A World Away Farm:Serenity + nature

14 sites · RVs, Tents40 acres · Elkwood, VA
The land was marched across by Civil War soldiers on ther way to Gettysburg. They were on their way from Brandy Station to cross the Rappahannock River at Kelly's Ford. Much later there were horses in the fields, a well and spring were hand dug, a pond created and slowly buildings were built and expanded, but no barns as it was not really farmed. This meant no chemicals have been used on the land for over 60 years and perhaps ever. The plan is to keep it organic, but do something with it. Ideas are welcome. Relic hunters have found confederate bullets, a belt buckle and an early 1900 Ford logo. Fresh eggs and seasonal vegetables maybe available. Indoor games, frisbees, and horseshoes as well as paper for fire starting in the bathhouse. Nearby Activities under 15 miles- April: Gnarley Hops and Barely Fest- craft beer festival May - October: Sundays Flying Circus stunt shows with Biplane rides offered August: Hot Air Balloon Fest September: Hop N Hop Block party- music and BBQ October: Culpeper Air Fest, free, 2 miles, stunts and precision flying, WWII planes, Harrier Jet and more. Day Trips: Washington DC by car, Amtrack or catch the VRE in Manassas, Oatfields Plantation; Skyline Drive; Monticello; Mt Vernon; Williamsburg; Frederick, MD, Harper's Ferry, WV Civil War Sites: Brandy Station and the Graffiti House, Wilderness, Chancellorsville, Cedar Mountain, Fredericksburg, Manassas, Ox Hill. Labyrinth, Trails and Solitude

11 sites · RVs, Tents116 acres · Orange , VA
116 acres of hills and dells. Miles of hiking trails marked and well maintained. A small pond and beautiful labyrinth. Over 50 acres of deep wilderness woods. General Lee and his troops once camped here. But they cleaned up pretty good, so all you can really see is the old spring and wagon road. This is a working herb and small fruit farm. We have been experimenting with all kinds of exotic herbs and trees. Some make it, many don't. We sell dried herb teas. In addition we have 5 different kinds of bamboo. We use the bamboo for so many things. In the 5 people per site we are considering adults, not children... bring a whole crew of kids (try to have enough supervision - if there is such a concept!) The kids have such a great time out here... it is amazing. They love the labyrinth! It seems like we made this place for the kids in ourselves and when actual kids see it they go wild. The last bunch were running and yelping with their picked flowers all round and round in the labyrinth for hours! Also, if you want peace and quiet - and we have children booked - we will put you out at one beautiful remote campsites away from all the kids running and singing.

Peace of Earth Farmstead

5 sites · Tents10 acres · Woodford, VA
Our farm is host to wild critters as well as our farm animals. There will always be someone to pet, feed or observe during your stay! Remnants of an old stone mill and 1920's vehicle are a 15-20 minute walk away from camp, right on a creek with a rock scramble and swimming hole! After a good rain, it's common to find old glass bottles, and more artifacts from days gone by. We started on this land in 2019 and have been steadily working to create a cooperative farmstead and nature school to share with our community as well as travelers and explorers. Our space is super kid friendly! Enjoy the animals, treehouse and trails :)

The best camping near Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park guide

Overview

About

Portions of four major Civil War battlefields call this National Military Park home. These verdant, rolling pastures and lush river valleys saw some of the bloodiest battles of the war. Signs point the way for self-guided tours among the battlefields.

During the summer, Park Rangers lead groups on hikes through several areas. See the spot where Gen. Stonewall Jackson received his fatal bullet wound from friendly fire in 1863. (Fellow Confederates who thought he was an enemy scout in the darkness.)

In the Battle of the Wilderness, both sides fought to a draw. Five generals died during the two-day battle. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant vowed to fight on to Richmond, even though he faced long odds in May of 1864. Make sure to check out any special events or re-enactments happening at any of the four battlefields.

Aside from walking trails and historic towns, these battlefields put you in the throes of some of the most intense fighting of the war. More than 15,000 Americans died here, with 85,000 men wounded. This relatively small area is the bloodiest ground in the United States in terms of casualties. The four battles occurred over a two-year period as Union commander tried again and again to reach the ultimate prize: Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy. These sites put the struggles of American into perspective.

Several campsites near this park offer a place for a base camp to explore these historic sites and attractions. Recreational activities along the Rappahannock River abound, while Fredericksburg is just a short way from Mount Vernon and Washington DC.
