***Akitaaru Homestead was named one of 2023's BEST PLACES TO PITCH A TENT. Thanks to all of our campers and to Mother Earth for sharing this beautiful place with us humans! *** We run a small active homestead with livestock, gardens, dogs, and free range children. We are happy to share our five acres of beautiful PNW forest with intrepid campers Learn more about this land: Have you ever wanted to have an entire campground to yourself?  Planning a romantic getaway, private group trip, or getting your feet wet with your first trip of the year (or ever!?) We have got the perfect place for you! Camp on the edge of Forest Park and sleep underneath an evergreen canopy of Douglas fir and big leaf maple. We have one large forest glade with room for several tents. We book only one group at a time, so you are guaranteed the place to yourselves. We can accommodate up to 12 people, with a max of 4 vehicles (parking is tight). The campground features:  -Fairy lights strung among the tress to create the perfect magical ambiance -Large fire ring with cooking grate and seating for two -Newly built "glampy"  composting latrine (commune with nature!) - A huge clearing with multiple flat tent spots -1/2 mile of trails with hidden surprises - A parking area suitable for car camping or van camping during the rainy season. -Only 20 minutes from downtown Portland, 15 from I5, and minutes from gas and groceries *COMING SOON* Giant disk swing and swinging loveseat Parking is separate from the campground! It is a brief but steep 1/4 mile hike to get to the main campground and latrine. Bring hiking shoes and pack light. It takes most people 5-15 minutes to hike up, depending on fitness level and load size . If you want to car camp, you will be next to a road and separate from the latrine and fire pit. Enjoy several short trails on the camp's property before heading to Forest Park's Wildwood Trail, which is just up the street, or check out all of the incredible natural and urban nearby attractions in Portland. We are about 20 minutes away Portland's International Rose Test Garden , The Oregon Zoo, and Pittock Mansion Or just swing lazily in a hammock under the trees and enjoy the sound of the forest coming to life. Inquire about a tour of the homestead and the chance to play with our tiny herd of goats who think they are dogs. The main campground will be all yours. It includes the fire pit, latrine, and room for 3-5 tents. You will be surrounded by forest on all sides. It is private and dreamy. The homestead will be down 800 ft below you, but far enough that we shouldn't hear each other or see each other, especially in the summer when the foliage has grown in. You likely will hear our chickens in the morning.

Akitaaru Forest Camp
Tenting on Moriah's property was an absolute delight! The spacious camping area provided ample room for a comfortable setup, and the attention to detail was impressive – from well-maintained trails to thoughtful additions like a bear box for food storage. Exploring the surrounding trails uncovered delightful hidden surprises, adding an extra layer of adventure to the experience. The warmup hike to the tent spot was invigorating, setting the tone for a memorable outdoor retreat. Moriah's property truly captures the essence of a perfect camping getaway. PS: we loved visiting the Nigerian dwarf goats prior to departure.

What a lovely place!! Totally worth the hike up the hill! They really thought of everything! The hanging lights were awesome to have and the composting toilet has the best view! Got to meet the farm guardian, the lovely Odessa (their Great Dane)!

Beautiful beautiful spot to camp near Portland. Only took about 15-20 minutes to get to PSU area/Powell’s/lots of fun restaurants and close to many great hikes as well ! The campsite itself is such a joy to be at, adorned with the sweetest decorations, a nice fire pit, and lovely composting toilet

Well-lit hilltop camping for dogs
There seems to be some confusion in the reviews as to the dfficulty of the hike and I'd like to settle it. I am 40 yrs, 5'5", 165lbs, moderately active and was wearing a 53lb pack. My fitness watch measured 0.14 miles, 365 steps in 4min 13s with an elevation gain of 118 feet with a max heart rate of 168bpm. The steepest part is the beginning and then it flattens out. It's worth noting that there are two paths up to the site. The one on the right, which the sign directs you to, is the one I'm speaking of; the one to the left is slightly longer, but not quite as steep. The trail is well laid with gravel outlined by logs. The campsite has plenty of flat areas to camp. The swiveling, adjustable fire grate for the fire pit is very helpful for cooking; it held the weight of my 10inch cast iron pan no problem. The fire pit has thick a metal ring around it that absorbs heat and radiates. There is a bench by the fire that can seat four people, and a love-swing that they might be hanging soon by the trees. There is a standard camping table, comfy hammock for one and string lighting on a timer when the sun isn't up (can turn it off though). The litrine is well thought out. Motion activated lighting, wood chips with a scoop, trash can, toilet paper, and reading materials. Clean. Moriah is lovely person, good listener and great host. She cultivates delicious salsa/garlic/chicken eggs, and amazingly good wine for a reasonable price! My dogs loved it too! Shovel on site. Cute goats!

Akitaaru Forest Camp
The site was absolutely beautiful and easy to find. The signage and directions were clear. I will absolutely be returning! I will say, the hike up is quite steep and a bit longer than expected.
