The best camping near Camas with campfires

·

Within commuting distance of Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, Camas is a good base if you want to visit area attractions without staying in a big city. Many people stop here for snacks and supplies on their way out to the hiking trails of the Columbia River Gorge or on their way to the nearby Yacolt Burn State Forest. That said, there's plenty to do in and around Camas, particularly in the warm summer months. Area highlights include the Washougal River, which is dotted with freshwater swimming holes fed by glacial melt, and Lacamas Lake, an excellent spot for fishing and birdwatching.

First thing everyone should know is that we are under the landing approach to PDX. Some planes are quiet, and some are not. My wife, our farm pals, and I are used to it but, we want you to be aware. So, our property: coming in at roughly under 30 acres, Cold Springs Farm, established in 1885 and sits nestled in its own little valley. The farm's name is inspired by spring feeds a small pond at the Northeast Corner (near the Alder Site) that has crawdads, Mallards and Blue Heron. Of course, there are also curious Raccoons and Possums about. A canyon running the north of the property in known for its wildlife population including bear, deer and elk. Wherever you camp, you may hear someone moving through the forest at night. Although we are a short 30-minutes to Portland, our private farm is free from unwanted lights and traffic (save the intermittent air traffic), when the skies are clear, starwatchers who bring their telescopes have many vantage points from which they can indulge their hobby! Our wide-open field is great for kite flying, frisbee, doggie frolics, and it's also a great place to practice your drone piloting skills. Mid-July through early October you have access to pick as many blackberries as you want and they are delicious. Cold Springs Farm is also a sanctuary. Our current residents include our Kunekune Pigs: Chris P Bacon, Wilbur, Piggit, Hamish McBiscuit and Rowdy. The resident goats include Dolly, Freddy McNubbins, Princess Daisy, Mikey, Mildred, Marvin, Daphne, Booger, Cyra-Nose, and Delilah our big, gentle goat. Rounding out the bunch are our farm dogs, Oscar Braveheart, Hoppin' Howie and Lulu-bear our rescue Pyrenees and resident sweetheart. We look forward to welcoming to our Columbia River Gorge farm and introducing you to what our beautiful area has to offer. We are just minutes from many of the gorge waterfall hikes including the historic Multnomah falls and Vista House sitting on Crown Point. One of Oregon's favorite summer concert venues, McMenamins Edgefield, is a short 10 miles. And we have economy spots specifically for Mcmenamin Concert goers. Contact us for details. This property was once part of a 200 acre cattle ranch turned into a Christian community. The families shared meals, home-schooled their children and had a home-based church. They raised their own food in a 3 acre garden and orchard along with chickens and cows for milk, meet and eggs. Two of the original families still own some of the acres although the community was dissolved and much of the property sold to other people. Learn more about this land: We love sharing our beautiful land with those that love nature. The sunsets, the peace and the birdsong are the best.  Pets are welcome and you can walk through the forest with them on dirt pathways or keep them in your campsite. Please keep pets out of our area, as our dog is very protective and has been known to have scuffles with other animals approaching. Grassy areas are available to set up tents or have picnics. There are firepits for when the burn ban is not on (a wheelbarrow full of wood for $5). The campsites are large and spaced quite far from each other.  Please stay on gravel roadways with all motor vehicles.  There are two outhouses for tents campers. There is one non-potable water spigot by the log outhouse. There is no electricity on the property.  For your own safety and peace of mind, please keep all food in bear safe containers or locked in your cars. If you forget anything, the Washougal River Mercantile is two miles away where you can buy gas and groceries.  Local hiking trails on the Columbia Gorge:  Cape Horn Trail just 3 miles from our property and Beacon Rock/Hamilton Mountain trail is a 15 minute drive.   We can give you directions to our favorite swimming hole for cooling down on hot summer days in the Washougal river. (Discovery Pass required at the river) parking spot. Buy those at the Mercantile as well)

