I wish we could have stayed a bit longer. The town was lovely; the room was sweet; the property was fascinating; and Jessica could not have been kinder. I’d love to stay there again if I get the chance. Highly recommend.

This was a perfect, off the grid cozy stay. It was pretty chilly while we there, but we were still able to see a variety of birds and wildlife!

My daughter and I stayed in the fall, the lake was closed to boating and fishing for bird migration and it was absolutely amazing to hear and see the thousands of birds!! That isn't even why we picked the location, but it was a wonderful bonus to the giant site and clean campground. Be warned, it was VERY windy being at the end of the peninsula, we have upgraded stakes so we didn't lose our 4 season tent or my winter equipped hammock, but we could have ... If we didn't have the proper gear. I would love to come back each season to experience taking our kayak out on the lake and to be able to fish. Highly recommend this camp and site!

This place is everything. My friend and I booked with Jessica last minute for a night after getting rained out of our original site, and our only problem is we wish we could have stayed longer. Cozy campsite, Jessica is an INCREDIBLE, generous host (with great soaps), and what an amazing, magical piece of land to be on. Also- world’s cleanest porta potty. Had to say it. If you’re thinking about it and you’re not sure - book it. 🤍

What a super cool place! Robert and Xene are incredible hosts, with the most epic camping world ever. The art exhibits are beyond wild, and fun to explore and get lost in. The camping was serene, including visits from deer and turkeys. The free firewood was such a nice touch, as was the ability to buy fresh eggs from their chickens. We had such a great overall experience and can’t wait to visit again!

We absolutely loved our time at Robert and Xene’s. The property was beautiful and peaceful. We chose the very last spot at the bottom of the property and it was perfect. One morning about 15 wild turkeys flew over us. They are caring and gracious hosts and we cannot wait to go back.

What a delight to spend the weekend at Bob and Xene’s. We experienced wild turkeys, nightly campfires, a walk to the river, and plenty of wonderful creations. Our site felt private, yet close to site amenities. You can hear some distant highway noise from the secluded hilltop… but I think that may be Iowa. We visited 4 state parks over the weekend and could often hear some road noise but still a great weekend in nature.

Fin and Feather is a rustic campground located right on the banks of the Mississippi River backwaters, known for its true “camping in nature” experience and stunning sunsets. Every site looks out over the water with a perfect sunset view! These primitive sites are large, shaded, and hammock-friendly. The ground is sandy, but the beach is not known as a swimming location. Fin and Feather sits where the main channel of the Mississippi River meets Spring Lake, part of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge. There’s plenty of wildlife to watch and endless nature to enjoy. The Great River Bike Trail runs parallel to the campground, with direct access from camp. We offer canoe and kayak rentals, and the lake is an excellent place to paddle (it closes to all boat traffic on October 1st as part of the wildlife refuge during duck hunting season). Firewood is available for purchase. A small camp store on-site carries essentials like ice, and the nearby towns of Thomson and Savanna offer additional supplies. There’s so much to do in the area—but with the peacefulness of the campground, you may just want to relax and enjoy the view!

These campsites are located along the lower half of our property and are tucked into fun little sites bordering our off road trail built for Jeeps, Broncos, and other similar off road vehicles. These are primitive style sites and cell phones likely will not work on any of our sites. This is truly a way to get away and just disconnect for a while! There is a VERY steep entrance into the camping area and a small water crossing is also necessary. Low clearance vehicles, cars, campers/trailers, and RV's will not be able to access the zone. If you'd like to camp at one of our sites and have a vehicle that won't qualify -- we do have friendlier parking but it will require quite a hike to get to your site or we can offer you a ride as well.

Spring Lake Campground was est. in 1943. This “vintage campground” has provided a place for families to relax in nature and make memories for generations. The lake is a backwater Mississippi River wildlife and fish refuge, so there is always something to see and learn about. The Great River Bike Trail runs right through, so bring your bike! It’s a beautiful ride from the campground to nearby Savanna, IL. We rent kayaks and canoes through September here as well. (The lake closes for all boat traffic Oct 1 to provide a refuge for migrating birds during duck hunting season,. If you enjoy birding, plan a trip during October) There is so much to do in the surrounding area: hiking and climbing at Palisades State Park, restaurants, bars and shopping in Savanna, museums and more. But enjoying a peaceful time at the campground, having a bonfire, watching the sunset on the lake and seeing the stars at night is really what it’s about. True old school camping, enjoying the wildlife sanctuary. Instead of pavement, we have trees. Our best amenity is nature! Get outside, unplug and relax. *We DO allow small campers on the peninsula like teardrops and Scamps but no generators please. *We ask that our campers please arrive before dark to find their site and set up to avoid disrupting other campers. It gets really dark! We do not have street lights so people can see the stars.

