In the very heart of the Lake District, this pretty village with a nearby lake of the same name, is surrounded by scores of high peaks. It’s where Wordsworth made his home and is now one of the most popular destinations in this much-loved landscape. Unsurprisingly there are lots of great camping and glamping sites in and around Grasmere and we’ve sought out the best of them for this collection…
For camping and glamping in the Lake District, there are few better destinations than Grasmere. Hikers, bikers, wild swimmers and all-round explorers will love the village that inspired Wordsworth to move to this stunning region of Cumbria. It’s positioned in the heart of the national park, with England’s largest lake Windermere to the south and the country’s highest mountains to the north and east. You can stroll around the lake at Grasmere or pull on the hiking boots and head for the hills with high fells all around. The village itself is quintessentially Cumbrian and is a great base to fuel up, pick up supplies or stop off on days out walking. All this makes it a great base for camping and glamping in the Lake District and we’ve found some excellent sites in and around the area. Pitch up your tent or park up your camper in view of the fells and you’ll have a handy base camp from which to explore. Or if Lakeland’s reputation as a rain magnet puts you off pitching a tent, how about letting someone else do the hard work for you? Lakes, fells, tearooms and pubs… Grasmere offers all the elements for a great holiday in the Lake District. There are countless routes in to the fells surrounding Grasmere so if you’re here for walking, pick up an OS Map of the area and take your pick! Helm Crag, better known as the Lion and Lamb, is a popular peak to conquer and is achievable for most, offering great views of Windermere and the surrounds from its 1,000ft summit. Wild swimmers or those who fancy a gentle paddle or row can head for the lake’s shore, just south of the village. For more water-based adventure head south to the nearby Windermere or Coniston Water – all fuelled by Grasmere’s famous gingerbread which you can pick up from the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop next to the church.
Sites associated with Wordsworth make up the majority of the tourist attractions in Grasmere. There’s his beloved former home Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum just by the lake for starters. Other former homes at Allan Bank and Rydal Mount are also open to visitors and you can visit his final resting place within the village church’s graveyard.
