We enjoyed our camping - the space was private and large with a tree swing for the kids. I did not have to worry about being the "loud family" since there were no other campsites nearby. Kayaks were available for use and the kids loved meeting and petting the pony. The hosts, Julie and Scott were awesome and readily available.

2 nights at The Secret Sanctuary Farm

James and Sola were very nice and welcoming! We stayed at Lokis lookout and enjoyed the serenity! Feeding the animals was a nice welcome to the property, and a great way to start off a quiet camping weekend. We found it super convenient that there was lots of camping equipment for cooking that was made available!

I went with my two young boys and we all loved it! We got rained on while we were enjoying Wilmington but the property owners helped us tremendously by letting us use some bedding. They were amazing to communicate with and so helpful! The property was beautiful and we wished we had more time to explore it. We will definitely be back!

1 night at Lindsay Grapes

I had such a wonderful overnight “glamping” in this precious little house! I had some time outside in the hammock and also enjoyed a fire in the pit (with all things needed provided) after dinner. Anything I may have needed during my stay was provided, so no worries on this trip! The only negative were the loud vehicles kinda racing from the 🛑 very close by, but that’s all.

Weekend Trip to Wander Inn Campers, Backpackers, RV

Our party of 3 loved staying at Lucian's place! The bed and hammock were comfortable, fans were strong, and the outdoor shower was hot. Lucian was very friendly and was on the porch to meet us at check-in time. There were many amenities provided including cookware and dishes, towels and blankets, coffee, and a few basic toiletries. The location was also awesome being only 30 minutes from the beach and 15 minutes from the Blueberry Festival in Burgaw. We'd love to stay here again next time we're back in the area!

We were living the dream last week at Canter Lakes Farm! The sun shade and bath house were the key amenities and letting the dog off the leash was a great perk. It was kayaking on the pond that put this location over the top! The hosts are so welcoming, too. Highly recommend.

The lake is beautiful and saw turtles, frogs and was a lovely walk around the entire lake. Unfortunately, I have dogs that scare easily and Scott’s dogs visit the camping area, so I did not stay. But the property was gorgeous and Scott was easy to communicate with and gave me fresh eggs when I arrived.

We loved our stay! We enjoyed watching the cows,horses graze in the field and the 2 donkeys calling out and chasing each other! The nights were quiet. The host are friendly and helpful. I would 100% recommend staying here!

What a lovely spot! We are so grateful to Trace & Sam for being such incredibly kind and welcoming hosts. We were given amazing recommendations for places to see around Rocky Point, and we really enjoyed hanging out with everyone. We felt very comfortable and safe in our room at the house, and would recommend this as a great place to chill and spend the night. We have been RV camping for 21 years now and we just had the most amazing experience. The hosts are the most kind and caring people we have ever worked with. The sites were full, but they made us feel like we were the only ones there. My kids (and wife) loved being able to pet the donkeys and goats whenever they wanted to. What an awesome place to camp. Amazing hosts! Lucian and Sam are friendly and inviting people. The room was also amazing! Comfy bed, cool hammock and the breeze is excellent! Their house is a very charming oasis hidden away from the hustle and bustle of town while still close enough to everything for convenience. If you’re an early riser you can witness the magnificent steam rolling in over the lakes, creek and cypress swamp while you sip your coffee at sunrise. Bring your paddle boards and cruise, or warm up with sunny yoga on your private dock. Kayak or John boats can explore the river bends from our property, or even make it out to the big wide cape fear. You can take the ferry from Southport to Bald Head island, ride golf carts and see the Bald Head Island Lighthouse and learn about saving turtles. Our little private campground is a hidden jewel in the making. Each campsite is private. We are not a parking lot like so many campgrounds are these days. We are still currently working on infrastructure but are willing to host campers that are self sufficient at a reduced rate for now. We do have a fun play ground, hiking trails, a steam we lovingly named Alligator Gore (to keep the little ones out of the mud). We are pet friendly. Each site has a fire ring or fire pit. We have a full bathroom available. We have a small camp store. We have group camp sites, pull through RV / Camper sites and a few glamping cabins. Located only 40 minutes from the NC coast and much more affordable and less crowded. We are still growing so we do not have a pool yet but will have one in the future. We do have a kids and youth program with weekly crafts and other activities. Picnic tables are available on some sites. Almost across the street is a wonderful boat ramp and fishing spot on the Cape Fear River. Canoe down to a sand bank about a mile down river and have a romantic picnic. A Celtic themed restaurant, the Mad Boar, is just a 10 minute drive if you are looking for a unique farm to table experience. And Duplin Winery is just 15 minutes away with tastings and tours. Located just 10 minutes from I-40 off US 41 we are easily found. A diamond in the rough.

