Tips for Snagging a Campsite Reservation
- Sites at Viento can be booked up to six months in advance on the Oregon State Parks website, but same-day next-day reservations need to be booked in person.
- Viento campground is one of the easier spots to find a campsite, though if you are looking for same-day slots, it's always best to arrive in the morning when other campers are leaving. This is particularly important if you are arriving on a Friday or Saturday, when the campground is most likely to fill up.
- If you want a specific site, you can create an online alert to be notified if there’s a cancellation.
When to Go
Viento State Park is open from late March or early April through October. It’s located in a particularly windy part of Oregon, which can add to the chill factor, but if you come in July through September it’s usually pleasantly warm and dry, at least by Pacific Northwest standards. This is also peak windsurfing season, and the campground and area around it can get busy, particularly on weekends. If you love wildflowers and are willing to chance potential rain, come in April or May, when the area erupts with colorful blooms.
Know Before You Go
- Viento State Park is situated right off the busy I-84 and next to railway tracks, and get its fair share of traffic and train noise, particularly in campsites A1-A31, on the northern edge of the campground.
- The best place to pick up groceries and supplies is the city of Hood River, a 10-minute drive from the park.
- The campground is divided into two sections. The main area to the north of I-84 has 61 sites plus bathrooms and showers, while the smaller area to the south of the freeway has 13 primitive sites and restrooms.
