Watch the sunset into the world famous San Juan Islands. Our property is located on the scenic Chuckanut Drive. It is a 15 minute walk to Taylor United's Seafood Bar that has beer and wine. You will need boots just below the knee, or hiking shoes that will get wet. The Creek crossing is a little deeper this year. You will also be crossing a muddy area for about 20 yards, you will sink about 3 inches into the mud. The hike into the campsite takes 12 minutes. You need to contact me to check the tides, as to be able to get to the campsite. We need to hike in below a 5 foot tide. Starting October, the campsite closes for winter. Again , this campsite is Tide dependent. The first question to me should be, What is the latest we can hike in? I am not Moses, I can’t part the sea. Camp closed during winter October/ march

Homestead owner Ian Woofenden is an expert in renewable energy systems. He's lived off-grid at the homestead for 40-plus years, where he raised his large family and managed several small businesses. He now consults, sells, writes, and teaches about renewable energy in the U.S. and in Central America. If your idea of a great getaway is to help out and do physical work, just ask Ian. There's always something going on at the homestead, including garden and orchard work, trail building, wood cutting, construction, sawmilling, and more. Soon we will be getting our winter high tides, sometimes the high water almost kisses the deck. Can be exciting. Come stay in our cabin at the estuary on Turners Bay, where wildlife is abundant and easy to see. The Bamboo cabin is very private and has everything you need to just hang out. Saltgrass's location allows for many fun outdoor activities such as hiking at Anacortes Washington Park or Kukutali Preserve State Park crabbing, fishing, birding, bicycling and, the beach, my kids actually found a bottle with a message inside years ago. Alternatively, you could explore the many little shops in the towns of La Conner and Anacortes. There are multiple activities available, I would suggest calling ahead in order to book kayaking, rock climbing, whale watching, or a sailing charter. You could easily take a day trip to the San Juan Islands by taking a ferry ride out of Anacortes, walk on or book ahead if you are taking your car. Also, the Swinomish Casino and golf course are within two miles. While you're here you may meet our pup Turner, we also have two cats and several chickens. On the property are your hosts Jeri and Nancy, as well as our handyman Sean, Saltgrass boasts beautiful flowers, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and yes, the Bay. We try to live harmoniously with the land. We would love to share our space with you! . We thank you all for visiting our place and hope we meet your expectations. Not when they are busy building forts, roasting marshmallows and climbing up tree houses. The intention infused into all of our spaces is a Hygge* (pronounced hoo-gah) vibe. *Hygge is a calm, comfortable time with people you love. The absence of frustrations; often enjoyed with warm drinks, cozy blankets and candlelight or a fire.❤️ County Noise Statement: We love living in rural Whatcom County and we know land owners in our area love it too. In fact, their enthusiasm for the great outdoors is so high that sometimes they can generate sounds that will travel throughout the day. These are likely sounds you are not accustomed to hearing in a traditional neighborhood. Distant noises such as: -county shooting range located a few miles away -tractors -mowers & chainsaws -ATV vehicles -barking dogs -farm animals (goat, horses, crowing roosters) -wild animals (early morning bird song and owls at night) -children laughing -adult voices -train horn Evenings are generally very quiet and peaceful as night falls with the exception of holiday weekends as the enthusiasm for owning property in the country may ramp up ;) We tell you all this in order to be fully transparent about noise potential. If the potential for noise and the nearby shooting range will be a damper on your glamping experience, no worries! We totally get it! Our place is probably not the best fit. If you want to bring your kids to a place where they can build a fort, take a break from their screens and build family memories over a campfire, then you will love it here! Drive down this shaded two-track road through the forest, cross the bridge over Maple Creek, and emerge into a meadow surrounded by woods. A hand-crafted tiny house is on your right, and a camping area is ahead of you, where you may choose the spot you like for your tent or rig. To get there: In Maple Falls turn Left on Silver Lake Road. In 2 miles, turn right onto Independence Lane, then shortly after, at the T, turn right again onto Full Moon Way. After the second house on the left, keep going a short distance, following the Maple Creek Meadow signs, turning Left onto the good two-track road to the Meadow. It's about 800 feet, (passing a small building where water is available at a hydrant). The road crosses a bridge over the Creek, and leads into the clearing. You will see the tiny house on your right, with its woodshed, and, looking to the left, an accessory building (The Tool Shed), where the composting toilet is located, along with a place to hang your sun shower (provided). If you are renting the Tiny House, you my park directly behind it. There are two picnic tables which may be used for cooking, eating, and washing dishes. The open meadow has room for two or three tent and camper sites. Just upstream from the bridge is a beaver pond, the beavers often busy though seldom seen. There is a trail to the pond, which is a good place to view bird life and hear frogs sing. The vegetation includes many large Sitka Spruce, Red Cedar, and Bigleaf Maple trees with their common understory plants, which now include trilliums, bleeding heart, and the less-loved stinging nettles. Two miles north from my place, on Silver Lake Road, is Silver Lake Park, a lovely large County park that offers swimming, fishing, trails, and small boat rentals. Two miles to the south is the community of Maple Falls, with its own trail network as well as shopping for groceries, hardware, treats for your pet, local art, and as of this writing, a food truck. Maple Falls is the second to the last town heading east on Mount Baker Highway, which ends at Artist Point in the heart of the mountains. Many hiking trails are to be found in the area along the highway. Maple Falls Visitor Center is a good place to get info on the endless attractions available.

