Campground is on private property, not a traditional campground, campsites are well spaced apart and each is different. One mile from Hwy 93, possible noise. This is a dry camp and rustic camping, sites are fairly far apart, ground is uneven. Two blocks from the Bitterroot river fishing access. This property is so beautiful and peaceful out here at night. Seasonal Spring fed pond, Ponderosa pine trees, fallen white birch, rustic and gorgeous. Some of my camp spots are on rough terrain. I always suggest you get out and walk around to see what you can manage with your vehicle. The idea of my place is more wilderness camping, there is wildlife that come through. RV camp spots on the east and west end of the pond. Camp spot out by the wooden round pen on the west side. Completely private, borders 2000 acres of a bird sanctuary. Two blocks from Bitterroot river canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swim, trails, hiking, scenery, and wildlife. My pond is spring fed, which means that is goes up and down with the seasons and run off from the snow in the mountains and collects cotton from the trees when they shed. As the summer goes by the pond levels go way down, please be aware of that.

We live on ten acres tucked in the pines at the foot of the Sapphire mountains with views west of the broad Bitterroot Valley and the stunning Bitterroot Mountains. Only a mile behind our house is a state wildlife management area and beyond that National Forest and then the Welcome Creek Wilderness. We have a greenhouse and garden on site but our major vegetable growing operation is down in the valley. Lots of wildlife travel through our lot, including a number of owls. In our first five years here we have seen five different owl species, which gives the cabin its name! We have two resident cats and a blue heeler, along with chickens who free roam and you will likely meet.

**Have friends or family that want to tag along? I have added an extra to allow for extra campers at the same site. See the extras section for details.**    Resting in the foothills of the sapphire mountains, just outside the town of Stevensville Montana, this beautiful 20 acre property is conveniently located halfway between Hamilton and Missoula; it is also a good midway point between Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. The outdoor activities are endless. Biking, hiking, fishing, swimming, hunting, trail riding, snow skiing and more are all within reach. Deer, turkey, osprey, killdeer, nighthawks, and eagles frequent the property as well as the occasional elk herd; and the Lee Metcalf wildlife refuge is about 15 minutes away.    The property sits about 400’ above the valley floor; giving spectacular panoramic views of the bitterroot valley and mountains, as well as incredible sunsets.    The paved road ends about 1 mile before the property, the remaining mile is a gravel road. There is also a one lane bridge right before you get to the property. Firewood is available for use at no charge.  Sewer hookup has not been run to the site yet but if you have a portable tank, or want to pull the camper over to the house, it can be dumped as needed beside the garage; just ask and I can show you where the pipe is.  There is a nema 14-50 hookup providing 50 amp power at the site; if needed I do have a 50 to 30 amp adapter you can borrow during your stay.  Water hookup is also available at the site, but may be limited in freezing weather.  If temperatures are to cold we can turn on the water to fill your tank as needed and then blow the line back out.  If you need to borrow a potable water hose let me know as i keep those in the garage unless needed.  There is a non-potable water hose that is available at the site, with a spray nozzle, incase you need to rinse or wash off gear, vehicles, etc.   SpaceX Starlink high speed internet is available via WiFi. You can also charge your electric vehicle, if needed, with the power at the campsite or I have another nema 14-50 plug available at the garage of the main house. Be sure to let me know if you will need the plug at the garage so I can make sure it is accessible.  If you have other questions feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer them. ****The first 10 photos were posted by me and are taken from the actual hipcamp spot. Primitive camping with no water or trash service, pack in / pack out. There is a portable toilet. Note, work has begun on the nearby highway bridge. Located in the Alberton Gorge on the Clark Fork River, this is a premier location for the whitewater enthusiast. Take advantage of the class II, III rapids in your kayak or raft, or even surf. Alternatively, enjoy the relaxing Sandy Beach just a few minutes walk from the campground to swim and gaze at the beautiful argilite cliffs. The campground is near both the Interstate and a railroad so there is some ambient noise. Note: we have cameras on the surf shack (container) that can see the entrance and the portable toilet area. We're happy to share the images with anyone concerned.

Travelers' Rest State Park camping guide

Overview

About

Follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark by setting off on a Travelers' Rest State Park camping expedition. Known as the only archaeologically confirmed Lewis and Clark Expedition campsite, this location is deeply steeped in history and culture. Not only did the legendary explorers leave their footprints here, but Native peoples, such as the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Nez Perce, held this area dear long before the expedition. The tales of these diverse cultures unravel in the programming offered at the park, providing campers a profound immersion into the history of the place.

Lolo Creek, a gently flowing stream bisecting the park, sets the scene for serene walks along the trails. It's a birding hotspot too, having registered a presence of over 115 species. So, pack your binoculars when setting up your camp and enjoy the concert of chirps and tweets.

Campers are invited to explore the Visitor's Center and Museum. It's like opening a time capsule, revealing replicas from the Lewis & Clark Expedition, artifacts of Salish culture, Native American hand crafts, and even a representation of a frontier Main Street. Camping near Travelers' Rest State Park is not just a compelling escapade; it's a voyage into the vibrant annals of Native American and frontier history.

When to go

The best time to visit Travelers' Rest State Park is during the warmer months, from May 1 to September 30, when the Visitor Center is open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Winter offers a quieter visit, but keep in mind the reduced hours and potential closures due to holidays.

Know before you go

  • Check for any special restrictions or closures before your visit, especially during seasonal changes.
  • Montana residents can enjoy free daily entrance with the state parks fee included in their vehicle registration.
  • Nonresidents should be prepared to pay a day use entrance fee of $8 with a vehicle.
  • The park is ADA accessible, ensuring an inclusive experience for all visitors.
  • Remember to practice 'Leave No Trace' principles to preserve the park's natural beauty.
