Cool camping on an Isle of Wight farm – with an indoor skatepark next door

You don’t need to own a skateboard to pitch a tent at Camp Corve – but if you’ve got one, you’ll want to bring it. The small dog-friendly campsite here is one of a number of linked enterprises that are breathing new life into an old farm in the Isle of Wight’s quiet south west. Another is a 4,000-square foot skatepark housed in a renovated barn. But whether it’s skateboarding, scenery, surf or something else that you’re here for, this sheltered, tree-lined, tents-only site is a fun place to pitch a tent.

Situated just outside the hamlet of Chale Green, a couple of miles from the sea, Camp Corve is a rural hideaway that you’ll find at the end of ever-narrowing country lanes. The countryside rolls down towards the island’s south coast from here and there are distant sea views from parts of the farm. There are just seven pitches for tents sharing a wooded glade and facilities with one large bell tent that’s available to hire. It’s a simple set up with simple facilities in a brick-built block housing toilets and showers. Campfires are allowed in two designated fire pits in the sociable ‘Ash Circle’ where there’s an open-air washing up sink too.

The site is the work of the Fleming family who not only care for campers but also provide skateboarding lessons. Anyone can enjoy camping here, but those who will like it most will embrace the opportunity to use the skatepark, whether they need a lesson or not. It’s as good for experienced skaters as it is for beginners and as fun for adults as it is for kids. Beyond camping and skating, there’s a whole island to explore and at 22 miles across and just 13 north to south, all of it is within reach. There’s great walking and cycling on the quiet country lanes and coastal path, great beaches in every direction and, according to some, more visitor attractions per square mile than anywhere else in the UK.

Nestled within a tranquil, wooded glade, our non-electric grass tent pitches offer a secluded escape for nature lovers. The soft, verdant ground provides a comfortable base for your tent, while the surrounding trees offer shade and a sense of privacy. Bordering an ancient woodland and rolling farmland, the pitch is a gateway to exploration and connection with the natural world. Wake to the sounds of birdsong, wander through the woods, and breathe in the fresh, clean air of the countryside. This is a place to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the rhythm of nature.

Tucked into a hillside in an area of outstanding natural beauty lies Camp Corve: a wooded glade within an old farmstead set in 6 acres. Here you can unwind, walk, cycle, skateboard, play, sit round a campfire or visit the amazing beaches close by to walk, swim or surf. Encircled by ancient woodland, looking out to vast skies and rolling countryside, you can gaze down to the sea, and breath in the wonderful air. This hidden gem is private and sheltered by young and mature trees, wild plants and grasses. Here, close to nature your children can play, perhaps learn to skateboard, while you relax and soak in the environment. Don’t think you will have to lose all your home comforts, because “Squirrels and Hedgehogs” is our loo and shower building made with care from recycled bricks from round the old farm. Power sockets are here for you. Accessible loo too. Inside our “Ash Circle” are two fire pits (logs available). With outdoor sink for washing up and a wood fired pizza oven for hire. Cars are parked in the farmyard area; we have a trolley/wheelbarrow you can use. Away from the woodland campsite to far right of the farm sits a 400sqm barn discretely housing an incredible world-class wooden skatepark (www.canopyskatepark.com). We are a family business quietly regenerating the farmyard buildings in recycled stone and brick for further accommodation. Please note: We don't have any shops within walking distance from our site. The closest shop is a 10/15min drive. We recommend bring food with you if you don't plan on leaving the site.
Nearby attractions

The obvious thing to do while you’re staying at Camp Corve is skate! The Fleming family’s Canopy Skatepark is a 30-second walk away from the camping pitches. You can book in for an open session if you’re an experienced skateboarder or join an instructor-led session if you want a bit (or a lot) of guidance. Sessions are available for kids and adults. The coast is just two miles south of site but here you’re atop the cliffs which makes for spectacular views and great walking on the Isle of Wight Coastal Path. For beaches, you have to go a little further. There’s a choice from the thrills and spills at seaside resort, Ventnor, (seven miles east) to the unspoilt surf-friendly sands of Compton Beach (eight miles west). The quiet country lanes and undulating terrain also make it a great place for cyclists to explore and there are plenty of tourist attractions around the island. The closest is Blackgang Chine, the oldest amusement park in the UK, less than three miles away.

Food and drink

This is a rural location and there’s not much in the near vicinity by way of food and drink. The closest pub, The Wight Mouse Inn, and a small shop (at the petrol station) are in Chale, two miles away. Perhaps try The Taverner’s Inn in Godshill (four miles away) or if you’re out for a walk to St Catherine’s Lighthouse on the coastal path call in to the Buddle Inn (five miles) for pub grub, a garden and great views. For more supplies for the campsite , there’s a small grocery store in Niton, a ten-minute drive away.
