Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Camp sites also have fire rings with wood available for you to use. Campers are welcome to use any wood that's on the ground near or around your site. Camp sites can be accessed with a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle or walk up the hill to your site. With easy access down to the river, by walking or driving, you can cool off in the beautiful Cow Pasture River. Glamping in the Vardo Wagon is another option, with its close proximity to the river and cozy interior. The Gypsy Rose sleeps 2, but can sleep 2 additional guests with a tent. Paddle boards and kayaks are available for free if you paddling near the farm. The site is peaceful, remote, and surrounded by native plants and wildlife. This is a primitive campsite — there’s no running water, buildings, or electricity. It’s best suited for campers comfortable with a backcountry setup who want quiet, privacy, and natural beauty. 4WD Access Required: The campsite is located at the top of a mountain. You’ll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to access it. Though we are happy to arrange a shuttle for your gear with advance notice. Water: There is a year-round creek nearby with non-potable water. Perfect for rinsing off or washing dishes. Bring your own drinking water or a filter. 6 gallons of water will be left at the campsite to put out the fire or wash your hands. Firewood Provided: We supply firewood for each stay. Bring your own firestarter or lighter. ⚠️Please don't bring in firewood, it can introduce pest and pathogens harmful to the forest. Trash Drop-Off: Please pack out your trash. A drop-off point is available at the base of the mountain near the exit. Two friend of mine and I stayed at Wendy’s James River campground on our way road tripping across country and she provided clear instructions and directions making navigating to the campsite at night a breeze. Swedish Lilac is not a posh campground resort. But it is a quaint, peaceful, woodsy retreat along the South River which is more like a creek at this location. If you are an outdoorsy lover of nature, then you will love this campground. Nothing fancy but they do have water/electric hook-up, a dump station, and a very nice bathhouse. The hosts, Valerie and Fritz are super welcoming and enjoy visiting with their guest. They also offered free firewood but don’t mind if you bring your own. This was the perfect weekend retreat we needed and we’ll be back!

Fritz and Valerie were excellent host and the site was beautiful! Loved falling asleep/waking up the sound of the south river. Space was nice and the amenities were well taken care of. Close proximity to Lexington, fun spot to hangout. They also provided plenty of wood for our stay for a very small cost. Highly recommend!

4 nights at Stoney Creek Campground

Site #10 was well suited for our 21’ trailer camper, (18’ box, 3’ tongue). It has a nice flat gravel pad and wood platform. The spot is next to Stoney Creek and an active pool. The sounds of gurgling water and croaking frogs were pleasant. In mid-May there are lots of butterflies and no mosquitoes. The night skies are quite dark. We were about 15 drive minutes from the BlueRidge parkway and Food Lion grocery store. 20-25 minutes drive will get you to excellent hikes. The Host WiFi is adequate.

I loved staying here! It’s a beautiful location right on the South River with a ton of bird life. Fritz and Valerie were incredibly kind and went above and beyond to make sure I had a good stay. I was at tent site 7 and enjoyed the fresh water spout, electric, access to the clean bathhouse, and free firewood dropped off at my site! I loved the sounds of the river and the occasional train chugging by. I worked remotely from their wifi for two days of my stay and was able to take video calls with no problem. I also felt extremely safe here as camping on my own as a woman. The campground is 20 minutes from Blue Ridge Parkway and 20 minutes from Lexington. Doesn’t get better! Check out St. Mary’s Falls for some swimming when you come!

Thunder BRidge is such a cool spot. The sites are beautiful and you have tons of privacy. The pavilion by the bath house was a cool place to spend a rainy day. My kids absolutely fell in love with ping pong. Waking up in the screened cabin and feeling the breeze and hearing birds chirping restores the soul!

Chris was very helpful and responsive. The campsite wasn't too far outside of Bedford and I felt safe there. The stay was affordable and a free washer and dryer which was a plus. There is a cute chicken and kitty that run around the campground and will welcome you.

We had an exceptional weekend at Buttermilk Bluff! Katie & Andy are wonderful hosts! The welcome bag is incredibly generous! We actually stayed at site 2, as we were the only ones there. The sites are very wide and well equipped and well maintained. We had such a great time strolling around with our dogs throughout the day, and watching the cows against the beautiful horizon while we relaxed! The pile of firewood, storage boxes, and super convenient dump station are huge bonuses!

Camped out of our van with our two hound dogs. We all enjoyed our time at Stoney creek. Campsite 10 allowed us to have neighbors on one side and a toad filled pond on the other, with direct access to the trails. The creekside trail leads you to a few different spots to fish. There is also a trail wrapping around the property worth wandering. Campground is well taken care of, we will be back.

1 night at James River Depot

The directions provided were very clear. Once I arrived, I noticed all of the camp sites are set in a cove of trees, so my spot offered a lot of privacy. Loved being close to the river, and plenty of outhouses available for bathroom use. Would definitely stay here again for the cost and simplicity of the it, and for the beautiful seclusion
