A dog-friendly farm campsite on the northern edge of the Lake District

Check in is at the farmhouse, donkeys are in the fields surrounding the campsite, and the ablutions block is in an old stone barn. Howbeck Lodge in the Lake District is about as perfect as farm campsites come. It feels as old as the fells around it and yet this traditional-style Cumbrian campsite is actually rather new. The family behind the place may have been farming here for four decades but it’s only in recent years that they’ve started inviting campers to share the space with their cows and sheep.

Perched just inside the northern border of the Lake District National Park, Howbeck Lodge welcomes campers with tents, campervans, motorhomes, and caravans. It has eight fully-serviced, hardstanding pitches for those with wheels and plenty of space for those without. Tent campers are as welcome as the handful of caravans and motorhomes, with one grassy serviced pitch and space for up to 20 to pitch off grid in a separate field. And there’s an unfurnished bell tent available to hire here too. There are facilities dedicated to each of these areas: flushing toilets, hot water showers, and a washing-up sink. There’s a little pantry where you can pick up a pint of milk or half a dozen eggs but, for more than that, head to the village.

The farm is on the edge of Hesket Newmarket, where a shop and a pub complete this country camping experience that feels worthy of a place in a storybook. Both are just a short walk from your pitch. Further afield, there’s all of the Lake District to explore. From this location, High Pike and Carrock Fell beckon serious walkers and fell runners, with Blencathra and Skiddaw not far away either. Ullswater and Bassenthwaite are the closest lakes but you can explore beyond the lakes too. The Solway Coast, Carlisle, and Hadrian’s Wall are all within 20 miles.

Tent Pitches
Not what we expected
Overall the setting was nice, but for those camping with a tent it felt disorganised. Driving onto the site, there was no guidance including where to camp, and we ended up asking someone we met on site where to go and what to do. There also weren't a lot amenities, including places to wash your pots and pans. Perks of the site included free wifi, but no password was available. The farm setting is what attracted us to the site, however, there were some concerns about the animals, with x2 Shetland ponies being kept in a tiny paddock, with no grass and no shelter whilst we had heavy rain, clearly agitated, for the 3 nights minimum that we were there. We also had a family camp next to us which played loud music until 2am for two nights in a row. This wasn’t the kind of camp site we were expecting given the information on the website, and putting more in place to prevent this kind of behaviour would make the campsite more family friendly.

Touring Hardstanding Pitch 8
Lovely camp site, nice clean and regularly inspected & cleaned toilets and showers. Also a nice washing up hut with washing up liquid. The friendly donkeys and alpacas behind our pitch was also good to see and kept the boy amused. The whole site was quiet in the evenings. The hard standing was in good condition and only a 5 minute walk to the pub up the road which serves decent food. Couldn't ask for more!

Christine and family welcome you to Howbeck Lodge with its Touring Caravan and camping site. Howbeck Lodge is a friendly family run site on our working farm. Situated in the Northern Lakes with easy access to the Lake District National Park, Solway Coast, Hadrians Wall & southern Scotland. The site sits just outside the quaint village of Hesket Newmarket, with its well known pub ’The Old Crown’ with its own brewery, village shop & post office. All caravan pitches are fully serviced (direct hook-up to electricity, clean drinking water tap/Fawcett and wastewater drainage), hardstanding, with the exception of 1 fully serviced grass caravan pitch with a short walk to the shower & toilet block. There is also a dish-washing cabin on site and a chemical waste disposal unit. Easily accessible, just 10 miles from M6 J41 (Penrith North).
Nearby attractions

Howbeck Lodge is in the village of Hesket Newmarket in the northern part of the Lake District National Park. You can walk straight from site into the surrounding fells or head further afield to tackle some of the better known peaks and fells. For a more relaxing way to see the scenery, how about heading to Pooley Bridge on the edge of Ullswater where you can hop aboard a paddlesteamer for a ride across the water? There’s also great cycling too. Penrith and Carlisle are both within 20 miles of site as is the Solway Coast which is great for birdwatching.

Food and drink

You can walk from Howbeck Lodge to The Old Crown in Hesket Newmarket in about five minutes. This community-owned pub is recommended for food as is the one in the neighbouring village of Caldbeck, The Oddfellows Arms, which is about two miles away. There are small grocery shops in both villages if you want to pick up supplies for camping and Penrith (14 miles) has a range of independent shops and supermarkets too if you need more.
