretch of sand at Filey is about five miles from the campsite and, if you’re looking for kiss-me-quick fun, Scarborough is also about the same distance. The site looks towards the Yorkshire Wolds and you can join the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail at Filey to head inland for countryside walks. The North York Moors National Park is also just a few miles to the north for more walking, cycling and sightseeing opportunities. For young kids, Playdale Farm Park (four miles) is fun while the North Yorkshire Water Park (six miles) is a good option for older kids and teenagers.

Food and drink

You can walk from Roe Deer Meadow into Cayton Village in about 15 minutes where there are two pubs, The Star Inn and The Farrier. The Star Inn offers a great-value menu of pub grub while The Farrier has an AA Rosette menu. The village is also home to a couple of well-stocked convenience stores if you need supplies to cook for yourself back on site.
