We are 15 minutes from the North Cascades National Park and an entrance to the Pacific Crest Trail.

We are a short 15 minute drive to the North Cascades National Park! During the winter (typically end of November/early December through April/May) part of Highway 20 and driving access to the park is closed. You are still able to get to our dome using Highway 20 as that part is open all year round, but you are unable to access the park. You are able to drive to the entrance, park and snow shoe in if you'd like.
The part of Highway 20 that is closed is on the west side at milepost 134 at the Ross Dam Trailhead and on the east side, at milepost 171 at the Silver Star Gate, near Mazama.
An alternative hiking destination for the winter months is the Rockport State Park which is only a 4 minute drive from the dome. You are able to purchase a day pass on your phone once you arrive.

A 46 acre off grid communitiy nestled
within an established food forest. A mile of trails, a creek/pond, established agroforestry plantings and multiple examples of tiny homes and natural buildings dot the landscape. All within the context of a mature and established forest. The camping sites are private and removed from the bustle of the farm.
History: the farm was started in 1997. Matt Van Boven (your host and the owner) started on raw land and built all of the infrastructure with the help of many interns over the years. Every edible plant that could be grown here has been trialed. No irrigation, fertilizer, or cultivation is used on the farm. Only the most resilient and adapted plants remain to this day. These include hundreds of nut and fruit trees as well as many perennial edibles. Much of the forest, itself has been managed with thousands of cedar trees planted among the existing vegetation.
Besides the plantings, all manner of natural buildings are represented. Cordwood and cob being a few of the methods explored. The farm has a collection of tiny homes that surround a core of utilitarian structures and provide housing to an eclectic bunch of forest folk.
The land is uniquely situated on the confluence of two major rivers (the Sauk and the Skagit). The creek is an old river channel that is now abandoned. A couple sit-on-top kayaks are available to use to explore. For the adventurous, a trail carries on from the creek to the river itself.
The trail system is a labor of love crafted over the last 20 years. Almost a mile of manicured trails weave their way around the plantings and forest. The trees are almost 100 years old with some very large specimens of both maple and cedar.
The farm is completely off grid and has been so since its inception. Working with limited means has been a theme in the design and development. Living in a more ecological way has been a major inspiration for us and we hope that you, as a guest, not only have an enjoyable stay but also leave inspired to change your life in a similar direction!

One of the biggest benefits of staying at Whirlywind was not having to pack, haul, set up, and tear down all of our own camping equipment. It allowed us to spend more time enjoying the beautiful river and surroundings and less time worrying about the work that comes with camping. (the camping rule “leave it better then you found it” was easy when it was all so clean and organized to begin with) Pathfinder’s Sanctuary sites lack nothing and our spot was exactly what we needed for a stress-free getaway.
We would absolutely recommend any of Jeremy’s sites to anyone who wants the fun of camping without all the hassle! Jeremy was extremely friendly, available and quick to answer any questions we had. We’ll definitely be back!

We stayed here for two nights near the end of our 2 week camping roadtrip around Washington. I enjoyed the privacy of the site and that there weren’t any other campsites nearby so my husband and I could chill out in nature undisturbed, When we arrived there was a cute little basket for us with bug spray, ear plugs, granola bars, and a trash bag.
There were pros and cons to the location. Only 45 minutes from Diablo Lake view point and great hiking which was the major sell for us, but not much for ways of a town nearby. Concrete did have a great one bar with a pool table, and a really yummy Indian restaurant but besides that we just hung at the campsite the entire time.

This is my first time camping at Reed’s property and it was really wonderful! The site is super private, which I love especially having a dog who doesn’t love being around a lot of people! It’s a great location to be able to spend the day at and also super close to so many great hikes and adventures around depending on what you’re looking for! One thing I really appreciated was as a solo female camper I felt super safe! I had a friend come and spend one night of my trip and Reed double checked with me to make sure that the extra vehicle he saw parked at the camp was with me, which just made me feel like someone was looking out for me knowing I was there by myself. It really meant a lot! I definitely look forward to going there again for future stays!

Probably one of the most glamorous camping experiences. It’s a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the campsite but well worth it and made easy with the supplied wagon. The misty Mountain View campsite was a beautiful setting, just one other campsite visible from our site but barely could hear them. Such a serene spot right on the river. Jeremy was super informative and responsive, he couldn’t have been a better host. The campsite was stocked with more than I could have prepared, they really thought of everything.

Great base camp for exploring the north cascades area. The site has more space than I anticipated. We had a six person and two person tent and plenty of space for another tent. The site is nestled into beautiful mossy woods. There is a space to set up your hammock. Port a potty was freshly cleaned. Noise from traffic at night was not a bother while wearing earplugs. A few mosquitos only at night - no bother when using bug spray.

The bathrooms were great and the shower was like a spa experience, very thought out design! The path to the sites were well marked and had lighting along the path. Absolutely incredible location!!! Right next to the Skagit River on a rock and sandy beach. The queen mattress in the large tent is very comfortable. The host has thought of everything: propane fire ring, lots of cooking supplies, and lots of ice in the cooler. It is about a 5 to 10 minute journey from the parking area, but we did not mind. We had the whole place to ourselves. Very private and romantic. After dark, the stars were amazing. Hot outdoor shower next to the parking area was also nice.

Awesome camp site right next to the river. Very short walk from parking area to camp site with wagons provided to help move your stuff! The site itself is smaller but isolated from other campers. You can still squeeze in a large tent with room left over for a table and chairs. River view from camping spot is tough to beat. Would highly recommend site 14

Easy to find, close to the west entrance of north cascades. Easy to walk to with the provided wagons! Jim also dropped off a table for us which was a huge help. No potable water.

If I could give this site 10 out of 5 I would. Everything you need to have a great time. Cookware, dishes, everything. The only things I found helpful to bring was a bucket to collect dirty dishes, gloves to wash them, and paper towels.

About
Just 2 hours outside of Seattle, tucked away in the North Cascades National Park lies a rare sight, Diablo Lake. Made famous by its stunningly vibrant and clouded turquoise water, Diablo lake gets its unique look from fine rock powder found in the glacial melt. World-class hiking trails and pristine camping aren't the only draws to this natural wonder. The Diablo Dam was once the largest in the world and at 389 ft tall it is a stunning sight to behold. Walk across the dam to get the perfect view of the valley below or take off on one of the many hiking trails to marvel at the scale of the project from its base.
When to go
The ideal time to visit Diablo Lake is during the summer and early fall, when the weather is most favorable and the North Cascades are fully accessible. Winter and spring may present challenges with snow and road closures, making some areas difficult to reach.
