Private driveway in the woods leads up a hill to three fabulous, secluded, country-setting camping locations with incredible views. Hay fields in front of you with woods behind you, you'll have peace and quiet in total seclusion but are only 5 minutes from downtown historic Greenwich village with diners and shops and a CVS. (The “Stewarts” gas station and market has firewood bundles!) Camping locations have no amenities but are cleared with mowed grass and have fire-pits. Pitch tent or bring RV, you'll enjoy yourself and the wildlife around you. Site 1 and 2 are adjacent to woods, site 3 is a wide-open-field site (great RV site) with the best panoramic and sunset view. There is camp wood for fires in various spots on the property (40 acres) that campers are welcome to but you might want to bring some of your own as well. Also, the coded entrance gate will be open for your reservation date so no additional call is required. UPDATE...driveway regraded for easier access for all vehicles now. Can still be a little soft after a rain. Call or text me anytime if you need anything. Thanks, Tom 585-305-5759

Birch Star Farm in historic Charlton, NY

Our historic and peaceful property is yours to explore! You can swim in the pond, take casual strolls around the property, enjoy the campfire at night, bike for miles on scenic country roads, and use this site as a jumping off point to discover all the beer, wine, cheese, concerts, festivals, hiking, kayaking, restaurants, shopping and more that the greater Capital Region has to offer! According to a few sources we've consulted, the Mohican people (Eastern Algonquian family of tribes - not to be confused with the Mohawk, a distinctly different tribe) were the indigenous occupants of the land where our farm is now located. Historians note that the name Mohican is from the indigenous word meaning "water that flows in two directions." Most Mohicans were driven into western NY and Canada when the Revolutionary War broke out. Local history indicates that the first white occupants to build here were the Hawley Family, in 1790. Parts of the farmhouse date to this era. Outbuildings were added through the decades and centuries, and the land was used as a dairy farm, among other ventures, by previous owners. We purchased the property in 2021 in hopes of providing more space, nature and outdoor living for our two little ones. We have two fields dedicated to Christmas trees, as well as apple, pear and cherry trees, and we've had successful garlic harvests to share with neighbors, family, friends, and at local farmers' markets. We've also begun brewing our own beer and cider. If you have any planting or farming advice to share, please don't hesitate! Follow us on Instagram @birchstarfarm

Overview

About

The Battle of Saratoga marked the first time in history the British Army surrendered in battle. Luckily for Americans, it wasn't the last. It happened in October of 1777, just as the American Revolution was gaining momentum. This picturesque countryside saw the beginning of the end of British rule in North America.

After you check in at the visitor's center, climb 190 steps to the top of Saratoga Monument, the coolest spot in the park. Take in the murals on the walls as you get closer to the summit.

At the top, you get a true feel for the lay of the land on the battlefield. The green rolling hills show you where British Gen. John Burgoyne's troops marched, where they encamped, and where they surrendered. You might be able to see your own campsite from the top of monument, if you brought your binoculars.

Come back down to earth and see the beautifully restored Schuyler House. Guided tours last 45 minutes and run from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. The house gives you a glimpse into the Colonial life of American Gen. Philip Schuyler. The British burned his original house down then they retreated at the battle. He simply built a new one afterwards. That structure still stands today, and people in period costume show you what life was like in the late 1700s.

Saratoga has hiking and biking trails, too. Check out Victory Woods, a natural place that hides some of the remnants of the fort that used to stand here. The Wilkinson Trail runs 4.5 miles, so take an entire afternoon for that hike. The tour road offers a way to bike or drive.
