This old homestead belonged to my belated brother Steve, and after he passed unexpectedly, we decided to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for those interested in sharing a peaceful and modest property. The old barn is a work in progress to eventually become the base to accommodating more travelers and outdoor enthusiasts as finances permit. My son Logan, after having worked in the service industry bartending for 14 years and hosting 100+ global travelers via CouchSurfing out in San Diego, is well-versed in creating an inviting space, enjoying the merits of hard work through the hospitality industry. We look forward to meeting you and sharing/swapping stories around the campfire! Learn more about this land: Our property and profile are in constant change as we are in a stage of development, but we look to share our land with those seeking to enjoy a warm, welcome environment for those fellow wanderers, outdoor enthusiasts, vagabonds, and globetrotters. Logan is a well-traveled backpacker and together we share 5 1/2 acres here in a bustling little touristy town. We enjoy the company of those who endorse small footprint, sustainable practices and like to establish meaningful connections.  All we ask is that you respect the property, our neighbors, and make an effort to add one more new friend before you depart.

14. AN UNEXPECTED GREEN ISLAND

27mi from Glendalough State Park · 1 site · Tent · Wadena, MN
Green Island is an unexpected pine forest located actually inside a small town in northcentral Minnesota. The camping area is incredibly private and surrounds a small pond. It is primitive with minimal amenities beyond an outhouse and hand pump for water. Accessibility is only for tenting or truly tiny camper vehicles. The campground is a huge semi-shaded space for up to 20 tents, still, we prefer 1 or 2 at a time. However, larger group retreats are possible. We are serious environmentalists and we offer this opportunity just for true nature lovers as singles or couples, who totally take care of themselves, leave absolutely no trace, and are solid environmental stewards. In other words, its no place for a party. Separate from the campground there are: apple orchards, outdoor sculptures, wildlife, a meditation kuti, and perfect spaces for forest therapy. Yet almost unbelieveably, you can walk to a Pizza Hut or Walmart in 5 minutes. This is an excellent staging point for outdoors people en route to Itasca State Park, The Lost Fourty, and the state and national forests of the north.

The best camping in Glendalough State Park, MN guide

Overview

About

Leave behind all your grown-up worries and cares at Glendalough State Park, a Minnesota getaway used for recreation since the turn of the century. It was Valentine’s Summer Camp in 1903, then the Star Tribune owners bought it to serve as a resort and game farm for businessmen and politicians (Eisenhower, Nixon, & Mondale have all stayed in the lodge).

With canoe-in campsites, five lakes, two beaches, and tons of creeks that connect to the main Annie Battle Lake, you can really spend your whole day in a paddle boat here. Labeled a non-motorized heritage fishery, Annie provides a level of tranquility fishers only dream about. Plenty of wooden overlooks, fishing piers, and trail bridges make it easy to explore the waterways on foot at this park, which comes alive in late summer with the blush of prairie flowers. Close your eyes, feel the warm breezes, and pretend you’re back at summer camp.

Notable campgrounds

  • Yellow Medicine Campground – A serene spot for campers seeking a peaceful retreat amid the park's natural splendor.
  • Horse Campground – Perfect for equestrians looking to combine their love for riding with the great outdoors.
  • Backpack/Watercraft Campground – Ideal for adventurers who prefer a more secluded and primitive camping experience.

  • Keep an eye on cancellations, as last-minute openings can provide an unexpected opportunity to visit.
  • Explore nearby camping options if Glendalough is fully booked, ensuring you don't miss out on the area's beauty.

When to go