The *Purple Cottage* -- was found & salvaged (recycled!)-- moved onto the back of my property in 2012. This 16 X 12' place has been my studio in the past, but has offered overflow for friends & ; family. Nestled in the woods and ever-so-private, the cottage has a pull-out double futon, plus a small sleeping loft and can accommodate 1 -2 nicely (we will consider 3 if you have a small child, but it would be a tight fit!... There is a very small sleeping loft in the cottage.). There is a “en suite kitchen in the cottage that has a small fridge, microwave, and two burner stovetop cooking unit. The cottage offers privacy in a wooded garden setting. The bathhouse, with hot shower, vanity and; toilet --are all steps away (and covered) from the main cabin. The Purple Cottage sits on a shy wooded acre, with greenbelt buffers all around, maximizing the sense of privacy. our vintage Shasta Trailer across the driveway of the Purple Cottage is currently used as a music studio (and rarely as family/guest overflow), and I have my own small Artist Studio located also on the back of the property. Even with all the little enclave of buildings, The Purple Cottage retains a private feel all to itself, with reliable Wi-Fi available at the cottage. . It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. Private beach access is across the road and a 15 minute walk up the street, where you can beach comb & explore the shoreline out at our little point. The private deck off the side of the Purple Cottage offers views of the gardens & flora, and has a little gas barbecue. There is also a delightful hot tub on the deck, which is a wonderful feature. An outdoor kitchen on the edge of the woods allows a roomier “camp cooking” experience with Colman stove & cold running water (season permitting). We are located 6 miles from the picturesque town of Langley and equal distance from Freeland, on the south end of Whidbey. Our area is very *bike-able* and either direction will get you to town! Weekend Trip to Maple Creek Meadow

A truly lovely stay at the loveliest tiny cabin. It made the perfect writers retreat and home base for hiking for us. The care Karen has put into the details of the cabin and preparing for guests stay made us feel considered and comfortable, and the meadow offered such beautiful places to rest and be inspired. We also accidentally left our son’s stuffed animal and sleeping bag, and Karen was so kind to mail it to us right away. I can’t wait to go back!

Weekend Trip to Clear Light Valley Retreat

Such a a wonderful stay- the cabin is absolutely gorgeous, the land is beautiful- we brought our dog & he loved being able to explore off leash. We took the trail down to the creek & it was beautiful. The wood stove, the giant windows & Mountain View were out of this world. DeAnn, her son & her grand-dog Freckie are the kindest, warmest hosts. Just a lovely experience & we hope to return!

My stay at Squalicum Mountain Basecamp was sublime: just what I needed to unplug from the stresses of urban life. The host, Kari, is friendly and helpful. The goat herd is charming. A very quiet and peaceful retreat, surrounded by nature. 🌻🌲🐐 I highly recommend!

2 nights at A Place to Remember

We had a great time camping at Paul’s site. The Whale Hut cottage was adorable, super comfortable and a really fun alternative to tent camping for us. We came during dry dock, so ended up hiking in and enjoyed exploring the island slowly by foot. The campsite was private and peaceful, the community kitchen met our needs and was a fun way to meet a couple of other people. We really enjoyed our time on the island.

We’ve been here before, and figured this would be the best place to hang out for a late summer short trip. Very peaceful and relaxing. We truly love staying here, and appreciate the tender loving care that goes in to making this such an amazing and welcoming place.

Weekend Trip to Maple Creek Meadow

Karen's land felt very private and quiet. Two of us stayed there, one in the tiny home and one camped in a car. The tiny home has beautiful details and everything one might need. We didn't really miss having electricity with a car to charge our phones. We didn't use the small wood burning stove but it looks adorable. We drove up to Artist Point for a sunset and hiked to Lake Ann the next day, both a one hour drive from the property. Karen was very responsive to my questions. We truly enjoyed our stay there!

Kari was a wonderful host and helped me book a last minute stay at The Office. The space was small but perfect for a little weekend away. The goats and sheep were amazing and friendly. My partner and I weren’t the biggest fan of the composting toilet but otherwise it was a great stay!

3 nights at Whidbey Purple Cottage w/ Hot Tub

The Purple Cottage is located on a wooded lot with tall trees and native brush all around, there's an abundance of wildlife, deer, squirrels, birds hanging around as well. Sarah has woven her artwork all over the garden and placed plenty of comfy seating everywhere to sit, enjoy and meditate. All your senses come alive in this peaceful Pacific Northwest Oasis. You do have all the luxuries of a flush toilet, shower and even electricity. The hot tub was a huge bonus to top off the day.

I was one of those guests that keep changing my arrival time as things go sideways while traveling with a toddler from 1000s of miles away. Nancy kept in touch with us as we made the pilgramage to her fairytail of a location! The description and photos on her posting are what was there and my sister lives near by so we will be back! This was our third stay and the first time using the wood stove. It was super cozy in the rain and all the trees were bright green from the rain. We watched a storm roll in at sunset. Perfect romantic getaway!

The Hytte cabin at Valhalla was absolutely amazing - I stayed two nights with my small doggos and we could not have had a better time. Comfy bed, great deck, lovely well maintained trails, and the most beautiful scenery all around; it could not be more perfect. I cannot wait to go back!

Larrabee Campground

There is an active train track right near the campground. The train runs about 15 times a day and also throughout the night. Be prepared for the loud train whistles. I recommend bringing ear plugs in case you are a light sleeper.
