Some campsites you drive up to. This one you earn and the lake is with you every step of the way. The Hilltop sits on 7.5 acres above Stalker Lake in Otter Tail County, offering something genuinely rare: a private hilltop campsite with panoramic lake views and direct access to a lakeside sandy area and dock below. The climb to the site is about 250 feet and steep, but the lake view opens up from the first step and only gets better as you go. There's a bench halfway up for good reason — stop, catch your breath, and take it in. By the time you reach the top, you'll understand why guests keep coming back. Below the hill, your lakeside area is set up for full days outside. A large, deep-sand terrace sits just above the water with Adirondack chairs, a picnic table, fire ring, and easy stair access down to the lake. The shoreline is riprap, but the lake bottom is firm sand — great for wading, swimming, and getting in and out of the canoe or paddle boards. It's the kind of spot where nobody moves for three hours and nobody apologizes for it. The lakeside area is shared with your hosts when we're around — friendly neighbors, not hoverers. The hilltop and lakeside area are separated by Stalker Lake Road, a low-traffic country road easy to cross on foot. Two fire rings — one at the hilltop, one at the lakeside area — mean the evening belongs to you wherever you want to spend it. Sunsets here are a nightly event, not just a backdrop. Inspiration Peak (15 min) for a scenic hike. Phelps Mill County Park and Maplewood State Park within 40 minutes. On the water: fish off the dock, launch at Stalker Lake public access (0.25 mi) or Long Lake (1 mi), rent a boat or pontoon through Enclave Marine or G3 Rentals, or ask us about the Otter Tail River float. Rent dock space from us as an addon. Battle Lake (10 min) for dining, groceries, and a lazy afternoon. Stalker Lake Golf Course & Bar is one mile away — walkable if you're feeling ambitious after the hill. Have kids 8 and older who can handle the climb. Bring a well-behaved dog who'll love having room to roam. This site probably isn't for you if: You need amenities steps from your tent, or the words "no running water" give you pause. No judgment, there are great campgrounds for that too.

This was a great cramp site very private up on a bluff in the woods with a beautiful view to the lake for sunset. Our house were very attentive and good people. I would highly recommend this site.

The Peak Sunset Campsite
I camped here with my husband and our two large dogs, and we had so much fun! At first, when I saw the steep hill mentioned on the page, I thought, “How steep could it really be? We’re in Minnesota!” Well… I’ve climbed many mountains before, and honestly, this hill is comparable to some mountain roads I’ve done—just MUCH shorter! But you still get that rewarding feeling when you reach the top. The view looking down from the hilltop is really cool. It’s hard to capture in pictures, but it’s definitely worth the climb! Lake water is super clean, and the beach is very well maintained. The campsite feels very private and is in such a quiet, peaceful area. The site is also surrounded by maple trees, and when you look up, you’re covered by all the beautiful leaves. It feels amazing! We somehow experienced almost every type of weather during our stay—peaceful and sunny with a nice breeze, then rain and wind, and eventually SUPER windy and cloudy. Luckily, the temperature didn’t fail us, so we still got to enjoy the water! Mindy was also very responsive whenever I reached out with questions. I would definitely recommend this campsite! The only thing I’d mention is that if you’re someone who really doesn’t like “exercise,” keep in mind that you will be climbing that hill every time you go between the campsite and the water. For us, that was part of the fun, but I know not everyone feels the same way! Overall, 10/10!! We had such a great time here and would absolutely recommend it.

The Peak Sunset Campsite
I took my girlfriend out here for her very first time tent camping and we left already wanting to go back. While the climb up to the campsite is tiring, the sunset view and the lively nature make it all worth it. We had a lot of fun swimming, cooking over the fire, and enjoying the beautiful nature of the area. We also really appreciate how helpful and kind Mindy and Derek were for our first ever time using HipCamp. Overall, this is an amazing, gem of a site for anyone who loves enjoying nature in an area with plenty to do. I totally recommend checking it out!

The site and view were great. The hike up to the site was very accurate to the description (short and steep) but we used the provided utility cart to make it a little bit easier. We picked a very windy weekend so we didn’t get a chance to enjoy the water and the site as much as we wanted, but we recommend it and would come back.

I stayed at the Peak in May 2025 and couldn’t think of a better place to close out my camping season. The site was even more beautiful with fall colors emerging. Mindy is attentive and helpful, and the farm eggs are amazing. Highly recommend this Hipcamp.

The spot was amazing. The hill was almost a deal breaker but we powered through. We had a dog who enjoyed swimming. Everything else was pretty good. Unfortunately we had to hike the hill every time we needed the bathroom

Beautiful secluded site with incredible sunsets over the lake. The hill up to the site is very steep (to corroborate others), but the hosts provide a cart that makes carrying gear manageable. Once you’re up, it’s worth it: quiet, shaded mornings, breezes off the lake that keep bugs away, and plenty of privacy. The ground isn’t perfectly level, but fine for a small tent. Host was communicative, and the port-o-potty was very clean. Overall, a great stay — I’ll be back soon.

I camped for one night at Mindy’s hilltop camp site. It was so beautiful and peaceful and a great experience. If I hadn’t been on a road trip and needing to get back on the road, I would have loved to have gotten out on the lake. I saw Mindy coming back from kayaking and she was nice. It’s a bit of a work out going up the hill but it’s a short hill and I could bring everything up in two trips, and the view was worth it!

Owners were very helpful and responsive, made it great experience for my 5yo son and I’s first camping trip together. The beach area was absolutely beautiful. Everything was as advertised. Nearby town of battle lake had everything we could ask for couldn’t recommend highly enough

Nice and secluded with beautiful views. This site catches the breeze off the lake so it helps keep the bugs down. Pack light because it's a cart in area and has a steep climb to the top but that's what makes this site unique. Mindy answered all of our questions and had good suggestions on where to get some breakfast. I would definitely go back again.

We had an amazing stay at the Peak campsite! Mindy truly thought of everything. The porta-potty was clean and even lit up at night, which was such a thoughtful touch. The beach was beautiful and well-equipped, and the campsite itself was secluded with the most perfect view of the lake. Mindy was also incredibly communicative and gave us great local recommendations. We had a fantastic time and can’t wait to come back! One thing to keep in mind is the climb to the site. My boyfriend and I are avid hikers, and even we found it a bit challenging with all our gear. Just something to consider when booking—but we still found it completely worth it!

The climb is challenging, so prepare your muscles for a good workout then sit back and enjoy the lake, the quiet, and relaxing view. Love this place and can’t wait to return.
