Lee's favorite song and the inspiration behind our name is "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul and Mary. The camping options are flexible, ranging from prepared campsites along both Little and Deep creeks with composting outhouses nearby, to "Camper's Choice" options where you may hike in or drive in and create your own camping experience. Honah Lee Farms has over 140 acres of woods with open fields distributed throughout. We are bordered to the south by the Flat River, to the west by Deep Creek, and to the north by Little Creek. Most of our campsites are nestled in the trees along one of these bodies of water and all campers have access to the 10 foot waterfall area where Deep Creek runs into the Flat River.

Back to the basics, come and experience Tar River Life’s primitive camping on the Tar River.
Enjoy being on the river and listening to slow running sound of the Tar River. Bring your own tent or rent one of ours. You can drive your vehicle to all of our campsites.
The drive to camp is about 1/2 miles. Each site includes a fire pit, wood and trash bin. Cook your own meals or try and catch your own fish from the river. Campsites can be secluded or grouped.
Each site comes with a picnic table, 1 bundle of wood and trash can. Stay for a night or longer period of time, come and enjoy the outdoors with us. We have lots of walking trails, fishing access, wildlife, kayaking and tubing (must be purchased through us). 2WD vehicles are ok except during wet conditions.
There is also the Vollmer Farm, with seasonal produce a Full Coffee Shop with breakfast goodies and baked goods and not to mention their fabulous ice cream. They have goods from around NC including, eggs, honey, meats, beers, wine and more. There is a grocery store (Food Lion) about 15 minutes away. So you can stock up on supplies on your way to your next adventure.

We are just over an hour north of Durham, NC, two hours southwest of Richmond, VA, and 30 minutes east of Danville, VA. Our property is 204 acres of beautiful wilderness, in an international Dark Sky zone (you can see the milky way on a clear night), where you can usually hear nothing other than the calls of the animals.
The property is accessed via a half mile dirt and grass road that drops you off at the main camping area at the Old Tobacco Barn. From there you have access to a composting toilet and fire circle.
Roughly half the property was cleared and is open and overgrown with brush. The other half of the property is various types and stages of forest, from young to old.
We have 5 waterways that I have counted so far (it's a lot of land!), including 1.5 miles of Sandy Creek, which is more of a small river than a creek, beautiful swimmable natural springs, and a half acre pond (with beavers!). We have two kayaks that you can use on the pond, and you can bring tubes or kayaks and paddle down Sandy Creek all the way to Banister River a few miles downstream.
Camping is available throughout the property, although you will see several marked and prepped sites along the road or in the woods. This is rustic camping, meaning that you can drive up to some camping sites, but others are off the road and require a bit of trekking through brush, trails, or woods.
This area of the state is an international dark sky zone, and the views at night are glorious - the milky way is clearly visible, you can generally catch shooting stars with regularity on any clear night, and if you bring binoculars or a telescope, you have a clear view of most of the sky.
If you enjoy wild plants, foraging, bird watching, tracking, or generally getting out into a natural space, then you will enjoy the diversity of the wildlife and plant life on the property.
Animals that we have verified on the land include Deer (lots!), Racoons, Cayote, Turkey, Black Bear, Fox, and a large variety of birds and other critters that we haven't identified.
We have house sized boulders along Sandy Creek that you can climb on, and the creek itself is clean and swimmable. There is lots to explore throughout the property and, most of all, it's a wonderful place to rest and relax out in nature.
A few things to keep in mind:
* The road is a dirt road, meaning that it turns muddy after it rains. Please be mindful of this and park at the front and walk in if it is raining or has rained the day before you arrive. Also, if it looks like it will rain while you are on site, you may want to move your vehicle to the front of the property to make it easier to get out when you leave. Having said that, the road is good and any car can drive it without issue when it is dry.
* Smaller campers and trailers are welcome on the property as well, although we do not have a place to dump/empty your septic, so please take waste off site.
* We do not have showers or potable water on site, so you will need to pack water in with you. This is rustic camping.
* We do have a composting toilet - please drop a handful of wood shavings into the bucket when you are done. For folks who are comfortable doing so, please consider urinating outside rather than in the composting toilet. ;)