Once covered in old growth fir, this family farmland has raised potatoes, raspberries, nursery stock and housed 4 generations who absolutely love living the country life. Because neighboring farmers kept the land in near original condition, my wife and I enjoy the same panoramic splendor today that Pops had in the 1960's when he built this house. Folks who visit our campsite cannot believe they are less than an hour from 2.5 million people. Get out and get away for a little campfire therapy under the stars. Refresh your mind, body and spirit with clean air, a secluded setting and the peaceful view of prime Oregon farmland stretching toward the rugged foothills of the Cascade Range. Learn more about this land: Surrounded by trees with seasonal creek this quiet private campsite offers a spectacular unobstructed Mt. Hood view.  Relax in your RV and watch the sunrise over Mount Hood or enjoy a crisp clear morning walk along the creek side trail. Sleep under the stars with the sounds of crickets and the distant coyote.  Wake to the site of quail, heron or hawk and the occasional deer. Learn more about this land: It sits upon a meadow with surrounding trees and a cow pasture in the distance. Spring time offers a small pond (please see below), but the Lewis river is close by with tons of recreational activities (swimming, fishing, hiking, wineries, etc.). There is only one site so there is a lot of privacy (there used to be two so some of the pictures show the older site right by the pond). It is a rural property with both farms AND residential homes/Airbnbs along the river and surrounding area. Town is not far (six miles) to get supplies and the Heisson convenience store is less than a mile away. Privacy is better here than at a public campground and it's perfect for a quick trip out of town for a day or two or just a quick and safe stop in your travels, or an extended stay. This is a beautiful property and I enjoy sharing it, please be mindful of the rules. *This winter was tough, lots of wind, so some trees fell, but they are all cleaned up and lots of small trees were planted. Can't wait until they grow to help for more privacy!!! Please, read the site description carefully! There is NO electricity or plumbing at the sites but there is a BPA safe hose for water at the top of the hill for your use (I usually have it on but if not please feel free to message me, and if you don't want to wait for a reply please feel free to knock on my door). The camp toilet (composting bucket with seat and lid) has a private tent, please be aware you must pack out your waste. This site can accommodate a large group, please see the prices when reserving. (It can fit up to five RVs but keep in mind it's dry camping and the RVs must have their own toilets.) I LOVE Dogs and they are most welcome, and may be off leash for a run in the field, however, they MUST have high recall. Please be mindful of my own dogs and chickens down below so please do not let them go beyond your site or the field when using. *We plan on making the pond to be a swim pond that will hold water all year long (the creek that runs into it is seasonal so it dries out depending on how much rain we get in any given year).

This is a rare find away from everybody yet close to everything!  Minutes to Mount Hood Recreation Area, Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah Falls, Barton Park, Dodge Park, Clackamas River Basin, Golf Courses, Bike and HikingTrails, Outlet Stores and Joe's Donuts.

Camas camping guide

Where to go

The Columbia Gorge

Just outside of Camas, on both the Washington and Oregon sides of the Columbia River, the Columbia River Gorge is celebrated for its many viewpoints and great hikes. Popular hiking areas on the Washington side include Hamilton Mountain and Dog Mountain, both of which offer expansive views for those willing to trek up to the top.

Mount St. Helens

Less than a two-hour drive from Camas, Mount St. Helens is best known for its 1980 eruption, which blew its pointed tip straight off. Visitors can learn about the eruption and about volcanoes in general at the mountain's visitor center or explore the Ape Cave, the longest continuous lava tube in the continental United States.

Mount Hood

On the Oregon side of the Columbia, Mount Hood is among the most popular ski destinations in the Pacific Northwest, with slopes for all skill levels along with snow-tubing hills and a summertime alpine slide. It’s also a great place for summertime hiking. Cinema fans won’t want to forego a visit to the mountain’s Timberline Lodge, where The Shining was filmed.

When to go

Camas is at its warmest and driest in the summer months, particularly if you want to go swimming in the nearby Washougal River. July and August are almost always hot and dry, but it’s always wise to be prepared for rain or overcast days. If you plan to camp in the area, but don’t want to deal with crowds, September’s a great time to do it, as most schools in the area start up right after Labor Day.