We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. The hillside is a nice walk for exercise or take the easier route and sit under the great oak tree in the other pasture. Campsites are off the road, behind our main home. You won't find a sign...we keep it simple. We allow pets at the sites for a $5 per pet/per night. If you would like to bring a pet, please add the Pet Fee which is listed on the Extra during the booking process. We have firewood available for sale, $5.55/bundle. This is located in the Extra section during the booking process. Lastly, there is free range chicken eggs available for purchase, $3.50/dozen. Rich history in this property. A section of land was purchased from the railroad in 1866. The farm was established in 1872. The rest of the property was purchased land from neighboring farms as the family grew. Our family has seen six generations born and raised on this land in the past 150 years. American Indian tribes use the land for their burial ground ceremonies. Elders from a Wisconsin tribe came to the farm through the 1960s to trek the land and perform a ceremony to honor their ancestors. Many arrow heads were found in the fields of the land. The American Indians told stories of how the little spring fed creek running through our land was a small river flowing towards the Apple River which flows into the Mississippi River. The Apple river is located one mile north of the farm. In 2001, the land hosted a small budget film crew for the scenes and setting of the 2002 film “Stray dogs” with Genevieve Turner. Camping under the stars surrounded by trees with the sounds of nature. Spotting variety of wildlife. Watching the most spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and the moon rising over the hills. There is a private lake three miles north of the sites - we offer passes for a fee for fishing and swimming at the beach or pool.

About

Known for its caves, Maquoketa Caves State Park has been attracting picnickers and hikers since the Victorian Era. The 13 caves range in size from compact grottos best visited by experienced spelunkers to the massive, 1,100-square-foot Dancehall Cave. Other prominent features include a six-mile-long trail system that links the caves to other attractions, a natural bridge formation, a couple of picnic areas, and a seasonal interpretive center where visitors can check out educational exhibits. The small, seasonal campground offers showers, potable water, a playground, and a dump station.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Campsite reservations can be made up to three months in advance through the Iowa State Parks website or by calling the reservation call center.
Same-day sites may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early to increase your chances of securing a spot.
Be aware that while the park is open year-round, the campground is closed from December through February.
As the campground only has 29 available sites, reservations fill up fast. If you can't snag a spot but still want to explore, consider booking a spot at one of many private Hipcamps in the area.

When to go

The best time to visit Maquoketa Caves is in summer, when the interpretive center and caves are open, although this is also the busiest time. This is also when rangers operate special educational programs, including a white-nose syndrome awareness program that's required of all visitors entering the caves. The caves close during winter for bat hibernation, but other parts of the park stay open.

Know before you go

The closest place to pick up groceries and supplies is the town of Maquoketa, about a 10-minute drive from the park. You'll find larger stores and more extensive facilities in Dubuque, about a 35-minute drive away.
To reduce the spread of emerald ash borer, a parasitic beetle, campers are not allowed to transport firewood across county or state lines and are instead advised to purchase firewood locally.
Sites 25-30 (the only ones without electric hookups) are walk-in sites requiring a hike anywhere between 25 to 90 yards.
Site 16 is the campground’s only wheelchair-accessible site.

Maquoketa Caves Campground

Was only there one night, but wish i could've stayed longer. Very nice campsite. Decent space between sites, so feels decently private without being remote. Showers were clean and warm. The trail to the caves is beautiful and really cool to explore. It was my first time out and camping in my car. All in all, I had a great time.

Maquoketa Caves Campground

The caves alone are worth a visit, and camping was fantastic. I went with a group of five of my best friends. Although it rained, the hiking was spectacular—we found a few really great hidden water spots. This was also the first time I ever had a pizza sandwich cooked over the fire. It changed my life. Haha! <3