Welcome to this historic place! We're glad you chose to stay on our property. Take a walk back in time down the path and see the old corn crib and hog pen, where hogs once helped feed our family and many others. Just beyond, on the right, are the remains of an old cabin that once housed the farm workers who tended this land.
Farther along, you'll find a block barn that was used to store tobacco before it went to market. Nearby stands an old tobacco barn where our great-grandfather and his four children hung freshly picked tobacco while small fires below cured the leaves.
Continue down the main path until you reach a fork. Turn right and head to the lowlands, where you'll find a cool, rock-bottom creek perfect for wading. Explore upstream or downstream, and you may even discover a deep swimming hole for a refreshing dip.
Follow the trail up the hill into the hardwoods and pines, where you might spot interesting rock formations. Across the road from the front gate and house, a path winds through the plantation pines and opens into an old farm field. Years ago, these fields grew tobacco, corn, beans, and hay for cattle.
Continue through the field and into the woods, keeping an eye out for Native American artifacts, as this was once their home as well. Beyond the trees lies the Hyco River, our property boundary. You can follow the river to the bridge or enjoy fishing and swimming wherever you find a safe spot, always at your own risk.
At night, you may hear coyotes in the distance, and in the early morning, wild turkeys calling from their roosts.
Please be respectful of other guests enjoying the property. With 400 acres to explore, there's plenty of room to spread out and make memories. Keep campfires contained within a fire pit and extinguish them completely with water before leaving. The coals should be cool enough to touch safely, with no smoke or steam remaining. We hope you'll enjoy our property as much as we do and help us keep it beautiful by packing out all trash when you leave.

The site was breath taking, the amenities provided were everything and more! Everything was carefully thought out! It truly is a place to relax, unwind and enjoy homesteading life! My hubby and I celebrated our 25th anniversary there, and I would not have traded it for a different trip! It was what I needed in a time of mourning the loss of my father in February! Life is always noisy but this place has a way of quieting everything around you and really allowing us to it all in!

Weekend Trip to Kerr Lake Glamping at Holly Forest
We loved our stay so much! What a gem of a place. A few families brought our little city girls here for the weekend. I'm pretty sure they made memories to last a life time. The golf carts really elevated the experience of glamping and the littles absolutely loved them! They fed the cows, played pickleball/basketball and played for hours despite the heat.
Jim and Becky really dialed the whole experience in with all the little details. The pizza oven, the coffee/tea that are readily accessible any time of the day. The giant mist fan in the Gathering place came in clutch in 90 degree temps.
Each unit was a little dream escape from the hustle and bustle of life. The beds were incredibly comfortable. It was a hot weekend but we slept wonderfully with the help of the fans in each cabin.
The bathhouse is brand new and very clean but has a rustic vibe.
The Gathering Place was where our crew spent the most time. We prepared meals there, created art there, watched the Hurricanes play on our laptop and chatted for hours.

Perfect getaway spot! I felt like I had the entire property to myself. I had a beach access to the stream, a short walk to a private port-a-potty, and plenty of shade. I love the “natural” maintenance of the trails. The area around the “waterfall” is just magical, with lots of shade and places to sit for meditation. Mike was accessible if needed, but was respectful of my desire for solitude. I enjoyed not having cell service or wifi on a constant basis, but a short walk got me connected when needed. This place is sure to become a regular getaway spot for me.

Beautiful and peaceful, had a great time fishing in the creek and watching the fireflies at night! Saw more wildlife than people :) Spotty cell signal on Verizon but easy to work around. Will be coming back!

Wow. What a beautiful place. Jim and Becky were welcoming and gracious hosts. Becky met us upon arrival and gave us an overview of the extensive amenities. The "lodge" was lovely and a perfect sleeping temperature for us in late May without using any of the fans, etc. We enjoyed playing pickle ball for the first time on the camp's court and hanging out at the "gathering" afterwards. It would be a perfect place for families with children. Our only regret is that we only stayed one night during a long road trip - we would've loved to stay the full weekend. Thanks, Becky and Jim for sharing this place with us!

My husband and I had a great first camping experience at Tar River Life! The campgrounds were nice and clean and the area was pretty, full of trees and animal sounds. We enjoyed the sound of hooting owls at night while sitting at the fire pit and the view of the river was also relaxing. The host was nice and had wonderful communication throughout our visit. They also give 1 free bundle of fire wood for your stay and you can buy more right at the site, that was the best part for us! The site has no running water, or Wi-Fi and cell service is limited! Amenities include a picnic table, fire pit, personal porta-potty , trash bin and one bundle of wood! All in all we had a great time and are looking forward to coming back!

About
Water sports enthusiasts are in heaven at this 50,000-acre man-made reservoir lake. The SRA is actually seven access areas found on more than 800 miles of wooded shoreline. Kerr Lake straddles the North Carolina and Virginia border. It offers some of the best fishing in the eastern U.S., with bass, white perch, and catfish.
Each recreation area on the reservoir has one or more concrete boat-launching ramps. Boaters enjoy access to two private marinas. Sailors find conditions here ideal, thanks to prevailing winds and expansive bodies of water. Cool off at several swimming spots and picnic areas along the lake's shoreline. The walking trails here are easy and short family-friendly paths with lake views.
Five of the access areas offer hundreds of wooded tent and trailer campsites. Many of them are right on the water's edge. Both electric hookup and non-electrical sites are available. And groups looking for a great time have several private camping areas to choose from.
When to go
The ideal time to visit Kerr Lake State Recreation Area is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warm days perfect for water activities, though it's also the busiest season. Winters are quieter but can be chilly, so pack accordingly.
