Your pets are welcome, but keep in mind that this property is patrolled by two large Great Pyrenees dogs, and while they are friendly to people, they are territorial and have been aggressive towards other dogs until they become friends. For the safety of all the dogs, your pets must be contained/on a leash at least until all of the dogs can get to know each other. We are 5 miles from I-65, and 19 miles north of Louisville, KY. WARNING: The driveway leading to the campsite is a long, steep, gravel driveway with a concrete bridge at the bottom. The bridge also has fairly steep embankments on both sides (entering and exiting) with a turn heading into the site. A 4WD vehicle will be necessary for anyone pulling an RV as we have had at least one guest get stuck halfway up the hill when exiting with a two-wheeled truck with a V8 engine pulling a small RV. In addition, you will likely need a brake-control system installed for coming down the hill. Front-wheel drive vehicles with high clearance should be satisfactory to cross the bridge and exit the steep hill as long as you are not pulling an RV. This is our second time here and my goodness, it’s perfect. My daughter loves hiking on the property and petting the horses. It has everything you NEED and the warm shelter after a rainy hike at McCormicks Creek State Park is always what we need. Can’t wait to come back again. The creativity that goes into how the land is cultivated is clear. The suspended string platform was so zen being surrounded by a perfect autumn mosaic. We stayed in one of the tiny glamping cabins and absolutely loved it. It is a simple little wooden box with a full-size bed you crawl into, and it ended up being the perfect cozy nest for the night. There was enough room to sit up, stash our gear, and our dog fit comfortably with us. It was a cold night, but our sleeping bags plus the structure kept us warm, and the sound of rain on the tin roof was unreal. Check-in was easy and the cabin was simple to find. It was clean in that ideal glamping way: not spotless, just naturally rustic and comfortable. The location is incredibly quiet and peaceful. We heard the occasional bit of road noise from a distant back country road, but nothing distracting. The sites are spaced far apart, so everything feels private. The host was wonderful. They gave us plenty of space but were also happy to chat with my husband about permaculture and building ponds. My favorite part of the stay was climbing into the web at night to look at the stars. It felt magical. The outhouse was also surprisingly nice, which was a great little bonus. Would absolutely come back. This place just has something special! ✨

The large pavilion with electric comes in handy for blowing up mattresses and the porta-pot style toilet was the cleanest I've ever seen! Love this area. We have now camped here 4 times and have not had a single complaint. The hosts are very welcoming and even take our kids for rides on their golf cart. This trip was our second annual camping trip with high school friends and bringing all of our kids together to play is awesome. Three of the campsites border a nice 2 acre or greater size yard and the kids play until they are so tired or it’s time for s’mores. We are already talking about another trip this summer.

At night the stars really stand out, great place to sit out by the campfire. You might get so lucky to have a visit from Jersey (the neighborhood dog) who was very friendly and not at all aggressive.

We had an amazing experience staying at the cozy camping cottage at Happy Hollow Homestead! My favorite part was the tree web - there's something magical and therapeutic about being midair and surrounded by trees. We also enjoyed everything else at the homestead, from the friendly animals, the outdoor shower, to the natural surroundings. Kerry has been a fantastic host and responsive throughout booking and our stay. 10/10 would recommend!

I loved camping here. The teepees are such a great retreat, I chose one with power which was a luxury. Enjoyed cooking over a fire with my own picnic table nearby. Even set up my hammock behind the teepee with some well placed trees. The bathrooms were very well maintained and even had an outdoor sink to wash hands and a separate large sink to clean dishes. The grounds are lovely and I will definitely be back to camp again.

Dreaming of the lake life? Hit the beach and waters of Deam Lake State Recreation Area in southern Indiana. The 194-acre lake serves as a backdrop—or focal point—for a range of outdoor activities. Paddle around quiet coves or hit the open waters in a larger boat (electric motors are allowed). Relax in the sands on the swim beach. Not far from the waters, the campground has over 100 campsites for RVs and tents and 19 Rent-a-Camp cabins. This place is a horse-lover’s dream (appropriate for its location just outside of Louisville, Kentucky), offering equestrian campsites with facilities for your horses to camp, too.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Campsites may be reserved up to six months in advance through Reserve America or the Indiana State Park website or by phoning 1-866-622-6746.
  2. All sites have electric hookups. Water is not available at individual campsites, but spigots are located in the campground.
  3. The campground is open year round, with limited services from November through April. Water spigots may be shut off and modern restrooms closed during these months. Water service resumes in the spring based on weather forecasts.
  4. Advanced reservations are recommended for weekends and holidays.

When to go

Though Deam Lake State Recreation Area is located in Indiana, the park is fewer than 20 miles from Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby brings a lot of excitement to the region the first Saturday each May, which might make it a great time to come to Deam Lake or a bad time, depending on your preferences. Summer is the primary peak season, thanks to plentiful lake activities. Expect hot and humid weather. Temperatures are cooler in spring and fall, with winter bringing freezing weather and the chance for snow.

  • Rowboats and kayaks may be rented onsite between Memorial Day and Labor Day on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
  • The swim beach is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • Camping cabins rentals are also available in the park.

The campground as a whole is very nice and well maintained. The lake is absolutely gorgeous and the many trails around the lake provide you with many beautiful views. Will definitely be going back again!