The Secret Sanctuary Farm

The Secret Sanctuary Farm is a co/op located on a portion of Prince George Creek that has a double Oxbow or hairpin turns in the creek. This unique feature prevented loggers from logging the property. As a result, there are many huge old-growth trees on the property as well as a variety of fauna and flora. A truly unique blend of farmland. Including an assortment of friendly animals to interact with. Woodland, wetlands, and a deep spring fed fresh water creek that connects to the Cape Fear River. This is a working farm. Please do not Open any gates to the animals. The fruits and vegetables on the farm are for the members of the farm. Eggs from our chickens will be provided for you to use for breakfast. If you happen to choose a campsite with a kitchen. There is a coffee pot and all cooking utensils. There are four permanent 4 shelters on the property. Composting toilets. Showers are still in the works. All of the shelters have their own composting toilets. Small propane heaters are available for each shelter. The first 1gallon bottle off propane is free with your stay. it will last 5-7 hrs. each additional bottles will cast $6.00 per bottle. There is also solar, powered lights, usb charging stations, fans, and air coolers. each Conestego hut has a locking front door to keep your belongings safe Campfires, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. Kayaks, canoes and lifejackets are available. All the Wilmington beaches are within 30 minutes.

We carved our 43 acre horse farm out of wild swampy land in 2007 and finished the barndeminium in 2008. We started with Hipcamp 6 years ago & enjoy meeting new people. My husband is retired from the Air Force and works full time doing the chores. I retired May 2024 from being a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at Womack Army Medical Center. I have a side hobby making homemade jams, pickles and flavored goat cheese spreads. We love the peacefulness of where we live...although the weather chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, peacocks, goats and horses do get a little loud come feeding time. We have different sites, please read each description or message me before you book a stay. All the sites have an 8pm latest check in unless you've stayed with us before. With the cold snap we have been experiencing the RV water source will freeze up over night. Please message me before booking the RV. We are constantly looking for ways to upgrade or make our farm more fun to visit.

About

Jones Lake State Park is known for a peculiar geographical feature known as the Carolina bays. A Carolina bay is an oval-shaped depression, named for the sweet bay, loblolly bay and red bay trees that typically grow around them. Many smaller bays are found throughout the southeast, but there aren't many like Jones Lake, which is about 8,000 feet long. And here’s where it gets strange—the “lake” is only 8.7 feet deep!

You can splash around in the shallow bay just like you’re in an above-ground pool, only your surroundings will be much prettier. There are a few other lakes, like Jones and Salters, to check out in the area as well. Encircling the bays are tranquil forests with hiking trails and a few of the best picnic spots in the state. But we’ll leave it up to you to find them.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Jones Lake State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer months can be warm, making early morning or late afternoon visits more comfortable. Winters are generally quiet, offering a serene park experience, though some amenities may be limited.

Be aware of park hours, typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your activities accordingly.

Camp sites are pretty nice and very clean. Some of them are pretty small though but others are more spacious. Little shade to be found except for in the right places. Clean bathhouse with hot and cold water but no AC (ranger said they are about to update those facilities soon) Visitor center is really nice. Beach and grounds are clean and well maintained and the canoes and paddle boats are there for rent. Staff is very courteous and helpful and they offer different educational sessions as well. There are several covered tables/areas for parties and other events. Only con: beware the yellow biting flies!!!
