John Muir National Historic Site

You might know John Muir as a rugged naturalist. When he wasn't in the wild, he lived in luxury in a 17-room mansion. Today, the house is a National Historic Site—and you can wander through it.

The experience begins in the visitor center, which chronicle's Muir's incredible life in the wilderness. Watch a film about his conservation efforts, and check out interpretive exhibits. Then, explore the majestic Victorian house. Look out for the three imported Italian marble fireplaces and the rainwater plumbing system. Be sure to join a Ranger-led tour for an in-depth experience.

For true Muir devotees, Mount Wanda is a must. Muir once hiked this 326-acre area with his daughters. Bring a picnic to enjoy in the historic orchards at the top.

Within a short drive of the Muir house, you'll find a variety of campgrounds. Whether you're in an RV or tent, it's a breeze to find a fantastic spot. San Francisco is close by, and you'll find killer hiking at the Carquinez Strait Shoreline.
